The Mimslyn Inn garners praise for its service, with many guests finding the staff friendly and professional, although some inconsistencies have been noted. While the inn exudes historical charm, a few travelers mention discomfort due to the snug rooms and dated furnishings. Amenities are generally appreciated for their historic appeal, but some guests find them lacking and report difficulties in booking services like the spa. Concerning value, there's a sentiment that the price may not always reflect the quality, especially given the amenity and upkeep issues. The cleanliness and cozy ambiance of the rooms receive positive remarks, despite some missing expected amenities and the need for better-provided essentials like soap.

I've been wanting to attend the murder mystery weekends at Mimslyn for probably two years and finally pulled the trigger (pun intended) on attending. This will serve as a general review and also provide information which I had a hard time coming upon before our first visit.

Overall, the hotel is quite nice, very historic. The rooms are quaint and the town has a variety of local shops you can walk to. It's not too far from some rustic wineries, distilleries, breweries and of course the Luray Caverns. In short, you won't find yourself bored during free time.

The murder mystery was a ton of fun! It was extremely well run, had a thoroughly engaging storyline and excellent actors that really drove the action forward. I can see why people have been back multiple times. I highly recommend this weekend-long engaging murder mystery experience.

OK, now to some practical information as to how the weekend works and other things to know (no spoilers, I promise).

Dress Code: Guests wore a range of clothing from casual (sweatshirts, t-shirts, jeans, etc.) to more formal (jackets, suits, dresses, etc.). We attended in the fall so no one wore shorts, but I'd suspect this would be acceptable during the warmer months - especially for daytime activities.

The Schedule: The mystery kicks off with a Friday evening cocktail hour which started for us at 5:30 and ran about 90 minutes. Saturday activities revolved around Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner with free time to explore the local area between the meals/show. Sunday morning was a final breakfast and the big reveal of the mystery which began at 9:30. We were on the road by 11 - plenty of time to get home before football.

The Food: Other than Friday night, all meals are included in your stay. So you get breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast Sunday. There were some light snacks served Friday and a drink ticket for a cocktail from the bar. The food was typical buffet fare - except for Saturday dinner which was plated delivery and was higher quality than the other meals.

The Social Game: Interacting with other guests is a big part of the experience. I'm not the most social of people so this hampered our sleuthing a bit but everyone was so engaged and into it and you had meals with other guests that it made gathering intel a bit easier. Everyone is really into the event and happy to engage and discuss - but TRUST NO ONE!

Overall, this was an excellent experience. Even if you don't solve the mystery you'll have a good time noodling on it all weekend and coming up with wacky theory after wacky theory. For anyone interested in a weekend away with a bit of murder intrigue, I highly recommend it.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Murder Mystery Weekend at The Mimslyn Inn! We're thrilled to hear that after two years of anticipation, the event lived up to your expectations. We take pride in offering a historic and charming atmosphere at our hotel, and we're glad you enjoyed exploring the local area. Luray has so much to offer, from its quaint shops to nearby wineries and, of course, the stunning Luray Caverns. It's fantastic to know that you found the murder mystery event engaging and well-executed. It's wonderful to hear that you found it enjoyable and that you were able to dive into the intrigue with fellow guests. We appreciate your detailed feedback on the schedule, dress code, and meals. We strive to provide a variety of experiences, from the initial cocktail hour to the big reveal on Sunday morning, giving guests the perfect blend of structured activities and free time. It's also great to hear your thoughts on the food — we aim to balance casual buffet offerings with a more upscale dining experience on Saturday evening. Your insights about the social aspects of the event are very valuable, especially for potential guests who may be less outgoing. We're glad that despite this, the group's enthusiasm helped you enjoy the experience and piece together clues with others. Thank you for your high recommendation! We hope to see you at another Murder Mystery Weekend in the future. Until then, safe travels, and we hope your next visit is just as memorable!

Stayed for 3 nights and really liked the hotel and its location, we chose to stay here for access to Shenandoah NP as it meant we had somewhere to go on an evening as well. We were travelling around Virginia and West Virginia and this was the only hotel in the 5 we stayed at during our trip that serviced the room each day as standard. Ate at the Speakeasy one evening and it was lovely. Our only gripe was the lack of any amenities in room such as coffee making facilities and/or fridge. We asked whether this could be provided to be told that coffee is available 24hrs in reception which is great but trailing to reception in my PJ’s first thing is not my idea of fun, the one time we did it the coffee had been sat a while and water lukewarm.

Stayed for 12 nights in the Lewis cottage and 1 night in the hotel. The cottage was very nice and would work just fine for a short stay for a family. The pool is literally right behind the cottages which are situated behind and up slope from the hotel. I would recommend speaking directly with someone at the hotel when booking as I believe that the cottages very in size, bath layout, etc. The Lewis Cottage has a two person table in the living/dining area and two queen beds. The shower is in a jetted tub with a very high side and no grab bar, so this could very well be inaccessible to older people. Housekeeping was different each day, but usually made the bed and removed the trash and actually washed a plate and glass in the sink on more than one occasion. They did forget me entirely on one day which was not a huge issue as I was staying alone and had adequate towels, etc.

I needed to stay one day more than was planned and even though they were very busy that weekend they were able to give me in a very small room in the Inn itself. The room was very compact but perfectly adequate for my needs. The resident manager and the inn staff were friendly and efficient and I appreciated their efforts to accommodate me. I have stayed at a number of historic hotels and this one has been nicely updated and is very well maintained.

I ate one evening at the Speakeasy and it was very good with friendly staff. I did sit on the porch of the Inn one evening which had a lovely mountain view.

The entire stay was very quiet and relaxing. There is a hospital next door behind a tree line out of view and a rescue/ambulance service, but they seem to be very careful to not use their sirens when approaching the area.

I would recommend the Inn for a nice weekend stay as a couple and the cottages for a short family trip.

We visited the Mimslyn Inn 10 years ago and loved it. We traveled back to the area to stay here once again and this time rented the Panorama Cottage at a total rate of $260+, splurging a little on what we'd normally pay for a hotel room. For that price I am really upset at Mimslyn. The ceiling fan in the bedroom made a really loud whirring noise that clearly needed to be repaired so we could not use it, else we'd get no sleep due to how loud it was. The sliding glass door in the shower area was completely off its tracks on the bottom, which was dangerous and could have hurt someone since it could be pulled/pushed all the way into the bathtub and potentially break. Because of this, the door would not stay open and made bathing our daughter difficult. That bathroom area had quite a bit of mold/mildew as well, which really needed to be cleaned out.

Was it the worst on the scale of hotels we've stayed at? Nope. But for that much money, Mimslyn needs to be checking their rooms and fixing them so they're ready and SAFE for guests before renting the rooms. I told guest services on the way out and they were very receptive, which I guess was nice. This review serves as an opportunity for improvement so guests feel like they've received value in their money spent when traveling across the country to come stay at this iconic hotel.

My wife and I celebrated our wedding post-ceremony with close family (17 adults and 7 kids) in the Circa dining room and then stayed in the Byrds Nest Cottage for 2 nights. We would do it again, but there are some things about the trip that earned 3 stars instead of 5.

The sales Director Ryann assisted with making reservations via email. She was very helpful, pleasant, and accommodating. If this review was based on our interaction alone, I would have given a 5. Before working with Ryann, we were helped on the phone by a gentleman who didn’t seem too excited to work at the inn and wasn’t interested in finding answers to questions for us.

When we arrived at the Inn, everything was lovely. The architecture, art, and atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for. Unfortunately, the ratio of pleasant to unpleasant employees was about even. Some were polite, smiled, and sparked up conversation, some didn’t communicate much so it was hard to tell if they were just shy, but some were straight up rude.

The private event bartender was RUDE and there was nothing we could have done to help her change her attitude. After my father tipped her, my wife tried to tip more and when she asked where the tip jar was, her response was “it’s been out all night and I just put it away, but I can bring it out again” with a snarky tone. I understand folks in the service industry earn their money off of tips, but when we are celebrating and enjoying our night, the last thing we are thinking is to put a tip out before the jar gets put away. She earned $90 over the course of 3 hours.

The dinner was very good, although they dropped a few of the desserts. One of the very nice servers brought us out a variety of other desserts to make up for it.

Our room was very clean, the hot tub was private. We enjoyed the outside seating for a bit. Very peaceful.

The next evening we went to dinner at the speakeasy. Food was delicious again and our bartender/server was fabulous.

The next day we packed up our room by 10 and went to breakfast, leaving our leftovers in the fridge to retrieve after eating. Around 1045, my wife returned to the room to grab half of a pizza, our leftovers from dinner, a gingerale, a pedialyte, and our dessert, only to be left with the dessert moved from the freezer to the fridge and our food gone. (Checkout isn’t until 11am). The 3 cleaning ladies driving the golf cart waited for us to leave so they could snack on some yummies. Uckk

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent stay at the Inn. We are pleased to hear that you celebrated your post-wedding ceremony with us and appreciated the accommodation, the Circa dining room, and the Byrds Nest Cottage. However, we deeply regret that some aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations, and for that, we sincerely apologize. It's heartening to hear that Ryann, our Sales Director, was able to assist you with your reservations effectively. We truly value the positive interactions with our staff, and we're grateful for your kind words about her. We are, however, concerned about the inconsistency in service you encountered. We want to extend our apologies for any employee who may not have met the level of friendliness and professionalism that we strive for. Your comments about the private event bartender's attitude have been duly noted, and we will use this as a training opportunity to ensure our staff is always courteous and accommodating. We are delighted that you enjoyed the dinner at our establishment and the responsiveness of our servers in addressing any issues. The fact that your room was clean and the hot tub and outside seating were peaceful added positively to your stay. Regarding the incident with the cleaning staff taking your leftovers, this is absolutely unacceptable and not reflective of our standards. We deeply apologize for this inconvenience. We are taking this matter very seriously and will make sure to address it with our staff to ensure it doesn't happen in the future. We appreciate your feedback as it helps us to continually improve our services and provide the best possible experience for our guests. Your satisfaction is of utmost importance to us, and we hope you will consider returning in the future to enjoy a much-improved experience. If you have any further concerns or would like to discuss your stay in more detail, please feel free to reach out to me directly. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back and provide you with a more seamless and enjoyable stay.

A solid, well decorated, decent standard hotel. However it wasn’t special for the cost of in excess of $300 for a double room booked well in advance for our one night. It failed the value for money test as, on arrival, we noticed on the internet it was advertised for around $200.

Our bedroom was clean, quiet and comfortable, adequate in size rather than large, overlooking the car parking areas. We had good wifi and a tv but no room safe. The bathroom was tiny with virtually no ventilation, after a shower it became a steamy sauna.

The food and service at dinner in Circa ‘31 were good but, with few diners, was devoid of ambience in what is really a large banqueting/function room. Similarly breakfast was fine but served in the same cavernous virtually empty space.

This is a lovely hotel! It's classy and elegant, and overall it'll make your vacation that much more special. The location is great, as you can walk to restaurants or other places in Luray. The Luray Caverns are a quick drive away, as is a Walmart and Food Lion, and Skyline Drive's Thornton Gap Entrance is close by. I ate at the Circa '31 restaurant for breakfast, which was reasonably priced (the menu is small with a few standard breakfast options). Free coffee and muffins in the lobby at all times. The Speakeasy restaurant is very good, and has various specials/deals each night. The bedrooms are small, but comfortable. The grounds are beautiful, with an area for bonfires and hammocks, as well as a pool and hot tub area. The staff is very kind and accommodating.

A few recommendations for the management:
~Put mini fridges in the rooms
~Put chairs on the balcony so people can use it as a sitting area
~Something to provide more counter space in the bathrooms

I recommend the Mimslyn Inn to anyone staying in the Luray area!

We stayed at the Mimslyn Inn as a family of 3 with a baby. The staff were helpful, providing a crib for us to use, and answering any questions we had throughout the stay. We ate at the restaurant one night and the food was good, fresh and tasty, and the staff friendly.

We were a little disappointed that the hotel decor and furniture felt quite tired. It’s a beautiful building and decorated in a historic style, but nonetheless felt like it needed some redecoration and refreshing. The bathroom was quite dated in particular, and the heating system very loud, again due to being quite dated. Our room had single-glazed windows which made it quite cold and they were constantly steamed up so we could not see out. While our room was serviced each day, dirty glasses were not refreshed, which was a shame.

We had breakfast at the hotel one day, it was adequate but not as good as we would have hoped given the price - local diners are better value.

Overall our stay was fine, but we expected better for the price.

A little over rated! And over priced, for what you actually get. Amenities were very limited.
Our bathroom had 1 (ONE)
tiny bar of soap, the size of a 50 cent piece, and as thin as a dime! If you wanted to wash your hands, you had to get the soap from the shower, then put it back in shower afterwards. At least have a soap at the vanity AND one for the shower! The couch in the"sitting area" of the room was in bad shape!
There was a tiny TV.
1 luggage rack ... 2 of us, so we called down to ask for another and were told they were all being used and they'd get us one later. ?? Shouldn't each room have them?? Every where else we have ever stayed had 2.
We had read the reviews and were expecting way more! It's a beautiful place, but for what the rooms cost, we expected a whole lot more. Very disappointed.

We stayed at the Mimslyn Inn this past week as it was our plan to visit the Luray Caverns. The location for this visit was perfect. However, the hotel was a bit dated and in need of some TLC. Chairs and couches had some stains, the remote did not change the tv channels and the price did not include breakfast. We had returned from a lovely historical inn in Asheville that was nothing short of perfect, and that hotel price was less than the Mimslyn, and included a most wonderful breakfast. While I did not keep the check out receipt, our friends said our rooms at the Mimslyn included a historical preservation fee. Would be nice to use that fee to spruce the place up a bit.

There is a spa on site but not sure about the current status. It’s by reservation if I recall correctly.
