I hesitated for a while to write this review because I selfishly wanted to keep this place as much of a secret as possible. Imagine an unspoilt, white beach paradise island, unlimited diving as part of the price - in crystal clear waters with marine life you rarely see anywhere else. Great staff, always happy to help and an amazing atmosphere - it doesnt really feel like a resort - more your own home in paradise!

The rooms are clean, bright with comfortable beds and good air conditioning, the beach is pristine and get the most amazing sunsets. If you love diving, or just getting away from everything for a while then this is the place.

I have to say that if you are looking for ultimate luxury then the Pom Pom island resort (a short walk away and the only other resort on the island) is maybe a little more upmarket, but if you want a fabulous atmosphere, a great room and an idyllic piece of paradise, I cant speak highly enough about this place.

We spent 4 days here, one diver package on non-diver package.
This resort was not what I expected. Let´s start with the good:
The transport (pick up/dropp of) was well organized, the dive guides were very friendly, equipment and safety was excelent, the island is very beautifull etc, but in fact and now comes the disapointing thing which makes it all average:
The food was very disapointing, and sometimes not enough of everything for everybody, we expected more seafood, but usually we got meat. The breakfast was pretty much toast with peanut butter and some eggs and no fruits at all. The resort does not sell fruit juices or cocktails, just softdrinks and beer. The accomodation had only small windows to open, no fan no moskito net. The reason why we go to an island is to have a fresh sea breeze at night, but because of the lack of bigger windows and a fan we had to switch on the aircon and so we missed the fresh air....
The accomodation is clean and yes faces the sea, but some of the huts from far away! When we put our towels on the ground for getting new ones, we found out, that the cleaning staff just took the old ones and folded them again!!
At least the diving sides are o.k. You will see a lot of turtles for sure and lots of smaller stuff, but corals are rare at many spots because of bombing and bigger fish disapeared. All in one sentence: If you just want to dive and don´t care about luxury, food or drinks, you will be satisfied, but don´t go there if you partner want´s to spend the days without diving, the non-diving package is far to expensive...

I am glad that I start my diver's life by staying and taking the PADI Open Water course at the Celebes Beach Resort (CBR).

I have been struggled about the place which I should take my PADI course before going to Sipadan, one of the best dive spot as ranked by the Discovery. For those who intend to go diving at the Sipadan, they may either take the PADI course from those dive shops that are located at Semporna, the town which most divers depart for the Sipadan dives.

Since the PADI course is indeed intensive in nature, I decide not to take the course at the dive shops at Semporna because I believe I do need lots of rest after the daily course at a peaceful environment which a town can never offer.

By taking the course at CBR, this lovely island does help easing the tension from the course by the amazing and relaxing environment. Energy regain by the rich marine life during the dives so as the stunning sunset, starry nights.

PADI experience
The course is being conducted in small group, meaning you will be taken really good care by the instructors in terms of the techniques required, theory discussion, Q&A, etc. Since the course is conducted at the shallow water area right in front of the beach, time and energy is saved.

Rich marine life
The marine life under the water is awesome, both in shallow and deep water areas which usually won't take >10min swim from the beach. Sea turtles, giant trevally, so as all macro life are everywhere whenever you dive. I am impressed by the experience of seeing sea turtle laying eggs on the island. Just pick a full-moon night and walk around, mother turtles can be easily found.

Feels like home
I like the atmosphere at CBR most. Whenever after lunch/dinner time, guests from all over the world all rest and chat at the common area. This just feel like home~!

The diving was great although the dive boats need to be better maintained and made suitable for diving, did I mention the wharf collapsed the day before we got there... bare footed shore walking was a nightmare.

We arrived for lunch had a quick introduction to the key people and were promptly advise that they had wifi...but it was broken, a bit like everything else we were to find out. 23 scuba divers most of who enjoyed a cold beer at night, Oh wait lets put the warm beer at the front of the fridge and keep the cold beer cold.

It was OK for the manager…he had his own fridge and didn’t he get upset if you demanded what was available in his fridge but not available for the guest.

We complained about the water or lack there of every morning and by late afternoon we had water for a few more hours albeit salt water.

The tiles on my room floor were not sealed and made a noise every time you stood on one - try sneaking into a room with this...you even got an electric zap when you turned on the water occasionally - that kept us on our toes.

When the beer ran out with 2 days to go we were basically told that that was all they had, so we arranged for a delivery with one of the local dive guides who we found out later was abused by the manager for doing this...why the manager didn't arrange more beer no one will ever know - maybe it was a communications issue - so he claimed! Muppet! We had a native Malaysian in the group who you still ignored!

I don’t think the manager had any customer experience – well he may have had in China as he spoke only Chinese which certainly helped.

We were told that we could pay by credit card for anything we used or purchased however like the wifi – that was also broken so luckily most of us did bring some local currency to sort out our bills. Our tour leader was unable to pay for the trip but was another story I will leave for him….

I hate to say it but this could have been such a great trip had the resort manager bothered to assist or listen to the complaints we raised with the staff rather than spend all day in his office ignoring his guests.

My guess is that he could have had a great time if there were no guests to bother him.

I know 22 other people on this trip that all experienced the same issues and were not happy campers, and doubt very much that they will rate this place above terrible.

Thanks for the memories Celebes but I for one won’t be back.

Experience based 4 days stay in August 2016. Couple of experienced Asia travelers, between 30 and 40 years old, normally lodging in guesthouse, familiar and fine with cheap and easy accommodations. Non divers, just snorkeling.

Pier: destroyed by the sea storm long time ago and never fixed. Dangerous to climb, not protected by handrails. Not recommended for kids.

Room: bed is ok, bathroom and furniture are old, dirty and rusty. They both smell bad. Mirror is dark and rusty. Water is warm all the time, but sometimes not available in the entire village, when available is always salty and sometimes brown.

Food: repetitive, based mainly on rice, served 3 times per day at buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fruit is provided. Often fruit juices or coffee are not available. Water and tea bags are the only free drink available. Breakfast is Asian style (noodles, eggs, vegetables, ...), no milk or fruit jams or sweet pastries. Bread toaster available but randomly bread not present. Generally the food area is dirty and rusty.

Beach: the area immediately in front of the village is ok, the immediate surroundings, water and sand, are full of plastic rubbish, wooden stuff, car tires. Nobody seems interested in collect the trash and keep the swimming area clean.

Entertainment: not available

Staff: minority of them speaking English, dive/snorkeling staff kind and polite, ground staff often unwilling to serve. What is really missing is an overall management and coordination of the staff. The Chinese manager is walking around without any value added, unbelievably he smokes in the restaurant among guests during lunch and dinner time. Also other members of the staff smoking while serving customers.

Wifi: available but password is not given to the customers.

Conclusion: if interested in just eat, dive, sleep, then ok. If looking in a relaxing and mid luxury resort (as per pricing) then, not recommended.

I've stayed two times, and both times found this to be a beautiful place to stay. The resort is small and simple. Expect no frills or fancy rooms, but the rooms are comfortable and clean. There is wifi for those who need to stay in touch with the world. The price is very reasonable and divers can dive as often as they like each day as part of the package for divers. As a small resort it was easy to tailer activities and dives to individual needs. I did a refresher dive and found the instructor very patient and when I found it difficult I was able to take my time and work through things without rushing. The dive staff were all professional and keen to share their local knowledge. We took a walk around the island in less than an hour, and on one evening were able to quietly watch a green turtle dig her nest and lay eggs. There are also opportunities for volunteers to assist with TRACC (a coral reef conservation organization). There was plenty of time to chilax, with a comfy sitting area and lounge chairs along the beach. I highly reccomend CBR and the friendly staff who run it! See you again in August!

We came here on the suggestion of a Dive Master we met on the sea dragon liveaboard in Thailand .

I spoke to one of the owners Guido who sorted our booking out and gave us the low down on Pom Pom Island. We booked an Air Asia flight to Tawau where we were met by Lynden, Celebes driver, and more in a brand new mini bus we were transferred to a hotel in Semporna and taken for dinner by Guido. The next morning we were again collected by Guido and Lynden who drove us to the jetty were the resorts speedboat was waiting. After a 45 min journey we arrived on Pom Pom a tiny lil island amongst many others in this area of which only 3 have resorts it was simply as you would expect on a picture postcard white sand turquoise sea n palms.

This is NOT a 5 star luxury resort rather a real dive resort with good facilities and lmitless diving available all included in your price 3 boat dive each day and as many shore dives as your dive computer allows you

All the rooms are really lovelly, spacious, comfy with lovely beds, high level of cleanliness, AC and hot showers n 24hr electrity. There is a super helpful and lovely housekeeping staff of EnEn, MiMi, Roseta, Sars, and Asoy always on hand to keep you in drinks food and anything you need

I decided to do my rescue diver course which in truth was mere pennies more than my stay alone would have been!!!!

I could not have asked for better, my instructor Nural was an absolute gem a fantastic teacher, and someone with a genuine love of diving, her job, and perhaps most of all teaching; my course passed like it was hours not days

So much so that we both decided to stay and do our DiveMaster from the bottom of my heart it was the BEST bit of the whole trip 3 weeks of hard work that felt like 3 weeks of fun with good friends - and I can guarantee if youre keen to learn and wanna do this Nural will teach you far beyond the content of the manuals, she is an endles source of information and help and if she cant answer a Q she will research or talk to her connections and find out for you. Nothing was too much trouble and we learnt the course n twice as much besides be it boat and sea knowledge photography advice local knowledge you name it we covered it .

Stayed over 5 weeks and made a friend from our tutor, gained a Pro qualification, had amazing dives, a beach paradise and total peace and quiet when you wanted it be warned tho this really is a desert island NO shops bars clubs or spa its the simple life just sea sun amazing diving and good good people

A special thanks again to Nural , tutor, mentor font of marine knowledge and now I think safe to say good friend

More turtles than you could wish for, nesting every evening and lots of males and females resting in the water during the day. My children saw more than 12 turtles on one snorkel trip. Great drift dives and muck dives, this place has enough variety and interest for all types of divers. The very short walk to the reef was great for sunset and night dives. This is not a 5 star resort but is leagues above most 2 & 3 star resorts.

Celebes Beach Resort can be summed up in one word - flawless. Based on the cutely named island of Pom Pom, only 45 mins from the jetty in Semporna, it is truly a hidden jem. From start to finish, my holiday ran like a dream.

The resort is owned and run by two of the friendliest and enthusiastic divers I've met in a long time - Nurul and Guido. Whereas some dive operations can be a bit hit and miss because the people who run it are first and foremost divers with no business acumen, this is emphatically not the case with Celebes. Nurul particularly has an international business background and it shines through in that the resort is exceptionally well-run and gives what I would say is a 5 star service.

Almost before I was off the boat arriving, I was back on it again and going for my first dive. I'd told Nurul I was really into macro and wanting to get to grips with my newish hobby of underwater photography. Within a few minutes she'd given me tips on settings for the camera which suddenly made everything a hundred times easier and I was in my element, pottering around the reef while Nurul pointed out the amazing macro life.

During my whole stay I was never asked to dive with people who didn't also have cameras and most of the time it was just me and Nurul. Her eye for finding macro is excellent so by the end of the trip I'd got a whole array of nudis, scorpionfish, stonefish, leaf fish, cuttle fish, squid, shrimps, crabs (including the elusive orangutan), mandarinfish and much, much more. Quite possibly while we had our heads stuck under rocks, there were innumerable swim by's of the big stuff (eagle rays and the like) but my mission was macro and I wasn't disappointed. The resort does have access to permits for Sipadan so if you want to dive this site they can easily organise it for you.

The thing about Celebes Beach Resort which did it for me (and I think another reviewer has mentioned it too) is the friendliness of the place. It just has that vibe that you can't put your finger on but you know you instantly feel at home and comfortable. Everyone there was having a genuinely wonderful time, no one wanted to leave.

While I was there I saw a family with young children, some couples, single people, divers and non-divers, all having a completely wonderful holiday at this resort. There was even a highly complicated, surprise proposal which the would-be groom orchestrated with the staff who couldn't have been more helpful (she said yes btw :)

Whatever the guys are doing at Celebes Beach Resort, they need to keep on doing it. Because it really, really works. Well done and I'll defintely be back next year.

I Usually refrain from Posting complete slam jobs however the week myself and my group of travelers had experienced I feel it is warranted,
while we were sent photos of a lovely resort with warning of speratic wifi we came accepting these facts,
the truth be told upon arrival we were told their pier has fallen down the day before in bad weather (ok this seems acceptable except when we inspected it later it appears to have been collapsed for quite some time, and the fact they actually don't even have a pier it belongs to the neighbouring properties leaving the entries and exits of the boats at low tide via water entry.)
The Showers were alt water based so you never could get really clean again this would be fine except the water pumps broke every day for 5 days, (able to have 2 showers in the entire time) Toilets couldnt flush without this water, your rooms are suplied with 4 bottles of drinking water a day... except they were only refreshed once, so you were forced into buying bottles from them if you wanted some fresh cold water. (there was a filtered water unit but when there is 23 of you there isnt much to go round)

Power shuts off 4 times a day and you must manually reset the air conditioner. (beware this power fluctuations can kill your electrical devices.)

when guests ran out of toilet paper and they requested more the manager would just tell them it would be put in tomorrow (14hours later)

our room was an unfinished room with mold on the wall, no door for the toilet, a ticking door on the shower and no tiles glued down all while missing all the edge tiles. made it quite noisy to walk on.

Ill move onto the stall, the best staff out there were the dive instructors Ali and Karl... bad news is thy are actually freelancers and aren't employed by the resort. Rose who worked at the resort was lovely and friendly even with her limited english, so I am sorry to rose for her having to be lumped in with this.

Wifi we were told on arrival that it was not operational but as the week went on we found out that it actually did work just the manager would not give out the password, (why would you lie to clients?) when complaints were brought forward to the manager and booking agent they blamed a language barrier as the main issue, however we had native speaking malay with our group who would be the central point of contact when we couldnt relay the issues effectively.

with 2nights to go the resort ran out of alcohol and told us it probably wont be refilled untill after we left, out malay speaker spoke directly with the manager then in native tounge about it and recieved a rude attitude telling her to come to him instead of politely coming over when she asked to speak to the manager.

onto the dangers of the resort:
in the time we were there my dive buddies swapped dive equipment 4 times for leaking hoses, mouth pieces and inflators, on girl had an entire first stage fail at 15m shutting off all her air, fortunately 90% of the divers on the trip had 50-1000 dives under their belt) but afterwards there was no checking of the gear or getting in to see how many of their its were broke (but from what I saw the answer is all of it)
People complained to the resort of getting electric shocks from the water in their taps and shower, as a result nothing was done about it and they would shower in other peoples rooms as a result (room 8 if you're wondering )
there is also bare wiring and a 3phase terminal near a clothes line at one of the back units that is just ripe for small children to go touch (note: YOU WILL DIE IF YOU TOUCH THEM)

Boats broke down,

Food was lovely but as the meals were set time there was a long space wherre there was no snacks other, than a small packet of tea biscuts, nothing available for purchase or to eat from 15:30(teatime) - 19:30 (dinner). Never enough food at tea time,

View was amazing, diving was great in the areas that haddn't been blown up by dynamite fishing.

in the end we had to source our own alcohol for the last night by private chartering their boat to bring the alcohol in. and the resort was just poorly run and organised with No communication to the guests.

If I am to return to Pom Pom I will be staying at the other resort or spending my time with T.R.A.C.C group rebuilding the reef. save your money and don't waste your time with this resort.
