On paper it looks and sounds amazing, with old chateau style main building, spa and pool.
In reality it is a confusing mish mash of grand old building, which is no longer in use and being left to decay, and new golf resort wing which has been badly designed and built maybe in the early 2000’s. Which doesn’t add anything to grandeur of the old part.
All the facilities are located in the new wing, including restaurant and bar. With the exception of the outdoor pool, which is a long walk and had no facilities near by.
The restaurant was very disappointing with very limited menu on both nights that we stayed. It seems they may be running things down to close soon??
Mojitos in Bacardi glasses but not using Bacardi rum. The last straw in the building so had to cut it in half so we could each have one!
No vegetarian options on the menu at all and when asked, the chef did prepare one ,but it only consisted of a mixture of the side vegetables used in other dishes and charged at full price!
Our room was ok, with a terrace overlooking the golf course and working AC.
Very quiet which considering the size of the hotel and time of year is surprising. But this goes for the whole of Margaux. As a world famous wine region producing very expensive wines you would have thought the place would be heaving and busy with Porsche and Mercedes drivers everywhere as is the case in Cognac. But not so.
Maybe there’s no where decent to eat or to stay?
This hotel isn’t particularly cheap and not particularly good. But could be amazing.

This hotel is ideally located in the heart of the Medoc wine region. Unfortunately the hotel doesn't fit anymore in the 'grand cru' range: it needs an urgent refurbishment. Both the rooms and the bathroom are outdated. The staff are very friendly and breakfast is great. The spa was a disappointment.

Big and sprawling and looking tired - can’t say the architecture inspires and the golf course was closed for our visit as it was under extensive remodelling- this meant a 30 minute drive to other courses. Staff were good , the fine dining restaurant disappointing ( small minimal servings ) - much better restaurants close by in my view . Good parking , stuffy Spa pool and not much else. The room was good as was the bathroom ( good power from the shower ). Won’t rush back - Golf du Medoc much better all round.

This has been the worst hotel, we have visited and we have visited lots of hotels all over the world.

The pictures on the internet look nice and I have to say that we were welcomed very friendly. After that, everything went down hill fast.

The property is very outdated and needs immediate renovation. Stains in carpet, paint is off the woodwork, and the hotel smells like the windows have been closed since 1992. The bathroom was up to date, if you were in the hotel in 1994. However, on a positive note: the bed was good.

The price of the room including breakfast is way too much for the quality you get. You get the feeling that the owners are squeezing out every euro without investing anything in the property. This feeling is stressed by the fact that housekeeping “forgot” to clean our room.

The chairs in the restaurant were broken (see pictures). Housekeeper from Tunesia was very friendly and helpful.

The main restaurant is closed and we needed to eat in the bar of the golfclub. Breakfast was okay but nobody of the staff was there to greet you and to refill the buffet. The price of € 19 per person was too high.

Flexibility in service (we wanted to have a burger for dinner as we had a good lunch somewhere else earlier) was not there. We could only order a burger as part of a 3 course dinner and not only a burger. Really?

Avoid the “hotel” (I am not sure if this qualifies as hotel, because I could not find hospitality anywhere) at all costs.

We had a wonderful stay here after "trying" to stay in the centre of Bordeaux! Having spent 1 night in that awful place we desperately looked to check in elsewhere, Relais de Margaux was the best decision we ever made!

Staff were extremely welcoming and friendly, rooms were fantastic and comfortable, pool and grounds well maintained and adequate. As for the dining experience, WOW! Food and wines were outstanding.

You DO need a car unless you are into walking, but this is not a fault of the hotel. The area itself is packed full with fantastic chateaux to explore and taste wines. We would go back to this hotel, and the Medoc area again.

The Relais de Margaux is that unfortunate combination of old/rundown, lacking sufficient and/or attentive staff, inconvenient location, overrated and terribly expensive for what you get. My wife and I are NOT terribly picky, and we generally have written positive reviews about the places we have stayed over these years, but we both agree this is the WORST hotel we have stayed at in Europe over the last five years of our travels. The cost of our room (400 Euros per night) is frankly a travesty. Particularly as this includes almost nothing but the room. Breakfast for the two of us (a functional but marginal - youth hostel type bread and cheese buffet complete with flies) was 42 Euros additional. If you want to use the pool or spa facilities - its an additional 30 Euro each. WiFI is an additional 19 Euro per night. Accordingly, with no effort at all, this becomes a 500 Euro per night hotel not including dinner.

The room had a youth hostel type, feminine napkin matress with thin, cheap blankets and uncomfortable pillows. While we had a nice view of the golf course, the can of bugspray (Raid) prominantly displayed on our entrance table caused us to question whether the golf course and its bugs were a good thing.

The location (billed as 800 Meters from Chateau Margaux) is classic marketing b.s. While an 800 M walk would take you to the back wall of Chateaux Margaux (with a distant view of the back of the Chateaux the actual entrance to the Chateau was at least 3-4 km from the hotel. There was absolutely nothing close by (town is a 2-3km walk) and there are no shops anywhere near the property to purchase water, bread or anything at the hotel. Without a car, you feel trapped - like you are at a sanitorium. And while the hotel will call you a cab, we found out from the cab driver that there are kick-backs to the concierge resulting in ridiculous fares (cost us over 120 Euro to be driven back to the train station in Bordeaux in a cab called by the hotel while it cost 65 Euro to take that same cab ride to the hotel from the train station).

The restaurant is poorly managed with average (at best) food, slow service, mediocre and overpriced wine and an unknowledgeable/untrained staff. One afternoon my wife and I ordered a "vanilla milkshake" listed on the menu at 4.5 Euro. It ended up being around 4 ounces of milk, sugar and ice with no icecream whatsoever. The menu is quite limited and the food marginal and overpriced. A 3-inch piece of seabass was overcooked and at 39 Euro one of the least appetizing things for the money we have ever eaten in Europe. The wine list is bereft of decent and well priced local wines.

Add to that an untrained staff (the two on duty in the restaurant were younger than 21) and it led to thirty minute waits for a beer or a glass of wine or even water. And this was not yet the start of the high-season. We watched as even the ever-patient Europeans finally lost their patience and began carrying their checks to the register to pay. Waits of 45 minutes-1 hour in an uncrowded restaurant are difficult to handle. A 4-hour dinner of 2 1/2 courses of mediocre food is difficult to digest.

I could go on and on. This is a 3-star hotel at MOST. Wallpaper and paint are peeling from the walls. Other than the clubhouse restaurant and spa, the rest of the hotel has not been upgraded in what looks like at least 30 years. At 125 Euro a night, it might be serviceable. At 400 Euro a night (without anything being included) it is sheer robbery; a clear ploy to pay the expense of the underused (and presumably expensive to maintain) golf course. Bottom line - DO NOT STAY HERE unless you are truly desperate or a glutton for punishment or if you are a very wealthy masochist. If you do stay here and are disappointed - you cannot say you were not warned.

The front of house staff were welcoming , but there the luxury ended. The hotel is an unashamed money making venture, The room was in serious need of a makeover, and the restaurant was poorly run and had even run out of Margaux wines! I wanted a swim after my long drive, and was charged 30euros for the privilege. The leisure centre consisted of a postage stamp pool with some wave makers up one side, and a waft of aromatherapy. If I had wanted to use it the following morning before departing, I would have had to spend a further 30 euros.
For a hotel of this alleged class, everything was extra, from the extortionate rates for internet access to use of hotel bicycles.
I would advise anyone visiting the vineyardsof Bordeaux to make a wide detour of this undesirable property.

We stayed at this hotel 4 years ago and remembered this place for its good food and spacious and nice rooms. This time the experience was very disappointing. The rooms we got was in the old part of the hotel and could use some refreshing; in particular the bathrooms. The restaurant experience was the complete opposite of what we experienced 4 years ago. Our family of four received a set of dishes that were all flawed: Dried our pan-fried salmon, overdone meet (lamb and duck), and a staff that did not speak English.
It is sad that this place in such nice surroundings have deteriorated to such a low level.
