Very nice and comfortable place.. resort manager made our stay even better. He was very friendly and very attentive to our request. Overall our stay was good. The food was great. You can preorder fresh seafood to be cook by their crew at a reasonable price.
Note to all if you like spicy food bring your own chili. They have it here but it’s limited.

It is very nice place, located 15 mins from the mainland. The sea water is very clean and clear! We had so much fun playing with the fishes in the aquarium. There is a nemo too! The snorkelling trip was so fantastic! The staff brought me along to snorkel with the turtle in Mabul Island! My first time see a turtle in live and it was incredibly big! There were quite many Chinese tourists at the resort. Overall it was superb!

We booked a 4d/3n package online with RM700/pax,flight from KL to Tawau airport with airasia, booked a van from tawau to semporna(singamta office).its about 90km from airport to semporna town, take about an hour to reach.
Everything is good, nice view, small but comfy room with aircond(with sharing bath room),food not great but ok,good snorkeling experience, verry helpful and friendy staff,a verry joyful trip for me.will comeback again someday.
The only big downside is,the staff (a woman) in the office dosent treat us like guest at all...really unpolite!

Shame on Singamata Adventures and their diving operations, when I went diving with them they picked up a turtle and passed him around for all the customers to feel.. They also picked up puffer fishes and blowing them up on the surface aswell as Nemo fishes..

Feels like an unacceptable behaviur and I hope that you will be shut down!

Pros: tranquil setting, no mosquitos, diving northern Sabah islands and Mabul without paying Sipadan prices
Cons: just about everything else

Booking/Getting there: the manager failed to comprehend/answer questions posed regarding transfer, night dives, buddy diving on the house reef etc, making 24 e-mails over several weeks necessary to nail down details and complete a booking. The arrival schedule is very rigid and does not correspond with flights to Tawau, essentially forcing all guests to spend a night in bed-bug-ridden Semporna before taking the boat to the resort. You will leave the Semporna office at 08:00 (if they are on time) and have a maximum of 15 min to unpack your gear and get it on the dive boat, which leaves at 08:30.

Diving: each day, Singamata (like all other resorts in the area) must apply for permits to specific marine parks for each diver. Each morning, it seems to be a huge surprise and the divers, already geared up, must wait in the dive center for the permits to clear - for up to two hours! Other resorts in the area are magically able to organize permits on the previous morning, allowing their dive schedules to run like clockwork. (Singamata does not get permits for Sipadan, and this drives down the prices considerably). Divemaster Ryan was very knowledgeable and professional and is highly recommended.

Connectivity: the place does officially have WiFi, though only in the restaurant, and sometimes you can even connect to it, which does not mean that any traffic is possible. Upon attempting to fix the router, we encountered a notification that the maximum download limit (6GB) had been exceeded for the account. After much discussion, another 1 GB was purchased, which was gone within hours.

Accommodation: the shared toilets/showers are filthy, don't flush, and there is no soap for hand washing afterwards. Shower water is either scalding, freezing, or nonexistent. Each room is equipped with electricity and an A/C unit, the fuse for which blows daily and nightly should all rooms actually attempt to *use the A/C. Electricity is turned off during the day.

The food: acceptable, nothing to write home about. Two kinds of vegetables and a fruit are served at dinner in addition to lots of fish and fried items, seems to cater to the (almost exclusively) Chinese guests. Breakfast is cold and there is no fruit.

If you are EXTREMELY low-maintenance and patient and want to dive the islands north of Sabah for a pittance, stay here.

My experience at Singamata was largely underwhelming – and I arrived fully expecting budget accommodation. I visited with my boyfriend and spent 3 nights in a deluxe room, hoping to recover from our climb of Mt Kinabalu directly beforehand. The location was fantastic for relaxing, with plenty of hammocks scattered around the boardwalks and stairs directly into the ocean for snorkeling. The island snorkeling trips are also fun (more later), though not the best value. However that’s pretty much all this place has going for it.

The accommodations even in the deluxe room were incredibly basic, cramped and not good value for the price, especially in Asia. The double bed was tiny and old, the only other furniture in the room was a little old desk in the corner, and the bathroom was basically a “wet room” that emptied into the ocean – about 10m from where we set off for our intro dive. Keep that in mind when snorkeling around the hotel! The electricity is turned off during the day, so there are no fans to lounge under on a hot day. We still enjoyed hopping between hammocks and the water to cool off, which is lucky because if you’re not diving, there’s not much else to do.

Be prepared to have the office staff try to sell you on diving programs when you check in, even when you don’t have enough time. (Remember to consider your arrival and departure flights – and if you’ve just climbed Kinabalu, you probably WILL be a bit sore.) There was also some waiting around to take the boat out to the hotel, as mentioned by other reviewers. We ended up being the only guests on a boat otherwise full of staff who seemed to show up late. Use any wait time to walk into town and stock up on snacks and any alcohol you fancy – once you’re at the hotel, there’s not much available.

Food was a fairly bland and repetitive spread. We aren’t fussy foodies but we enjoy exploring other cuisines and felt that we had that opportunity wasted for the 4 days we were there – and being stuck out on the reef you have no other food options. Since I can’t eat fish there were several meals where I basically ate rice and fruit, which might be fine for some but frustrated me that fabulous Asian food was available literally just on the horizon each evening.

There seemed to be about 6 guests total during our stay, but many employees who sat around and watched us. We tried to engage in friendly smiles and quick chats at first, then gave up and just felt creeped out by the end of our stay.

Feeling stir-crazy after 2 days, we did a day trip to a nearby island to snorkel. This was the highlight of our stay, and definitely worth doing if you’re not diving. The island was gorgeous, the staff brought a simple lunch along, our guide actually had a sense of humour and he was great at taking us to specific places he obviously knew were haunts for sea turtles and big fish. It was a relief to have a change of scenery!

All in all, stay here if you’re part of a larger, younger group on a tight budget and you’re planning to spend all day diving. For anyone else, I’d recommend spending only a little bit more to stay elsewhere, where you’ll get much more bang for your buck.

Don´t book the absolutley overpriced backpackers lodge. The crew in the Hotel is very nice and they have a lovley pool with nice game. But that´s all unfortunatly, the Chinese Manager is a mess, she regulates everything and try´s to rip off everybody. The rooms are absolutly overpriced for that value. You don´t have walls and you hear everything from the other rooms, the towels are old and dirty...Bathroom is connected with the other bathroom so you know hear exacty what kind of "job" they are doing. During the day they switch off the electricity!!!! until 5pm. You have always the same food, and the taste is a mess.
If you book the snorkling package they drop you at one spot for the whole day and than they bring you back.
If you book the diving package it´s a good value ad, but the problem is the Chinese Dive Instructor, because he fails more than 50%, that happened when we have been there. Never heared something like that before!!!
They don´t spend the money to bring you to the spot where you see the big game.
There are a lot of good resorts around where you see the big fish in nature and not only in your pool.

The food was disgusting.the. Rooms basic.not worth the money. Beware of them pushing you into a diving package if there is not really enough time to do so ........ Dangerous.unfriendly staff.we ended. Up cutting our losses and went to big Johns home stay on Marbul and it was fantastic

Response from Alexharker, Guest Relations Manager at Singamata Adventures Semporna
Responded 3 Feb 2012
We are really sorry that did not have a good experience at Singamata. We work hard to ensure our customers are happy. Ours is a budget accommodation and this does mean that most rooms are shared bathrooms. We also work hard to ensure that our guests have a great experience while diving the reefs in the area. We will look into this issue further and try and ensure that future guests don't have a similar experience.

we stayed for a 2 day, 3 night package, the place is very nice until we entered our room, which was very basic and the shared bathrooms were disgusting.
Apart from that we could not get an upgrade (even we were willing to pay huge amount of money) because the staff at the reception couldnt just not handle something like an "unpredictable change of the package" and after ignoring us and bringing up excuses and running away they just told us in the end those expensive huts are booked out, which was defin. not true as we passed them every day a few times and the doors were open and room empty, also no guests arrived, as we just had about 20 people staying there, so just unbelievable not helpful at all. the diveinstuctors were very nice and helpful, but we still left a day earlier because we just felt uncomfortable.
