Came here for a 4 night break with family, one of whom is partially sighted. The hotel is easy to find and in a good location, lovely gardens and really near the sea front and town and used to be a private home at one time so is not purpose built for sight impaired guests. There is some dark wood...

I stayed here for a week in early September 2016. Some of the staff and volunteers were lovely and helpful and the location excellent, but overall my stay painted a picture of disorganisation, chaos and unprofessionalism. I had to make several phone calls to different staff members to book my stay to begin with as they could not calculate if...

Thank you for your review. I did speak with you twice during your stay. I explained that there had been a medical emergency during the early hours of one of the nights you stayed at the hotel. Otherwise the only movement in the hotel overnight would be guests walking back to their rooms, or leaving their rooms on departure. During...

WOO! I love this place! Me and my family have been coming here every year since it opened and LOVE IT! WOO! The grounds are beautiful, the rooms are nice and the beds are comfy. We've made loads of friends here and visit at least twice a year (WOO!). The staff are super duper friendly and know exactly how to...

Just returned from staying the weekend with my dog at the Cliffden, this was my first time staying at this hotel and before I go any further "No" I am not visually impaired and was totally aware that this hotel is managed by a charity for the visually impaired, I checked it on Google before booking, the reason I chose...

We love this hotel and went back again this month, we enjoyed the lovely gardens which have a great sea view, the location is great and only a 5 minute walk into Teignmouth or there is a bus stop right outside. . We are always made to feel welcome and we weren't disappointed on this occasion, a special mention for...

Thank you for your review. Whilst we do offer some additional services at the Cliffden for blind and partially sighted guests, we welcome everyone whether visually impaired or not. The hotel nestles in 7 acres of mature gardens overlooking the promenade at Teignmouth. The ideal location for seaside lovers. I look forward to seeing you again in November.

Thank you for your review. I am slightly disturbed to read that you were uncomfortable with the number of visually impaired guests at the hotel. Blind or partially sighted people don't come with "helpers". I can only assume that you can be referring to hotel staff who would be performing the same duties as staff would do at every other...

This is a hotel which specialises in services for the visually impaired- which was not made clear when booking through an online site. It has beautiful grounds and a gate in the garden that leads straight onto the beach. It is also perfectly situated to the town centre, station and sea front. I heard that it was being sold and...

It did the job, i.e. a place to stay in South Devon while a few of us went to our friend's wedding up the road. It is a hotel for the visually impaired which was not clear at all when booking on an external website. Quite expensive for what we got. Rooms were quite messy, bathroom was alright although flooded...

Is a hotel for the visually impaired. This wasnt clear to me when I booked. Pool is nothing special and often closed. Grounds are spectacular. Breakfast was a major let down, 30min late and then a slab of thick cheddar and ham with wilted rugola (no bread). Staff were nice, kind and helpful. Rooms were very basic. Shower difficult to...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Cliffden Hotel was built as a private House in 1815 for Sir John Strachan on 35 acres of grounds adjacent to the Dawlish Road. The original gardens were built in the Regency style gardens, with smooth lawns, shrubberies and trelliswork and wall-plants against the lower storey of the house. In 1988, the then current owner Dr Mules retired, he put Cliffden House up for sale with the understanding that it would be used for "greater good". The House was purchased by Guide Dogs for the blind and converted to a hotel which offer accommodation to both blind, sighted and partially sighted guests. The hotel now sits in 7 acres of landscaped gardens, and a short walk through these private grounds brings you to the glorious seafront at Teignmouth. ... more   less
