Nestled on Waikiki Beach, the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, is lauded for its historic allure and beachfront location, ideal for those eager to explore Waikiki. However, the charm may be overshadowed by critiques of its petite pool, the extra fees for beach loungers, and varying guest experiences with staff and service. While the atmosphere is often lively with music and nostalgia, noise can be intrusive, and the accommodations may disappoint with their dated decor and size. Additionally, some visitors feel the costs outweigh the benefits, citing steep prices for rooms and on-site amenities.

Hello everyone
You guys must wonder why such a beautiful hotel and I only gave 3 stars ?

Firstly the building has attracted me that’s why I chose to stay here this time.
Checking in was ok but we have to wait for the room till 3 pm which I understand
Inside was old and the minutes I walked into our room I went Omg the room so old , furniture ugly and old we have book the bigger room which has 3beds and one rolled bed , but just 1 bedside table which is another disappointing. Then I walk into the bathroom I immediately want to checked out but room already been paid too bad nothing much I can do .
Bathroom was tiny. And the bath room door stupid enough is to open out so we have to used at least 3 floor mat a day or even use towel to clean water . Basin was so small can’t even fit all our make up .
No tooth brush , no shower cap , no sleeper in room , no body wash .. OMG it’s worth than 4 stars and we paid like $1.100 aud + $40usd service fees and plus tax per night you will have to settle the bills with a lot of extra so be ready for that. Also be aware of booked room for 3 read careful because they will change you $125 usd per person which has never happened to me in any other hotel .
When I booked 3 mean I already paid for 3 but with Moana you will have to be extra caution 😂
In room dinning nothing really great either.

Every time we went out we don’t want to go back to our room because we don’t feel the comfortable of 5 stars hotel at all..

We won’t comeback to this hotel again
The only reason I stayed this time just the location , excellent location that’s is all I like. Service in general wasn’t great if compare to most 5 stars I have been

This review I wrote based on a very experienced traveller and I always stayed in good hotel , Moana is one of the worse on my list. The same amount $1100 aud i spent I could get a much better 5 stars anywhere around the world. So I won’t recommended if you like beautiful room and a clean beautiful bathroom this hotel only can provide you the building itself and location that’s all , sorry no in room photos because it nothing there for us to even take a photo !

Room are Bad
Service very average

My husband and I stayed at the Moana Surfrider for 5 days for the first portion of our honeymoon. Since my husband is Titanium Elite with Marriott, we were initially excited about the prospect of using the hotel’s club lounge (but unfortunately that’s not an option right now due to COVID). Nonetheless, the staff went above and beyond in other ways including providing us with a free continental breakfast each morning during our stay. The location of the Moana Surfrider on Waikiki Beach cannot be beat. We also loved the reciprocity for room charge at other Marriott hotels including the Royal Hawaiian along the beach. Our best dinner during our stay in Oahu was actually on property at the Beachhouse. Service was excellent throughout our stay. Live music was available each night by the Banyan Tree and there was an even more amazing performance on piano in the lobby on Saturday evening. Only idiosyncrasy I noted was it was hard to get your hands on coffee and water at the hotel. I recommend purchasing a reusable water bottle or buying something at the local ABC store because it’s $7 for one Aquafina at the stand by the pool. Additionally, no fault of the Moana staff - but the situation with COVID on the island has bred some tension between locals and visiting tourists. Outside of the Moana, we did not always encounter the aloha spirit. Just be aware that if you’ve visited Hawaii before, it won’t be exactly as you remember it. We spent the latter portion of our honeymoon in Maui and the restrictions were comparatively relaxed there.

We got a smoking deal on the Westin Surfrider due to COVID and so we were fortunate to stay at this lovely hotel. Here are the highlights:

Location: The location is perfect in the heart of Waikiki with a gorgeous beach and tons of restaurants nearby.

Beach: Is clean and gorgeous. You have to rent the beach chairs and umbrella from the Westin if you want to utilize them. There are locals and people from other hotels that fill the beach behind the Westin and it can get crowded.

Pool: Is a little small for a hotel this size and isn't super kid friendly. If you travel with kids, I recommend the Sheraton as the pool is better for kids. This pool is smaller and was pretty cold this time of year. No one really went in it.

Rooms: We stayed in the tower with a city and water view. It was very spacious. But I will say these rooms are going to need an upgrade in the next couple of years. They aren't really dated yet, but it's coming with the older granite and tile colors that exist. Still it was comfortable and the bed was nice.

Other: The restaurants were open.. that was a plus. Everything is pricey like what you would imagine at a resort and menus were limited due to COVID but the food was good and drinks were plentiful. The lobby area is gorgeous and the outside rocking chairs are so nice. There was hand sanitizer everywhere and masks are required in any common area. There was live music during sunset.

We will definitely stay here again.

Beautiful resort but get ready to pay at least 50% more than you expected to pay on your room rate. What's more, when I stayed 11/21 - 11/23, I was platinum elite so was supposed to get a whole host of benefits including free breakfast, a suite upgrade if available, etc.

Come to learn that the Platinum benefit for breakfast is a $15pp credit at the pool side cafe which gets you a coffee and croissant to takeaway, not to sit in. What’s that, you want a hot breakfast? Don’t worry, that’s just a $14 upcharge per person.

Do you want to sit on the beach? Shouldn't be a problem right? I mean the resort fee is an additional $50 per night! Apparently, that gives you access to the pool deck (if you can find a chair because it's perpetually rammed). If you want a couple chairs and an umbrella within the hotel's roped off section of the beach, it will cost you $65/day

Suite upgrade? Forget about it. Despite the hotel being at just about 50% occupancy, due to covid, there weren't people available to clean suites and make them available to their most loyal customers.

The hotel is already priced at premium vs. all the other hotels in Waikiki. But the experience provided and the additional costs charged leave a really terrible taste in your mouth. No more being Bonvoyed for me , thank you!

We stayed at the. Moana for 4 nights recently and had a wonderful time. We had a beautiful room with views of the Pacific as well as Diamond head on the 12th floor in the Tower Building. Our lovely balcony was quite private and you could see the entire beach and even the pool area. So fun watching the early morning surfers and just the crowds of people. Our room was well kept by the excellent housekeeping staff who were always pleasant and willing to do anything requested including delivering extra water bottles and towels. The front desk personnel were quite helpful and friendly. Our favorite staff were the fun people who ran and organized the "towel hut" and so graciously put out our towels on reserved chais loungers at the beach. Big thing to remember, reserve your chairs at least 24hours in advance. They get taken really fast!!! We visited all the hotel's restaurants and truly enjoyed all with the exception of the he Beach House which we had hoped would be a lovely dinner. Unfortunately, it was poor!!! Service was just okay. The food was rather mediocre for the price especially. However, highly recommend all the others. The Beach Bar is a lively place all day and evening long.

I simply could not have asked for more. This historic venue is visually stunning and located perfectly on Waikiki Beach, in the midst of all the hubbub. From the minute we alit from the taxi bringing us from the airport, we encountered only friendly, helpful and efficient staff— each individual took the time to make sure we were taken care of well. Polite, quick and friendly. I for one was extremely impressed and have nothing but high marks for all staff at this location, including those who weren’t necessarily employed by the hotel but staffed the stores in the lobby or the surf shop just on the beach.
Our room was spacious and incredibly clean
with a glorious large patio overlooking the beach and the ocean. Likewise the bathroom was well-maintained and included every accessory we may have needed. Two thumbs up for the heated toilet seat, a luxury we had not encountered in our travels but quickly got used to and honestly sincerely miss. Even with Covid restrictions at a high in Hawaii, the staff was ever present keeping things tidy. The dining options were open air, on the water with decent food at expected Oahu prices. There were complementary classes given by the hotel as part of the package although due to Covid concerns, attendance had to be severely limited – we were able to take hula classes and flower bracelet making classes to the delight of my daughter. There was live music in the lobby, an excellent piano player who sang, adding just the right touch to the elegant ambience floating through the place. For what we received during our stay I would have to say that the pricing was extremely competitive.
Would go back to this location in a heartbeat

My wife and I spent a few days at the Moana Surfrider in January 2020. It is a historic hotel right on Waikiki Beach and the location is perfect. It is really the best location on Waikiki Beach and is only meters from the water. It is also just steps from restaurants, shopping and entertainment in the Waikiki district.

The history at this hotel is magnificent. It has great character but it is very busy and it will not be a quiet peaceful stay. They have a wonderful veranda in the front and back with large chairs to watch the world go round.

The restaurants are good but not great. The staff don’t really know the menu and couldn’t tell us what items were gluten free. We were actually told that the chef didn’t know if the bacon was gluten free or not. I would be highly surprised if that actually was the case.

We stayed in the old Banyan Wing. Rooms are small in this section and there are no balconies but they are 100 years old and filled with character. We knew what we were getting and decided to stay in the smaller rooms.

Having traveled to several different hotels in various cities and countries, the Moana Surfrider is the only hotel in which my wife and I unanimously agreed we had stayed in the best possible place. Among hotels in Waikiki, you can’t beat the Moana’s ambiance, amenities, and above all LOCATION. Seriously, one cannot overstate the importance of having the ability to conveniently walk between your room and the beach in just a matter of steps.

The hotel proudly wears its history on its sleeve which gives it a unique atmosphere, however, the rooms and public spaces are still well-kept, comfortable, and in no way felt tired or run down. The staff somehow manages to keep the grounds spotless despite lots of traffic flowing through the lobby at all times.

We often opted for more authentic food offerings around the island—with that being said, the food and drinks we had on-site were good, if a bit on the pricey side. The resort fee is also hefty but par for the course for hotels in this type of city; it also includes serviceable WiFi which is a nice touch. The room rate was incredibly fair for our stay in early May.

Service was fantastic throughout, especially at valet/the bell stand. Live musicians in the lobby lounge and Beach Bar each night were also impressive.

The only downside was noise—we were prepared for noise coming from the Beach Bar musicians/entertainers on Kalakaua Ave, but there was also the occasional issue hearing sounds from upstairs and the hallways pretty clearly. Nevertheless, we never had any issues staying asleep through the night.

Overall, we can’t recommend the Moana Surfrider enough. This is the only place I can guarantee I’d return to if every returning to Oahu.

Upon check in, we were told by the front desk agent, that the hotel was oversold and our rooms that we booked were not available! I called a week before, to insure that our two rooms were either connecting or close together, in house reservations noted the request and I felt confident that the requests would be taken care of. I find it completely unacceptable that the room type that I booked wasn’t available. This isn’t the first time this has happened to us staying at this property! They tried to offer me dining credits and no resort fee for accepting a lower room category. At 700.00 per room per night all I was asking for was was a higher floor in the category I booked. As a Bonvoy gold member I’m eligible for an enhanced upgrade, which means same category but a higher floor. As a gold member this means nothing at this property! Completely disappointed with this Westin. Seems to me they don’t care, it’s all about revenue. I still don’t understand why they sold my rooms I booked and that were guaranteed. So here we are on the 4th floor rooms 485 and 491 no sun looking on to a roof with a small view of the ocean and a very noisy kitchen across from us, nice!We got “left overs.” We checked in at 1:15 wasted a 1/2hour explaining why I should get the room category I booked. The front desk manager did apply a 100 food/beverage credit to 1 room. This being said, I would have rather had the rooms I booked on a higher floor. The resort fee is another thorn in my side, 37.00 per room/night. This property, doesn’t honour requests. Next time I will be looking at other properties that don’t sell my room to someone else and that treat me right. I wasn’t asking for much. I did reach out to Marriott customer relations and the nice lady thought that it my experience was a bit outrageous.

I stayed in a Tower Suite at the Moana Surfrider for 3 nights. I got in around 11pm on 01/31. I went to bed immediately… around an hour into my sleep, I can feeling something crawling on my face and in my ear. I turn the lights on and discover the bed is covered in tiny centipede-like bugs. Could it be bed bugs?. Anyway I killed most of them. The next day I went to talk to the representative at the front desk, he told me that it’s definitely not bedbugs but if I wanted a different room, it would be an additional charge of $100 for the Premiere suite. I said I’d tough it out. When I was checking out two days later, I was not happy. Again had these bed bugs all over me at night. I should pictures at the front desk. The representative went to the back to speak to her manager, she came back and told me that these are not bedbugs, but TERMITES and I don’t need to worry. I paid $800 A NIGNT for this room and they offered to waive the $37 resort fee which is in addition to the $800 for my inconvenience with the termites.

Also room was very noisy. I usually stay at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort and the room is way better insulated because it is quieter.

In summary, I paid more than $800 a night to stay in a room filled with inspects/bed bugs/termites whatever you want to call it. In return, my “resort fee” of $37 was waived. The resort fee includes two bottles of water.

Hi They charge for every little thing. I don’t mind to pay as long as I get the service I am paying for. I travel a lot and unfortunately my experience at this hotel was beyond disappointing. Maybe try to find some other fun activities for your daughter’s 16th bday in Hawaii. Food is very average too at this hotel and I didn’t like their breakfast buffet. Good luck!

They are in the historic portion and can overlook the newer towers, the ocean or the street in front. I prefer staying in the historic building, it is beautiful but the rooms are smaller than that of the newer towers. For 2 I would prefer the banyan rooms.
