Excellent, spacious room on the second floor with its own balcony. There is street noise to be sure, but host Chuck is a fountain of knowledge about the area, recommendations for things to do and places to eat, the bed is extremely comfortable, the breakfast delicious and homemade, and you get the chance to sleep in a piece of history.

The website picture does not truly represent the facility. Trees and associated shrubbery overgrown. House understandably was very old and showed the need for a good cleaning. It has lots of potential. No maid services. Soap inadequate - had to purchase some locally. No A/C and very noisy with local sirens frequently. Breakfasts were only adequate and nothing special. If you don't mind a room temperature of 90 degrees and a location at a busy noisy intersection, then this is the place for you. As stated in a prior review, parking is on a main thoroughfare which given New Bedford's reputation, is one for concern. The old county jail, now the holding facility for inmates waiting trial ,is two...

Feel like you are staying back in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The staff is friendly and accomadating. The food served for breakfast is different each day, but from what I recall is all fresh, local, and homemade, & it's divine. The inside is full of antiques, has a nice sunroom. The bedrooms really take you back in time,...

We needed an overnight prior to catching the ferry to Martha's Vineyard. Our room was lovely and the adjacent bathroom entirely satisfactory. I grew up in an old house and this building was instantly familiar. Our host was gracious and charming, as well as wildly interesting. Our dinner recommendation was perfect. Our breakfast the next day was splendid. Should we...

I came to New Bedford just to see the Whaling Museum and was surprised to find that my trip was greatly enriched by my decision to stay at the Octagon House. The house: An elegantly appointed time machine to a different world. The sunroom has an indoor cactus, succulent and palm garden and is very inviting. The dining room has...

When I signed up in December to run in the New Bedford half marathon, I had difficulty finding a place to stay in town that would take our beautiful, well behaved golden retriever, Bonnie. Captain Haskell's B&B was a lifesaver, welcoming us and our large dog. My husband and I and Bonnie were very comfortable there for race weekend March...

It breaks my heart to read some of these negative reviews, because this house is nothing but treasure! The quaint home is filled with spirit and stories. I am so thankful that the owner shares his special house with others. In the morning, we were greeted to a new day with a lovely breakfast in the dining room. Had the...

We are veteran vacationers in B&B's and we were looking forward to our stay at Captain Haskell's Octagon House. My review of this Inn is written with torn emotion as the owner Chuck, is very nice, accommodating, and knowledgeable about the area, and the resident cats very affectionate. Each morning the table was set and ready for us with fruit,...

“I stayed on the top floor in a little room that was just a perfect amount of space for me as a single woman traveling alone (I had a lot of luggage). There was a shared bathroom that was immaculate, good shower with lots of hot water. The sound is a little live when people are coming up the stairs, otherwise there is no street noise or disturbance at night.”
