Ive been staying at the Open Arms hostel for about a week and may extend for another week while I am in the area. Allison is a sweet, and helpful lady who runs a professional, clean hostel. She is very knowledgable about hiking and hiking trails nearby and she even fixed my glasses for me so I can write this review :>. She has a lovely old home with lots of space for tired treckers or people who just need a place to stay in the area if you don t mind sharing...Sharing is fun! You get to meet new people!

Allison is a very welcoming guest. Her place has all the charm of a small town, but she goes out of her way to make you sure you are comfortable and rested, so you can enjoy Luray and all it has to offer.

I've been in hostels before, but I can say even if you haven't, Allison's place really gives you a good idea of all the good aspects of being in one. Highly recommend!

Hi my name is Steps with StepsTrailPhptography or STP . I’m a thruhiker going south and stopped by here yesterday, and am still here today. It is truly an open arms hostel. And I felt welcomed by the owner Allison.

Alison does not just offer all that a hostel should be, she is very knowledgeable about hikers and their stories as evidenced by the map of the handmade Appalachian trail on her wall with key points marked and a gallery of photos to the left of it. This was the best location to stay before hiking Old Rag.

This is a private home with three guest bedrooms, with multiple single beds in each (3 or 4). It's very clean and well kept. All the amenities that you would expect. Usual hostel rules such as no smoking, clean up after yourself, quiet hours, etc. The owner/host is very helpful and will shuttle folks to and from the Appalachian Trail at Thornton Gap (Rt. 211). I've stayed here several times and highly recommended it.

When looking for a shuttle service from Swift Run Gap to Thornton Gap - Alison was quick to respond, reasonably priced, and prompt. She was also very friendly, and the hour-long ride after four days of hiking was pleasant. We stopped at the hostel on the way, so that she could pick up a guest who also wanted to go to Thornton Gap, and we were treated to a mini-tour of the hostel. Everything was clean and well thought out for the hikers- I would recommend it for any through hikers or young travelers. Alison seems to ‘mother’ them all - in a good way.

I spent a night off-season at Open Arms Hostel to go hiking after a work trip in the area. The hostel was clean and cozy, and the host Alison offered me some needed positivity. The hostel offers kitchen privileges and a relaxing environment to recharge.

I've stayed here before. It's a really nice place and Alison is a great host. She's present and helpful. The rooms are large and spotless. Shared bath, as expected in a hostel. The beds are not double-bunks as are found in most hostels, which is helpful for those who don't like to climb into an upper bunk (when I was younger and more agile, the upper bunk was my choice!). Nice restaurants with carryout nearby (try Dominicos Italian). All in all, a great choice!

We did not stay on this visit. I went to check out the location as Open Arms was recommended by a friend, who stayed with here a couple times. Allison the host was very helpful. The rooms are affordable for hikers and weary travelers. For under 35.00 you get a clean bed, shower and kitchen privileges. The hostel has an area for tent and hammock hikers. Plus, two large porches for resting and socializing. Open Arms provides trailhead pick up hikers. Showers and laundry facilities. She had picked up three hikers the day I visited. A large thunder storm had just passed through on the Shenandoah’s. It a very good place to recharge after a long trek on the Appalachian Trail. Open Arms is a very appropriate name.
