Had food and a couple of drinks at the star inn last Saturday with friends. The cod and chips were freshly made and huge garden space abiding to social distancing rules. Excellent service and ever better food! Will definitely be visiting again soon.

A nice canal side pub with a lovely beer garden. We came on a Monday night: great food, friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere, a good mix of holidaymakers, families and locals. We had two cheese burgers which were delicious. Shout out to the nice barman who spoke to us as we were leaving 🏳️‍🌈

We ate twice here and wasn't disappointed.
Food is great & the service is excellent & the staff very friendly & welcoming.
Also they took social distancing seriously & explained their safety measures which they had put in place. This made you feel safe.
Will definitely return when in the area again next year.

Visited specially having read so many good revues however my meal was very disappointing.
Had booked for Sunday lunch and had reserved table in pokey corner of bar room. Many tables available for 'walk-ins' in airy bright front room. Ordered Beef roast. Eventually came, some parts extremely hot where others luke warm including the roast potatoes and the beef. Beef was machine sliced which gave impression of low key cafe style meal. Would not recommend food in this place. Try the White Hart next door.

We went into a pub that smelt fuggy, to be ignored by all waiters. We said we had a booking, after which we were placed on a dirty table next to open wires and curtain rails hanging off the walls. After smashing a glass and getting the drinks order wrong so we were charged £3 for a drink which should have been free, the barmaid apologised but said she couldn't fix it so we'd have to pay. The food took forever to come with the waiter slamming forks on the table before hand and was a real mixed bag. Some saying it was good and some had disastrous meals. The meat was ALL grissle in the pie. After paying we weren't said goodbye to on the way out. rude and a horrible experience which ruined my day.

The Star is a proper country pub, where all are welcome - walkers, cyclists, boaters and families. Dogs on leads are welcome too. It has the best selection of real ales for miles around and consistently wins CAMRA awards. The ales change constantly and may come from Welsh breweries or anywhere in the UK, always well kept, by the very enthusiastic landlord. The food is locally sourced, good pub grub, done well. The pies are lovely as is the fish and chips ,and the daily specials are interesting. The Star is not a gastro pub and doesn't pretend to be, but is deservedly popular for what it does.

Haven't been here for years but popped in whilst passing, we were happy to be told by the really lovely and very enthusiastic barman that Tuesday is 'Pie Night'!

The normal menu was also available but we were definitely sticking to pie... A never-ending chalk board of pies in fact - venison, steak & ale, lamb & damson, lamb & mint, wild mushroom... We went for the local game and the chicken leek & ham hock.

For officially the first time ever eating out, we were asked if we wanted short-crust or puff pastry. Impressive and when the pies came they were absolutely delicious with gorgeous fat, home-made chips.

What more can you want! Delicious home-made food, lovely people and a cracking selection of ales.. We wish it were our local!

Good food let down by dreadful service.
Travelled from carmarthen and Shrewsbury to visit this pub and apart from being able to take the dogs into the bar we could have had good food in a lot of other places.
The barman was not friendly or welcoming towards us and everything
appeared to be too much trouble for him.
They would not cook sausages for the dogs due to health and safety issues!

How they have had pub of the year so many times I do not know.

We had lunch here.. the food was good but there was quite a wait..

Some interesting notices about health and safety relating to use of the beer garden and heating up baby food... nice to see they take safety seriously ... however not enough it seems in regard to the fire exit by the gents toilet... if you go there see if it still has a bin partially blocking the exit door that is bolted at the bottom (although not locked).

There are surprisingly few pubs and restaurants in the Brecon area who welcome guests with dogs (more fool them!), but the Star is not one. Called in yesterday (21st Apr 2014) whilst passing. This is a popular and busy little pub in the heart of the village of Talybont On Usk and is right adjacent to the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal so it's location (at least on a nice day) is fabulous. However for us that proved its downfall. It's popularity (rightly so) meant the few staff were really busy and all doing several jobs-serving drinks, changing barrels, taking food orders, answering the phone, serving food and so on.
Being vegetarian the choices were quite limited and unexciting. We opted for the Cumberland burger and chips. It was just ok. I really believe in supporting small businesses at times like this but I also believe a customer deserves quality and on a score of 1 -10 I'd give their food 4. The burger was ok, didn't come with relish (as it said on the menu) and the chips were pre-cut not fresh. Unimaginative and very unexciting.
If your a beer buff this is one for you as their choice of guest ales was many.
Will I eat there again? Probably not
