This small hotel is the best for some do nothing days, to recharge your psychic batteries. Or, to enjoy water sports on the Douro River. Or, to explore the vineyards providing great port wines. Excellent breakfasts are served on the terrace overlooking the river and dazzling hillside scenery.
We ended up here during our trip in the early evening based on what we saw on a booking site and we had nowhere to stay. The welcoming is very pleasant at the reception and a glass of local port was offered as a welcome. We got a room on the 2nd floor, clean with a large bed (being 7ft and 6ft5) and a large bathroom (and high shower). Wifi reception in the room was not exactly good but I put that to being at the end of the hotel. Dinner was had in the restaurant, the menu was very simple and very local. The size however of the plates was good. Breakfast in the morning was good but it took some time to replenish the empties on the buffet.
Got a room outside the hotel with the windiest balcony, the cleaning was very bad. When we booked the room we couldn’t book with breakfast. The breakfast was expensive, 8 Euro per person. The pictures that the travelling agency had did not look the same as in real life, one resturant was under construction.
If you like bland and very basic food then choose the chef’s suggested local dishes. If you have to eat here I suggest you select more general simple meals but don’t raise your hopes too much. This 4 star hotel does not live up to its own hype or the expected standard. Very disappointing.
We arrived around 6pm and the restaurant was empty. After waiting during 15 min on the terrace, I decided to go inside to look for some staff. I finally found a lady in the hotel and told her that we are sitting on the terrace. A few minutes later, she came to us and we ordered 2 orange juices and asked her for the menu. She informed us that the restaurant was not open yet. It was not a problem for us, we could stay there to relax, have some drinks and enjoy the beautiful view in front of us and wait until the service will start. But the lady asked us to move from our table to go 3 meters on the same terrace to the part reserved for customers of the bar. We didn't understand why and explained to her that we preferred to stay at this table as we will eat there and the place she indicated was too hot while our table is under the shade of a tree. She refused because according to her, she must comply to the manager's instructions. We were not allowed to stay on the part of the terrace reserved for restaurant !!! We told her that in this case we couldn't stay because after 3 hours drive we were not able to sit under the sun during an hour. Unbelievable but alas true ! …
