First let me start by saying that this is a 3* hotel and I am keeping this in mind while reviewing it. We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it, but feel that the below info will give one a better idea of what to expect: Location: The accommodation is in Whakapapa Village, close to many trails and walks....

A planned stop over on our way to Auckland. Very relaxed atmosphere and a refreshing mini break that allowed us to unwind. Had a great meal in the restaurant, a relaxed walk around the village in the evening and took advantage of the free spa. Will plan to stop again next time through. Great service from friendly staff.

Arrived here to do the Tongariro Crossing unfortunately rained out. But the hotel is in a terrific spot where you still have access to numerous hikes even on a rainy day. Thought the front desk service was very helpful. Beautiful views from the room even on a rainy day. Cons--paid internet. Felt the room's furnishings were old and dated. Note:...

We stayed there before and after the Tongariro Circuit and were more than satisfied. We got a 3 bed room for the two of us so plenty of space. There is everything: fully equipped kitchen, a sink in the room, hot tub (free), free parking over several days, hot showers and everything is so clean! Special thanks to Sonya at...

Fantastic value for money. Could not fault this Resort. Staff were brilliant. Resort has everything you need. We'll be back to do some other walks. Highly recommend this package if you are doing Tongariro crossing.

The queen+single (which they gave the 3 of us for $87 per night, the price of the less luxurious room that we reserved) was spacious and light-filled, with comfortable beds and lots of hot water (a bit hard to turn off). The dining room was staffed by really nice young people (but the best items ran out at the continental...

If you are a young trekking enthusiast this may be your place. We are beyond the age and were quite unhappy with the facilities. Shared bathrooms are a problem. The rooms have minimal equipment. The restaurant was a pleasant surprise, so was the well assorted bar. Internet connectivity comes at 5 NZD and did not work well.

After our rainy walk in the Whakapapa area we decided to finish with a dinner in the Skotel Alpine Resort. The food we ordered was obviously ready before the order. We received the meal within minutes after we ordered it. So far for a nice and relaxed dinner. For desert we decided to take some time before ordering so at...

The rooms themselves are basic and probably require some TLC. However, the rooms themselves were clean, the staff were good, meals were great, and the view is spectacular. The hotel served as a base for us to do the Tongariro Crossing or other hikes in the area as we stayed there for our Topdeck tour.

this hotel is in whakapapa village which is a good base for the Tongariro Crossing and mount Ruapehu. the staff are friendly and helpful and it was very easy to arrange a shuttle service for the crossing trek. The rooms are in need of some TLC (dirty curtains) and the layout of the room is somewhat strange - shower and...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Skotel was established in the early 60s by a group of keen skiers who wanted the convenience of accommodation close to the ski-fields but more comfort than the ski lodges of that time. In 1986 it underwent a major expansion with the addition of restaurant, bar and other facilities. The old part of the building became the backpacker’s wing. Skotel has maintained its friendly informal atmosphere but now provides Qualmark three star accommodation and the exciting cuisine experiences of our new dinner menu. ... more   less
