Bonete (from the English word bonnet) is simultaneous close to civilization and far from it. It is reachable only following an eight-mile hike (not particularly easy) or using small boats that have to land on the beach braving the surf. Everything you see there arrived by boat, from construction material to staple food (other than fish).

We hike the trail to Bonete and returned by boat. That said, we stayed two nights at Porto Bonete and had a wonderful time. The hotel is located on the northwest end, where the trail ends, just a few steps from the beach. The facilities are plain but charming. There are about 10 rooms, a small swimming pool, and a common area.

The rooms are of good size and tastefully decorated, nothing fancy. We particularly enjoyed the quality of the bed, mattress, pillows, sheets, and comforter, all first rate. It seems that so many inns skimp on these items, which in our eyes are so important. Porto Bonete does not, and it should be commended...

This Pousada (Bed & Breakfast) can only be reached by hiking a 7.5 mile trail or chartering a small boat. But it is so, so worth it! We hiked there and the trail is not easy - especially in near 100 degree heat. But the difficulty of the trail only made the reward of the pousada even better. Coming up from the beach, you are greeted by a small hand painted sign pointing you along a flower laden path to the pousada. There is an open air bar/check-in area where a well-deserved ice cold drink can be purchased. You can sip your drink under cover at the bar or around the beautiful pool that is lighted at night by different colored lights. The property is small and private as it is surrounded on three sides by the jungle and the fourth side by the cove where Blackbeard used to hide in between raids on the Brazilian coast. Many of the inhabitants of the small town are decendants of the infamous pirate. The rooms are small but very nice. It was thrilling sleeping in the jungle... More
