Just over an hour's drive from San Jose International Costa Rica airport (SJO), eco-minded travelers from all over the world have reveled in the beauty of Villa Blanca Cloud Forest Hotel, located within the Los Angeles Private Biological Nature Reserve & Research Station in the Canton of San Ramon. The hotel is ideally situated as a gateway to Arenal Volcano and the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Here, you're immersed in one of the world's most precious and complex jungle ecosystems - the cloud forest. This boutique mountain hotel is nestled on 75-acres of gentle rolling hills, with well-appointed "casitas" and Honeymoon Suites, each with their own fireplace, and surrounded by acres of lush botanical gardens. Originally owned by former president Rodrigo Carazo Odio and First Lady, Estrella Zeledon de Carazo, Villa Blanca has become a renown and cherished Costa Rica destination. The architecture reflects the original farm village concept, with a welcoming Hacienda, offering guests exceptional Costa Rican hospitality, premier dining, a private theater, conference facilities, and pampering spa menu. Also quite unique is a replica of a 14th century Roman wedding chapel, La Mariana, with its hand painted ceramic ceiling. Choose from a variety of nature-based activities, including horseback, zip-lines, and user-friendly guided trials, plus excursions to Arenal and Poas volcanoes, hot springs, and rural-cultural tours. This is the Costa Rica where those who "travel well and travel right" want to go. Please feel free to visit our sister-site, one of the most prestigious Manuel Antonio hotels, Si Como No.

In the countryside, reached by a miles-long road, as narrow as it was bumpy, a fascinating tour itself of modest houses and Costa Rica's official animal, the Dog. Mist all around. Cabin was attractive and cozy, especially amid the wind & rain of a storm. Housekeeper a keeper. Gorgeous view down the valley. Dozens of hummingbirds. Pleasant waiters--knew about wines, too. Night-walking tour-for-two with guide was magical.

The hotel is in a beautiful location with rooms in separate bungalows in the grounds. Each room feels very private. Although the menu was the same each day there was a good selection to choose from and the food was very good. The restaurant staff were very friendly. We had an early start two days and they provided a breakfast box ( a piece of fruit and a sandwich). We did the night walk, which was excellent and the nature walk, which was also good. We also went on the quetzal excursion, with an excellent guide. The rooms had heaters and dehumidifiers which helped keep things less damp and plenty of hot water!

What a lovely oasis of calm in the cloud forest! Fantastic unspoilt forest teeming with wild life including coatis, humming birds, owls, frogs to name a few. Beautiful manicured gardens, wedding chapel, and working dairy where you could try your hand at milking. If you want to get back to nature with few distractions, this is the place for you. Would go back for a few days if the opportunity arose,

Beautiful grounds, great food, comfy accommodations, friendly people. The hummingbird area was fascinating, and we saw some nifty little critters on the informative night walk. We also appreciated the luggage service. I'd certainly go again and stay longer. It's very peaceful up here.

The recent reviews reflect my feelings on this hotel. I wanted to love it as it was the last place we stayed. I was looking forward to wandering aimlessly on rainforest trails and having a relaxing end to our trip. It is definitely IN the cloud forest. We saw about an hour of sun in the 2.5 days we were there. If you love botany and are good at recognizing birds by sound, this is a wonderful place. The trails that are not chained off or signed as "do not enter" are limited in length. Lovely, but it can all be done in a short day even if you go slowly. Be sure to visit the chapel (beautiful ceramic tiles), the dairy (feeding the calf was a special event), the hummingbird garden, and the movie theater. Unfortunately, with the humidity at/above 100%, everything is damp. We were provided with a portable heater and dehumidifier, which helped. The rustic in room fireplace would have been charming if the wood was dry. Instead, even my best attempts resulted only in fleeting flames and then the persistent odor of wood smoke on everything for the duration of our stay. Being limited to one restaurant, with one menu, might be OK for some, but we were disappointed in the lack of traditional Costa Rican food. At least at breakfast (which we enjoyed), there was the familiar gallo pinto, plantain, queso Fresca, and tortilla. The restaurant staff and chef were amazing (lots of chats, laughs, recipe sharing), as were the happy hour cocktails. However, this place wasn't for us.

Villa Blanca There’s so much to like about this hotel, the peace and quiet. Other than it’s rustic charm, we liked the excellent wifi, the beautiful gardens, the spacious accommodation, the comfy beds, quality large towels, big bathrooms with plenty of hot water, smooth bedding, the well laid out trails (the hummingbird trail was delightful, a cinema (yes really), activities such as games and pool table, and the airy spotless lobby space with its indoor garden. Of course, one is in a cloud forest so if you are lucky to get there on a day when the cloud lifts enjoy the views. The jewel in the crown, though, is the staff. Always a smile, a welcome and a genuine desire to please. Particular mention must go to the dining staff and the chef who took time to chat and nothing was too much trouble. Fab poached eggs! However, there’s an annoying range of negative aspects that cannot go unmentioned. The hotel is under new ownership and they are quite aware of the issues, but renovations take time and it would be remiss to avoid the cons involved. The rooms appear stuck in time warp. One could easily imagine Agatha Christie staying there. Everywhere is very dimly lit, the decor is dated and the promise of a real fire in your room is quickly dampened by billows of smoke. These are not solved overnight, however there are some quick fixes I suppose. After a long trip (it took us just over 2 hours and the final 8km is on a really pot noted road), a refreshing drink or damp towel would have been welcome, as would a range of beverages with some biscuits would have been a big improvement on the two single (but complimentary) coffee pods we were told we’d find in our room. Small touches such as candles on the dining tables would have broken the rather dark environment and a drink price list really is a must. Re food - the chef is newly appointed and I’m sure he’s planning to upgrade the dining experience but at the time of writing the menu is quite limited and it’s the same lunch and dinner. Breakfast is also limited and far below what I would expect from such a pricey establishment which boasts its own dairy and eggs from its own hens. It was just a bit meh. Unlike its sister hotel The Parador where the breakfast buffet is much bigger and has more variety. A bit of wildlife, but less than we’d hoped although we had a visit from some Coaties that was delightful. Give it a year or two and this establishment might well live up to its expensive price tag.

Had a lovely stay here, it’s hard to get to but well worth the trek. You’re surrounded by mountains, jungle/forest, and they have happy resident cows from which provide milk for their dairy dishes. The people are lovely too.

Hotel is about 10 km from everything else, rode in and out is terrible. Actually a small farm on property several nature trails a restaurant and a movie theater movie theater. You pick a DVD and I’ll play it in the theater for you. Very fun. Rooms are more of a cabin no television, but very good Wi-Fi. Choose this hotel if you’re looking for a retreat, not a homebase.

This was our first stay in CR in November. The road in (as other people have said) is brutal especially after a twelve hour flight followed by a two hour car journey! The hotel itself is lovely, comfortable, friendly and great views. we only stayed two nights but we had a lovely time but we didn't do that much so can't review the facilities that much, although we did have a guided night walk and disappointingly the guide seemed more interested in his own pictures than showing us the wildlife. I can say the staff in the restaurant - name check Marco:) are great! Friendly, helping us practice our spanish and efficient service. The food was always good we never had a bad meal, Views from this location are lovely.
