Possibly the very best place we stopped at during 5 weeks in NZ. Drove from Taupo and the road just kept climbing as the views of the mountains unfolded. The Chateau is at 3700 feet above sea level with superb views , if you get the weather. We did and felt ourselves fortunate. Built in the 1920's doormen hold open... More

Don't waste your time expecting something special from judging this book by it cover . yes the building is impressive for NZ ,if the painting and internal repairs fixed it could be excellent .The food is ok . Their attempt at High Tea makes NZ people the laughing stock of Europe . obviously the management are to apathetic to research... More

Great place and we were to partake in the 'High Tea" at the Chateau. we arrived 10 minutes late due to the horrendous weather. Greeted by the front of house person, who could have been more welcoming in his questions about whether we had a booking etc. Our waitress took our orders and after 5 minutes brought 2 empty tea... A fabulous hotel, very clean and nice atmosphere. Sat in the lobby with the pianist playing. Also went to chateau cinema (though I could not hear movie and no one checked) Rooms were very comfortable and Heater worked well to keep room warm. Bathroom large with shower and seperately bath. This hotel is very nice, clean and the staff is friendly and ready to help. The food at the restaurant was excellent and the service was very good. This hotel is one of the nicest around. I strongly recommend this hotel to anyone.

Hotel is in a great location in the park, and must have been grand in its day, but is now in need of some sympathetic redecorating. The room was adequate, with a big jacuzzi tub, which was great for soaking tired muscles after the Tongariro crossing. As others reviewers have commented, the service could be improved. We arrived at about... More

You cannot beat the setting of this hotel, and it is very grand from the outside although when getting inside it you realise although clean, it's a bit tired. The staff who are on working visas are very pleasant and helpful. I think a few of the more senior staff could however take a leaf out of the book of... More

This place is one of those grand lodges that is full of history. You can feel it when you walk in the lobby while enjoying the art, tapestries and views. Some of the seating areas may be considered outdated by some, but to me it kept the feel authentic. The room was sufficient, nothing too exciting, views were spectacular. It's... More

Upon driving into the national park, you cannot be but struck by this imposing building. An absolute stunning facade, surrounded by quite stunning landscape, would i dare say, put a lump in anybody's throat. Having parked my hire car, i walked up the imposing front entrance driveway, and entered into the hotel, where my experience and hope for a delightful,... More

We had such a great stay here. The main lobby is like a step back in time and made me wish I was dressed to impress a little more - not that it was necessary. We had a rainy afternoon and almost reveled at the chance to have drinks, dip in the totally cool underground pool, lay in the sauna,... More
