It's not the top choice in luxury but it is definitely a historic place that could use some updating. The management and staff were truly awesome to say the least. The hotel is interesting at least if you at all care about the history of the area. Located within walking distance to resurrection bay.... Beautiful scenery truly breathtaking area!!!!

Many of the other reviews reflect our experience at this hotel, which was built in 1915. The room was tiny, and overall, the place is in desperate need of a refreshing. It has some cool history, and the pictures on the walls are interesting. Danny, the GM, is a great guy, helpful and friendly - I hope he is well... More

Dan, the manager, is really the only good thing I have to say about this place. But for $200 dollars a night it really is dirty, terrible, and uncomfortable. It is one of the worst places I have ever stayed in. Since payment was made ahead of time there was nothing we could do. Gross sheets, beds, bathrooms...etc...

comfortable enough bed and a clean bathroom. But it seemed liked it couldn't decide to be a hotel or a hostel. There's a full kitchen for guest use, which our room was right next to. Didn't go on vacation to listen to, or smell the odors of, people cooking dinner. Parking is on street, which was more convenient than I... More

We stayed here for two awful nights. If I hadn't paid in advance, and other places were booked up I would have changed my place to stay. This was the worst place I have ever stayed in. The entry way was not at all inviting. The rug had a big hole in it. The place smelled awful when you walked... More

First off the ONLY redeeming qualities: Dan at the front desk. He is wonderful and should get a job at a real hotel with potential. And, this hotel is downtown, about a mile from the docks. Great access to local bars and restaurants. My beef is the low quality for the exhorbitant price. Extremely overpriced. Think almost $200 for Motel... More

We (three) stayed at the Van Gilder August 1st and 2nd. On checking in, we found the small room on the 3rd Flr discouraging, but decided to stay. The hotel has a fully equipped and roomy kitchen, a common room with a TV and 3 small tables for breakfast, and a larger table in the lobby. The trick is to... More

I love historic hotels and love to stay downtown. This hotel is interesting and has a great location. However, it is not worth the prices they charge in the summer. The rooms are very basic (tiny TV in a corner you can't see from the bed and no hangers I'm the box that passes for a closet). I don't care... More

A heartfelt thank you to Daniel, Daniella, Clint and Ciara for being the most accommodating and informative staff of any hotel we have every lodged with. We wanted to roll back time and experience the old charm of Alaska in a quaint fishing town and so we did. The Van Gilder is a gem in the rough. It needs some... More

The Van Gilder is a cool little hotel. You need to know what you are getting into. Our family took rooms 301-303 (double room) on the top floor with a great corner view of the Mountains and Ocean. Older travelers, keep in mind their is no elevator. We had our own bathroom (not all rooms do). Being a 100 year... More
