What a great place in Guanacaste. We are Marriott Bonvoy members and always enjoy the Autograph collection hotels and resorts. This was a great option for our beach part of the trip. I was apprehensive at first based on some of the negative reviews but I cannot say how happy we were with the very courteous staff, nicely manicured grounds, spacious rooms and good food. The location worked for us to be able to plan several day trips to Conchal beach, Rio Celeste and Ponderosa. The beach at the resort is the only negative as mentioned in other reviews but we didn’t mind driving ten minutes to hermosa beach or further down to playas del coco. We really enjoyed how the resort blends really well with nature. The water filling stations throughout the resort are great way to help guests reduce single plastic use. The staff again is also a great value add for this resort. Eliezer at valet and Daniel at Matiss are just a couple of over a dozen great staff members we encountered during our stay. The spas is great as well and has reasonable prices. My wife was 15 minutes late to her appointment and they still honored the entire 2 hour treatment even though they didn’t have to. We called every morning on our way out to request housekeeping service at a specific time and every time we came back the room was already made. Turn down service everyday along with freshly baked cookies was always appreciated. I think there is a lot of emphasis now on customer service given the residential project at El Mangroove. Well, I’ll I can say is great work on really focusing on the little things (water stations, turn down service, cookies, kids playground, ample kid pools, etc) that really help accommodate the adult travelers as well as families. Great job and we’ll certainly be back!

El Mangroove continues as one of my favorite hotels in the world, this was my third visit. The experienced staff - particular compliments to Adrian running the valet/bell stand and Fabian at the water sports kiosk - always impress. The staff is relaxed because they know you’re on vacation, professional, anticipate guests’ needs (an umbrella placed in the car if rain is forecast) and clearly love their property. The staff pointed out the improvements since I was here last year - USB-A and USB-C plugs by the bed, plus modernized temperature control panels. It’s excellent to see that the Owners/Management continue to invest in their property,
The rooms and pools are always gorgeous, comfortable and meticulously clean, I love the chocolate-sand beach with lots of natural tree shade, gentle waves and beautiful views of Culebra Bay. The food is excellent and moderately-priced for a gorgeous 5 star hotel. Because it’s boutique size (under 100 rooms), you’re always known to the staff, no competing for lounge chairs and at peace. Look forward to seeing my El Mangroove amigos next year, pura vida mis amigos

We took a 10 year anniversary trip booking a honeymoon package for 4 nights. Overall was a great stay but a few things to mention:
1. Service was overall great but somewhat inconsistent at times (pool service, room cleaning) but everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. If booking a special package, be sure to confirm at check-in and how to book certain items as there was limited communication in advance and some items ( spa services, cabana) may be booked up in advance. Absolutely take advantage of the $5-15 shuttles that can take you to Hacienda Blue or near by beaches
2. All beaches in Costa Rica are public and this hotel has no exception. There are security officers monitoring but everyone was nice and enjoying the beach. Would recommended to rent bikes to use the bike trail ( staying right from the hotel) to explore more of the private beach areas. Other resorts such as Andaz and Four Seasons appear to be further on the peninsula and have a more private beach areas. However, the pool is more of our thing and it was wonderful.
3. The food was overall good but would recommend at least one dinner at Hacienda Blu for sushi/ seafood off property
4. The real STAR was the sunset cruise with Azul arranged through the hotel to which we saw an amazing sunset, dolphins and explored the Gulf. Esteban and Paolo were fun, professional and knew how to make a 2 hours cruise exceptional in every moment!

Dear Libby J, Thank you for choosing El Mangroove to celebrate your 10-year anniversary and for taking the time to share your thoughtful feedback. I’m delighted to hear that your overall experience was enjoyable, and I appreciate your insights as they help us continue to refine and enhance our services. I’m pleased to know you found our team friendly and helpful throughout your stay. I apologize, however, for any inconsistencies you experienced with pool service and room cleaning. I’ll be reviewing this with our team to ensure we provide a consistently excellent experience for all our guests. I also appreciate your suggestions regarding special package bookings. Clear communication is key, and I regret that some of the items included in your package, such as spa services and cabanas, were not better coordinated. We will work on improving the pre-arrival and check-in experience to ensure our guests feel fully informed and able to take advantage of every detail of their package. Your comments about the beach and biking trails are very helpful, and I’m glad you took the opportunity to explore the area and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. It’s wonderful to hear the pool met your expectations as well. Regarding dining, I’m happy you enjoyed the food on property and were able to experience Hacienda Blu for a special meal. We strive to offer a variety of dining options, and it’s great to see you explored some local recommendations. The highlight of your feedback, of course, is the Azul sunset cruise! Esteban and Paolo are truly exceptional, and I’m thrilled they made the experience so memorable for you. I’ll be sure to share your kind words with them—they’ll be delighted to know they contributed to such a special part of your trip. Once again, thank you for celebrating such a milestone with us and for your thoughtful feedback. If there’s anything we can do to assist with future plans or if you’d like to return to El Mangroove, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’d be honored to welcome you back for another unforgettable experience. Warm regards, Antonio Cubillo Guest Relations Manager El Mangroove Hotel

This was my second stay at El Mangroove, and I found it a bit disappointing on both occasions. For the price of this hotel, I would expect the beach that it fronts to be nicer, but the beach is very "meh" (not the kind of beach with soft sand that one would want to relax on, and there are sand fleas). When I was here in 2018 there were many dead fish along the beach, also. The pools are nice, though enforcement of keeping kids and teens out of the "adults only" pool was very lax, which made the experience less serene. The food is OK but nothing thrilling, and the dining areas are mostly open air with quite a lot of biting insects. The renovated rooms are nice and spacious, but laid out in an odd way, with hammocks indoors in some rooms in an odd location, no line or place to hang wet swimsuits to dry, and other odd design choices. The gym is tiny and in an outbuilding that is very poorly air conditioned so it is quite hot.

So this was our last stop over while visiting Costa Rica for last 2 days of our trip. Overall our experience was very nice. Warm welcome upon arrival greeted and helpful front desk check in. The grounds were lovely, pool area was very nice and kept clean, very good service by the pool staff. The beach area was OK. Not as nice as our two previous locations. There were no waves since it is located in a bay area and there were a ton of boats in the water that were not terrific to look at. The hotel was pretty empty so I’m not sure what it would be like if it was at or near capacity for service. although the staff was incredibly attentive, it almost bordered on too much maybe because they were bored? It seems like every 15 minutes someone would be coming by and asking you if you want a drink or needed some thing. After staying at two other locations, this hotel seemed overpriced. There was no breakfast included not even a light Buffet. So we ordered room service for breakfast and it was just OK and they did not get our order correct. if you eat on resort it is expensive and a light selection for lunch at only one of the restaurants. We did not eat on resort for dinner we went to the town of playa Coco. Two slight negatives would be …we asked for our car to be ready for us the night before for an early flight and it was not. (They have valet parking which we didn’t feel necessary but they only had that option). They suggested we schedule a specific time for housekeeping which we did for 11 AM and we went back to our room at 3 o’clock and housekeeping was in the room cleaning. Again not a big deal but why request a specific time if they’re going to show up for hours later? The room was nice, no view, not sure any of the rooms even had a view of the ocean which was disappointing because we stayed in our two other locations and had amazing views for less money. there was a separate living room that was not air-conditioned and had a hammock in it which was very unsteady. The bedroom was closed off with a sliding glass door which was air-conditioned. we have not stayed with this company before but after staying there, nothing against the grounds or the pleasant staff, we just would not stay again felt it was overpriced for what you get.

Deep in the heart of Costa Rica! This was our second trip to Costa Rica and a very different experience than the last, which was more eco-touristy. My relatives organized this trip and it was in the Pacific ocean side of the country, on the beach. The resort is one of Marriott's higher group of properties, the Autograph collection, so plan on spending more per night than in the center of the country or in the city. The large bay where we were afforded a calm beach for swimming, but even nicer beaches were only a short Uber ride away. The suites were perfect and the resort was nestled into the mangrove area foliage very artistically. Pablo, the concierge, treated our group and everyone else on the property like family. He made sure that the service everywhere on-site was perfect, from the restaurants (3) to the pools (4) to any needed tours.

Our stay was overall a 3 out of 5. As loyal members, we were upgraded to a nicer room, which was appreciated. The property itself is modern and visually appealing, but several key issues impacted our experience.
The biggest disappointment was the beach. Unfortunately, the beach conditions were unacceptable. Locals bring their dogs, which often results in messes on the beach, and smoking was prevalent. This made it hard to enjoy the beach area, which is typically a key part of any coastal stay.
The service was generally good, but there were a few misses. For example, I tried to book a coffee tasting experience on the same day, only to be told there were just eight seats available per day for the entire hotel. This felt poorly managed—why promote an experience that’s nearly impossible to book?
Additionally, there are extra charges for almost everything. Even takeout orders incur a mandatory 10% service fee plus 13% tax. Unfortunately, the room service food was another letdown. We tried various items like pizza, fries, and brownies, but none were edible.
On the positive side, the hotel was not overcrowded, so there was always someone available to assist with questions. Towels were readily available, sunblock was provided throughout the property, and free yoga classes were offered on certain days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), which was a nice touch.
However, due to the poor beach conditions and the fact that it’s frequented by locals with their dogs, I wouldn’t recommend this property. For us, the beach experience was unpleasant and detracted significantly from our stay.

Dear Diannchik, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent stay at El Mangroove Hotel. We sincerely appreciate your candid remarks, as they help us identify areas for improvement and enhance the guest experience. First, I want to thank you for recognizing our efforts to provide loyal members with an upgraded room and for highlighting the modern appeal of our property. I’m glad to hear that certain aspects, such as the availability of staff, towels, sunblock stations, and complimentary yoga classes, added value to your stay. However, I’m truly sorry to learn that several aspects of your visit did not meet your expectations, particularly regarding the beach. Please allow me to address this: all beaches in Costa Rica are public by law, and while we strive to maintain the cleanliness and safety of the area immediately in front of our property, the public nature of the beach poses challenges that are beyond our control. Your feedback regarding local activities, smoking, and pet waste is invaluable, and we will continue working with the local community to promote cleanliness and a respectful environment for all visitors. I also apologize for your disappointment with the availability of the coffee tasting experience. We understand how frustrating it can be when activities are unavailable, and we will reevaluate our communication and scheduling to ensure better clarity and access for all guests in the future. Regarding the dining experience, I’m deeply sorry that the room service food did not meet your expectations and that the additional service charges detracted from your overall satisfaction. I have shared your comments with our culinary team to ensure a thorough review of the items you mentioned, with the goal of improving quality and consistency. Your constructive feedback is truly appreciated, and while I regret that we fell short in providing you with the exceptional beach experience you were expecting, I hope you will give us another opportunity to demonstrate the quality of service and care for which we strive. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly at [your email] should you have any further concerns or should your travels bring you back to Guanacaste. We would be delighted to assist you in creating a more enjoyable experience. Warm regards, Antonio Cubillo Guest Relations Manager El Mangroove Hotel

El Mangroove is a nice resort! I visited with my two kids, 14 and 12, for two days.
Pros: Free snorkel and bike rental. Food is decent not overpriced. Breakfast was the best meal for us. Room service offers the best value for food, especially the kids menu. The swimming area at the beach is very nice with calm water and a sandy bottom. Staff is very helpful. Sunsets are amazing. Rooms are nice!
Cons: Pools are very shallow and kept too warm. The food, while not expensive, is just ok. Breakfast and room service are a great value, but the restaurant food for lunch and dinner is mediocre.
Color: We had a good experience overall. We had a one bedroom king suite jungle view room, upgraded from a two queen room. Rollaway bed was provided for free and was comfortable. Climate control in the room was great. Double rainfall shower room was awesome. Bed was comfortable.
We ate three meals on property, one at matiss, one at mall, and one room service. The room service food was better than the food at the restaurants, and more reasonably priced. The breakfast buffet was great (they also had a la carte items which we did not get), with a lot of options, an egg station and good coffee. We rode bikes on the beach to the restaurant hacienda blu which had VERY good food at prices comparable to El Mangroove. If you do this, order the whole fish. The ride was about 15 minutes. Note that you can only do this ride on the beach at lower tide times, and when the tide is low, you will need to use the road.
We went snorkeling near the rocks that are about a 10 minute walk along the beach to the right as you face the water. We saw octopus, sea urchins, puffer fish, and several other smaller fish.
We saw a good amount of wildlife on the property. Lots of birds, butterflies, iguanas, crabs, lizards, and amazing leaf cutter ants!
There were a few minor issues with our stay - our room phone stopped working while I was placing a room service order, so I had to walk to the concierge to order room service, and then it took over an hour to come when we were promised half an hour, and finally the burger customizations for my son's burger were not done, so he could not eat the burger, but the room service food was the best of the non breakfast meals.
The sunset on our second night was spectacular.
I would stay at this resort again for 2-3 days if I came back, leaning heavily on room service and off property restaurants for food. The free activities, swimming area at the beach, nice rooms, good service, and incredible sunset make it a keeper.

Lots to like about this property but the ending took it from 5 stars to 1 stars.
The person when checking us in said it would be only 5 to 10 US dollars for a ride to the Secrets our next stay. Secrets is a 4 minute drive or 1.8 kilometers. Not far.
When checking out they said it would be $85 US dollars for that 4 minute 1 way ride. This was a ride for just my wife and I. After 15 minutes of seeing what the hotel would do, they would lower it to $35 dollars. On sheer principle we decided to do the 25 minute walk vs being extorted. To make matters worse they added Mini Bar charges to the bill that we didn't utilize.
I'm a simple traveler that would give almost any Marriott stays 5 stars. I caution travelers staying at this hotel. Nice property but has elements of being shady.

Thank you kindly for your rating and review Troy H, I appreciate your could-be 5-star review and I apologize for the unfortunate check out process. In regards to transportation, we have 2 vans at the property. Taxi’s and UBER are available as well. Reservations are required to book this type of services. If a guest doesn’t reserve, it will be subject to availability at the moment. The $10 ride was offered through our vans’ service, but you didn’t reserve. When the service was requested upon your check out, both my vans were away at the airport picking other guests that did reserve. You were then, offered the fee that others charge. Those fees are not in my control. We tried to help the best we could with the information and resources we had available in that moment. I would definitely recommend my guests to book services in advance, especially during the high season in Costa Rica from December to April to avoid these type of issues. Thank you for having chosen El Mangroove for your recent stay and I hope to have the opportunity to host you again in a near future.

The hotel offers modern and stylish rooms, we truly love the serene atmosphere, exceptional service, and delicious dining options. The infinity pool and direct beach access are highlights, while activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, and spa treatments add to the experience!!!!!
The boat trip through Palo Verde with Issys Tours was exceptional, our guide knew exactly where to see the wildlife, and we saw many animals up close. Lunch was delicious, and the whole day was perfectly planned. It’s a must-see in Costa Rica for nature lovers!
Also we booked our transfer from Liberia Airport to the Mangroove Hotel it was seamless. The driver was not only prompt but also gave us helpful tips about the area. I can consider it as a stress-free start to our vacation!

Hello,
Thank you for considering El Mangroove Hotel for your upcoming Thanksgiving holidays! I’d be happy to provide more details to help with your decision.
1. **Local Beach Waters**: Playa Panamá, where El Mangroove is located, offers beautiful, calm waters due to the sheltered cove. While the water is not as clear as you might find in the Caribbean, it is still clean and pleasant, ideal for swimming or relaxing by the shore.
2. **Pristine Quality**: The beach here features black sand due to its volcanic origins, which gives it a unique and exotic feel. While it differs from the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, Playa Panamá’s tranquil ambiance and soft waves make it a lovely spot for families.
3. **Sea Adventures for Families**: For a family of four, we recommend trying out snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking—these are all available right from the beach. You can also take a boat tour to nearby islands for dolphin watching or go on a sunset cruise, which is a great way to enjoy the scenic views.
4. **Food & Drink Quality**: El Mangroove is known for its high-quality dining experiences, with two on-site restaurants—Makoko and Matiss. The menus emphasize fresh, local ingredients with a mix of international and Costa Rican flavors. The cocktails and drinks are top-notch as well, perfect for unwinding by the pool or beach.
5. **Attractive Sites Nearby**: Within a short distance from the hotel, you can explore Playa Hermosa or Playa del Coco, both of which are less than a 15-minute drive. These areas offer more beaches, shops, and dining options. For those interested in a bit of adventure, hiking trails and zip-lining are also nearby, although a bit further than a 1-hour drive.
For your excursions, we recommend booking through the hotel’s concierge. They can arrange **kayak** and **snorkeling** tours with trusted operators to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

El Mangroove Hotel
Hi there, surfing, snorkeling, and paddling through the mangroves can all be arranged at the resort with their local team. If it is not off the shore then they will take you out to the nearby island (sorry I forget the name), they have two boats for guests.
The beach is public (as are most in CR) and there are other vendors there, but you know those come with their own risk.
There's also Santa Rosa National Park nearby, you can surf or dive there, not 100% sure about snorkeling though, sorry.
There are more places to choose from in the Playa Panama area.
