The Shangri-La Rasa Sayang in Penang offers an atmosphere that is both tranquil and elegant, especially in the Rasa Wing, despite some remarks about dated decor. Guests frequently commend the cleanliness and the attentive service that enhances their experience. While the Rasa Wing's exclusive amenities and dining options are popular among travelers, there are suggestions of areas that could benefit from renovation. The hotel's spacious rooms, particularly in the Rasa Wing, come with extra luxuries, although maintenance issues have been noted. Its prime location is consistently praised, offering guests easy access to the beach and local attractions. Opinions on value vary, with some finding the exclusive benefits of the Rasa Wing to be worth the cost, while others feel the hotel doesn't fully live up to 5-star standards.

From the moment we arrived this hotel proved to exceed all our expectations, and throughout our 4 days there, we could honestly not find a single fault. The staff were all incredibly friendly and cheeful, and could not do enough for us. Breakfast was superb with a wide choice of bot Asian and European food. The pool was lovely, the rooms were spotless, and fortunately there were no jellyfish around so we could swim in the sea.
Little touches like ice being brought to our room every evening, fresh fruit every day in our rooms, a surprise biscuit or sweet left in our room daily all just added to our pleasure and enjoyment.
There always seemed to be adequate sunbeds, and I liked the hotel policy of removing towels from beds if they had been left unoccupied for more than an hour! We ate out most nights at Batu Ferrengi which is onoly a 5 minute walk - would definitely recommend Andrew's Kampung restaurant. We took the hotel shuttle to Georgetown, and then found the CAT free hop on hop off bus which took us round. Excellent day out!
One of the very best hotels we have ever holidayed at. You set the standard, and if we were to return to Penang, it would definitely be to the Shangri-La.

Lysa and Harum at front desk were very helpful and smiling.
We stayed in a premium room in the Rasa wing, really big and spacious, with a bath tub on the balcony with plenty of privacy thanks to motorised blinds.
The grounds are just beautiful with flowers and huge trees and a perfect lawn.
Travelling with a 3-year old we were not allowed to use the Rasa wing pool, which looked amazing, instead having to use the larger pool on the other side of the resort, but overall not an issue.
After a few days of intense visits in Georgetown the ShangriLa provided the needed rest and chillout we needed.
Breakfast, high tea and evening drinks were very nice, although not quite at the level of other Shangri La hotels, like BGK.
Staff generally very nice and attentive.
Location wise, the beach is nice and clean but we really didn't spend any time there, most of the fun was on the hotel grounds and the swimming pool.
The Spa is amazing, great traditional decor and good traditional treatments on the menu.
The hotel restaurant is nice, very clean and with a good atmosphere, with good traditional food but also pasta and other western options.
Overall a great stay.

We have just spent a very enjoyable 10 nights at this hotel. We decided to pay the extra to stay in the Rasa Wing and treated ourselves to a junior suite, which was very spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed the benefits of staying in the Rasa Wing ( afternoon tea, choice of breakfast location, drinks/snacks in the evening, exclusive pool), and these were worth the extra cost. We were very well looked after at the pool by Muru and Bilpul. Many guests have been returning for years and I can see why. We cannot fault any aspect of the service that we received. If we were being picky, it was a bit expensive to eat/drink in the hotel, however, lots of local choices only a few minutes walk away. Also, the beach ( which was a public one, so the hotel cannot be held responsible )was not particularly clean. OK for a walk, but not swimming, although a few brace souls did venture in.

We have travel to multiple hotels the summer during Covid all of which have exceeded our expectations in cleanliness in service I would’ve expected even more from the Shangri La. We are Shangri-La members and enjoy Shangela hotels all over the world so I was so sad to be so disappointed. Upon arrival we were there a check in time but our room is not ready so we told the lady we were going to the beach she was not very helpful did not get very much information at all about making dinner reservations wish I wish we would have nor did she tell me that there were significant jellyfish and the beach was partially closed. We were thrilled to see that the pool is open but I was surprised the lady at the front desk did not tell us that. No problem my son was happy to play for but 4:45 came around and we were finally able to get into room which only gave us time to drop off our bags before we met friends for dinner at a different location. I noticed the room was not clean it as I had hoped it would be but I assumed maybe there would be more cleaning done during a turn down service came back after dinner to find that we had no turn down service and the room is still dirty. there is trash on the floor hair all over the bathroom and my phone was covered in sticky juice that I had lay down on the nightstand next to us.I called the front desk to ask if they can clean it in the morning as I had to put my son to bed and they said we would at 9 am. we waited and waited and no one came to our room to clean until 1:00 PM. The safe did not work during our stay which is frustrating and the lady at the front desk was not apologetic or checked in on us about room not being clean. There is no turn down service, no coffee maker in the room ...But we were not gonna let all of the above ruin our trip.We have tried to make reservations at the for a Negro upon arrival and they were already fully booked so we went down to the pool café which does not take reservations and they said they were full we would have to wait over an hour to be seated which does not work with the hungry toddler so then we went to the spice market and the lady said they were fully booked so then I lost it a bit and demanded that we had a place to eat so they made us a table. I have to say the restaurant staff is amazing there so incredibly helpful and their service is great they seem to be the only ones at the hotel who truly care about you and are working so incredibly hard. I have to say finally that I’m not comfortable with the way they do the buffet meals here I know they’re trying something different to still do buffet and keep it safe but I did not feel comfortable standing in an incredibly crowded restaurant with so many people not wearing masks. And servers not in gloves as many do. Outdoor seating was nice. All in all it’s a beautiful resort and we had a great trip I’m sure anyone that comes will also have a great trip but my experience soured us enough and it was so overly crowded that we were not extend our stay through the week as we had thought we might. I feel if you book the executive rasa wing suite overlooking the ocean there should be a higher standard of cleanliness and service and there was not.

Having frequented some of the Shangri-La chains other hotels and restaurants I’m sorry to say this is below par.
Front staff not very helpful at all, rooms dated with questionable cleanliness, pool area ran out of beach towels by midday causing major slip hazards through out the hotel caused by very wet people returning to there rooms
Only saving grace for the hotel is the pool facilities and beach access.
Booked under the illusion this hotel would live up to the usual high Shangri-La standards but miserably failed to meet them.
Would recommend removing the Shangri-La name from the hotel and down grading it to a Hotel Jen

This hotel is of a good standard and there is no denying the grounds around the pool are beautiful. We stayed in the Rasa wing which gives access to the kid free pool. On arrival I wasn’t overwhelmed by the decor quickly the friendly welcome from the staff made up for that. The staff cannot do enough for you.

When we entered our room straight away we could smell what could only be described as a very disused bedroom and smelt of damp. A light in the bathroom wasn’t working correctly and a light in the wardrobe wasn’t working. We was so tired having arrived very late we just went to sleep.

The bed in this room was so hard I had the most awful nights sleep and woke up with a bad back and felt like I hadn’t slept at all. We complained and was moved two rooms along. All the items that were broken in the other room were working however the bed was only slightly better but still not comfortable.

Housekeeping was a bit mixed. They claim a manager signs off the standard of the rooms each day however our friends we travelled with had their bathroom fully restocked each day where as ours was hit and miss and we did run out even though shower gel needed replacing.

For a 5 star hotel there is only one choice if lager which I would expect more. It is also very expensive at £7 per bottle of beer.

Breakfast is of a good standard. The afternoon tea each day is a nice touch which is followed up at 5.30pm each day by drinks and nibbles but that has very limit s choice and not enough seating so get there early.

It is only the friendly staff that make this hotel 5 star in my opinion and the management could do with really reviewing the decor of the hotel and improving their offering as well as ensuring rooms standards do meet 5 star across the board. Have said this the hotel did give a bottle of wine for free for the poor standard of the first room but if the checks are being done correctly everyday and beds are comfortable there’s no need to say sorry as guests will overlook small issues but not multiple issues.

Paid extra to stay in Rasa Wing to enjoy its 'exclusive' club facilities which include dedicated breakfast at the Rasa Grill, free afternoon tea and drinks.
The premium sea view room which I stayed enjoys a great Seaview over the garden with an out-door tub in the balconies. The suite is of a reasonable size with separated living and rest areas.
Services are definitely not Shangrila's standards, most staff does not understand basic mannerism. Breakfast at the grill is horrible. Very limited choice even with its a la carte menu. The only alternative is to go having breakfast at the Garden Wing Spice Market; which defeats the point of staying in Rasa Wing for its so-called exclusive services and facilities.
I suppose it's not worth paying the premium to stay in the Rasa Wing for its so-called exclusive facilities.

Just returned from 10 night stay at the Shangri La Rasa Sayang Resort.
We stayed in the Garden Wing and the hotel was lovely with some great facilities.
The room was a good size, with a nice balcony overlooking the main pool with a sea view. the bathroom was also a decent size, with both a bath and seperate shower, which was really powerful.

The room had a safe as well as a small mini bar. A nice touch were the local snacks left on a daily basis as well as 4 bottles of water.

One great aspect was the the room had a really powerful fan, which allowed us to sleep most nights without the aircon being used.

The pool was superb, with plenty of sun beds and towels provided.

The Pinang bar was lovely a lunch time and in the evening. A small menu, but the food was always of a good quality and size.

We used the main restaurant the Spice Cafe mainly for breakfast which catered for all, English, European, India, Chinese, Japanese and Malay options were available and the tea and coffee always flowed.

We have to mention the staff who were lovely from the start and always had a smile on their face, but when things got tough as the Malaysian borders closed, they were superb. We were struggling getting in touch with airlines and travel companies, but they calmed you down, gave you and drink and made the calls for you, regardless of where in the world you were calling.

We had to extend for one day, and even though we were confined to our room, the level of service was outstanding.

I hope things get back to normal as soon as possible for all of us and for the staff who have an uncertain future during this crisis,

The rooms are nice, gardens lovely especially the old trees. The bed was not good and too hard. It had a mattress topper which was originally about 6 cm thick but had collapsed to about 2 mm. Clearly it was ancient and had never been washed. It you book a room make sure items like the topper and electrical items are in good condition.

Buffet food was cold, totally unacceptable given it is so expensive, also orange cordial (coloured sugar water) at breakfast and dinner instead of fruit juices. All the roadside cafes can supply fruit juice but not Shangri-La!

Staff members were great but it seems that senior management are only interested in cost cutting and do not carry out quality checks.

Our second visit and this time is different from the last time as there are many SOPs to comply with due to Covid-19 situation. I'm impressed how organised the breakfast buffet is by adhering the social distance and hygiene measure without sacrifice the variety of food choice or waiting time.
It would be even better if there are more food choice as 1 of the restaurant, Feringgi Grill required formal attire which we didn't prepare for a relaxing weekend getaway. Other than that, it was a pleasant stay and my boy has required to come back for 3rd time :)

I would suggest that you email the Rasa wing reception direct and tell them your room preference. They are usually very good at sorting the best room for you. See you there!

I think I paid about 80ringits last year from hotel to airport. If you do a long stay at the hotel then one way transfer is laid on.

Previous answer spot on re the sand erosion, but steps are being taken to reclaim the beach directly in front of the hotel. However, this is Malaysia so no timescale. I believe they can only place one extra bed in Rasa Wing rooms/suites. However, if you choose a studio suite in the Garden Wing you are entitled to Rasa Wing benefits and they have a regular room next door with a connecting door. We are not pool people, so cannot comment but find it very unlikely it is not fine, the number of people who use it regularly seem happy enough.
