Still our special place - our sixth time staying here over the last 11 years , and it’s our home away from home. Luxurious without being pretentious, lovely staff, wonderful food and drinks, beautiful grounds and pool areas. We like to stay in the Rasa wing as this gives extra perks like the over 16 only pool, free soft drinks at the pool and in the lounge, free drinks between 1730-1900, afternoon tea and al la carte breakfasts in the Feringgi Grill. Loved our room (Junior King Suite) - so much space, and enjoyed a couple of baths on the balcony listening to the waves and the birds.

Hotel's Favourite
After numerous stays at this hotel we could not wait to return post covid to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary and to finish off a month long trip around Malaysia. From the second we checked in until the moment we left everything about our stay exceeded our expectations. We had left a previous hotel earlier than planned and the reservations team had managed to add on a back to back booking for us. On our original booking we had been provided with the exact room number we had requested if possible (many happy family memories attached to this room) but were told it wouldn't be available for the first night of our extended booking. We completely understood this and the staff were amazing at moving everything the next morning for us and making the switch so easily! The premier suite (now named the junior suite) in the Rasa Wing was just as we remembered it. Very spacious, great views over the pool and beach, huge shower, bathtub on the balcony and L'Occitane toiletries. The club lounge benefits were exactly the same as our previous pre-covid tips too, it was like nothing had changed. We had expected things would be a little different post Covid but were pleasantly surprised and this stay exceeded our expectations. Yes, there were a lot of new staff and sometimes you had to wait a little longer than before for tables to be cleared of food to be delivered (especially when it got busy at breakfast or in the Pinang Bar) but obviously this will improve over time as training kicks in and new staff become more confident. Great selection of food at breakfast. We did have a couple of buffet dinners but were not overwhelmed at the quality for the price unfortunately. Food at the Pinang bar was better in the evenings than during the day. Michelle and Markus are both amazing managers that are very hands on, constantly checking standards and ensuring guests are ok. All the staff at every level are friendly with a ready smile. The club lounge always felt welcoming and relaxed whether during cocktail hours or just popping in for a coffee. nothing was ever too much trouble. On arrival at the hotel there were no cushions around the main pool on the sun loungers (they were in the rasa pool and garden area though), but a quick meeting with one of the managers to ask why and they were back on the poolside loungers from the next morning! As said before, the level of customer service at this hotel is amazing and is what keeps us coming back year after year. We have to give a special mention to some stand outs - Kana and Latchu, poolside, are a credit to the team at this hotel. They go above and beyond in terms of customer service and friendliness. Also to Sheikh in housekeeping, who always ensured we had everything we needed in our room, kept the room amazing clean and even provided a small personal gift on our last day. Loved the towel animals in the room too! A lovely consequence of quieter times over the past few years are the resident dusky leaf monkeys that have made the hotel grounds their home. It was amazing to watch their cheeky antics and just hanging out in the trees by the pool. And, of course the monitor lizards that cruise around, sunbake and enjoy a quick dip when the pool is quiet. It is fantastic to be able to enjoy (friendly) wildlife so close while relaxing in the sun around a pool! The beach has also changed a little. Unfortunately due to storms and erosion the beach area is now much smaller. On the plus side the hotel have made the best of a bad situation and we actually prefer the sandy area now around the Pinang Bar and the amazingly open views for those sunsets! We had a 2 night stay in the hotel in their Garden Wing with the ocean view. I'm sure once upon a time it was a magical hotel but you can clearly see the age of the hotel now with the decor and the hotel furniture in the rooms. We went there after a stay at Banyan Tree in KL and it clearly showed the difference in the calibre of customer service. Hotel has a buggy service which you can take to the Golden Sands hotel next door which is closer to all the food stalls and night market. Pool in the Garden Wing is really nice with all the big trees surrounding it. Breakfast buffet was great with a wide range of food available from western to Indian. Highly recommend the buffet!

My family and I booked into the Shangri-La Rasa for a short break whilst visiting Penang. I had a room booked in the Garden Wing and was a little apprehensive having read some of the other reviews but please be assured, the Garden Wing was beautiful and just perfect. The room was large and spacious and was fully equipped with everything you would need - a safe, iron and ironing board, bath robes, flip flops, range of teas and coffees and a great selection of toiletries and other little items. The room overlooked the pool but I didn’t find it noisy whatsoever. My parents stayed in the Rasa Wing which they couldn’t fault either. The staff here are exceptional, so kind and polite and really couldn’t do enough for you and were the epitome of Malaysian hospitality. Special thank you to our housekeeper, Rafique. We only had breakfast here which was out of this world, I couldn’t believe the vast selection. It was massive! Probably the best hotel breakfast I’ve ever seen. There’s a free shuttle bus that goes twice a day (10am and 14:40) into Georgetown (and returns twice a day also) but a Grab taxi is very cheap also. I would 100% return to this hotel and would absolutely recommend it.…

On arriving we noted how very busy the hotel was, we had apparently inadvertently arrived during school holidays. We were directed to our room in the garden wing, the room itself was clean, spacious and had lovely views of the gardens and main pool, even a glimpse of the ocean. The first thing we noticed was when sitting on our balcony it was very loud due to the amount of children using the pool. This is great if your a family with children but being an older couple not what we were hoping for. We also noted that the bar fridge was not particularly cold as it is in fact only a chiller not a fridge as stated in hotel information. One other small niggle was the TV picture was very bad, we don’t watch this a great deal but should we decide to watch the news did not favour an intermittent picture. We drew these issues to the hotel and they endeavoured to rectify the issues. However as the hotel was at capacity we’re not able to offer an immediate solution but advised that as soon as a room became available in the Rasa wing they would offer this to us at a minimum charge. It didn’t take long! The hotel Manager “David” called our room less than 48 hours later and offered a suite in the Rasa wing! This was greatly appreciated and more the type of holiday we are accustomed too, adult only pool and dining area with impeccable guest service. The remainder of our weeks stay was thoroughly enjoyable with some of the best customer service from staff that we have encountered. All of the dining areas were wonderful with an exceptional high standard and quality of food. The afternoon teas and evening canapés were incredible. We have never in the past visited a Shangri-La hotel but due to the amazing service we received during our stay will now definitely seek them out elsewhere. My wife and I have just returned home from an 8-night stay at the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang. Very happy with everything about the resort - the gardens, the view out to the sea, breakfast options, daily high tea at 3pm and then cocktails at 5pm. All the staff were helpful and welcoming. The resort is in an area with some facilities, and it was good to be able to walk to a nearby pharmacy. Easy to get into Georgetown. I'd suggest don't worry about the shuttle between the resort and the Jen Hotel in Georgetown - either use a taxi (approx 55 MYR each way) or even more convenient, hire a taxi by the hour - 40 MYR per hour with a 4 hour minimum. In Australian currency that is an inexpensive option. Next time I'll make sure I have Grab installed and organise a local sim card. The highlight was having a drink and desert one evening at the Pinang Bar - outside near the beach and great singing / music.…

I’ve read lots of reviews containing the recommendation of the Rasa Wing. I’m sure it’s lovely but we found the Garden Wing just fabulous. Our sea view room was wonderfully spacious and so well appointed and we enjoyed the closer location to both the main pool and the Spice Market cafe. Service here is absolutely superb from the front of house to the house keeping to the restaurant staff. I can only rate them all as excellent and so friendly yet professional. We have had a truly memorable stay and will definitely be back.

One of Penang island oldest hotel. The brand itself is good enough to book and comfort is assured. The pool is great and sun bath is a must. Umbrella and chair is sufficient during low season. Easy access to food store surrounding.

Was great to be back after having holiday cancelled due to Covid. Was worried that it would not be the same as previous but apart from some staff changes and a shorter cocktail session (used to be from 5 till 7 but now 5.30 till 7) pleased to say that it was the same. Lovely to see Muru, Mohammed, Catherine and other staff in the Grill were still there. Sasi in the lounge was amazing and used to make the time there special The only fault that we could find was the lack of senior management being around whereas previously they would always be there and introduce themselves and generally make time to chat and check that everything was ok

This was our 2nd stay at the hotel following a trip here in 2019. The hotel was then and remains now our favourite ever resort hotel. Staff are wonderful and we were looked after so well, simply faultless. We upgraded to a Junior Rasa wing suite so once again we had afternoon tea and drinks with canapés later in the afternoon. The hotel does this so well, it is such a lovely atmosphere and definitely adds something special to the stay. Our room was lovely and immaculately cleaned, we were on the 1st floor which meant we didn't have much of a view which was a pity as I had requested a room on a high floor. Grounds are vast and well maintained straight onto the beach, there is always a bit of space for some quiet time. Breakfast was amazing as we could use the Feringgi grill, absolutely lovely start to the day. Staff were attentive and friendly. Food is delicious. Overall we had a wonderful stay, we wouldn't think of staying anywhere else if we come back to Penang. The best hotel! …
