Magical is an understatement; Transcendent is more apropos. Took my wife to Costa Rica, specifically to this region (Nosara) to get the Costa Rica experience outside of the more touristy locations. This location / resort blew us away on all fronts. The vies, the rooms, the restaurants, the staff/service (even the manager Edwin) all deserve shout outs! We only planned to stay 3 days, but ended up staying there the entire time, because even the Locals (Ticos and Ticas) said that this was the best place to stay for shear beauty and lux. Yes, the road is bumpy getting to the resort, but as the welcome sign says, "Rough Roads make for Good People." If you are on the fence, as to where to stay, this HAS to be on your list as a must see and do! This is PURA VIDA at it finest.

Lagarta lodge was the final stop on our 14 day trip to Costa Rica where we stayed for 5 nights. The hotel is sat on the top of the cliffs with great views and amazing sunsets. First impressions were really good with nice pools with great views and immaculate gardens. Our room was large and very spacious we had a 2-bedroom unit which was well equipped with a fridge etc. The furnishings are basic but very comfortable, the air-conditioning was very good and a spacious bathroom. I have to say it was always kept very clean.
The hotel itself is a bit isolated away from any other bars or restaurants but the hotel has a shuttle every 2 hours into the town this operates between 10am and 4pm although this would be better running into the early evening. We didn’t have data so struggled to book a return using their WhatsApp so ended up getting a Tuk Tuk back. From the hotel you can walk to the beach or through the trails but it is better with a guide. The hotel pools are lovely with plenty of sunbeds and towels etc sometimes it was very slow to get drinks as you need you need to request service via the Whatsapp but appreciate they cant have a person just waiting at the pool bar.
As the hotel is quiet isolated there is only one place to eat and the menu is very limited. In general the food was not of great standard and expensive for what we received. This would be fine for 1-2 nights but with limited options we were eating the same things repeatedly. We sent a dish back once and it was not well received and was no better when it came back. I did complain but was brushed aside. The service at breakfast and dinner was at times disorganised, the staff were lovely just no organisation, having to ask for coffee at breakfast, not clearing plates, food arriving at random times etc. The reception staff could be more helpful and friendly. At times it felt like we were just being processed. If we wanted to book an external activity then we were told you need to sort that but they were happy to take our money for a hotel activity. At check out we were never asked if everything was ok just given our account and paid the bill. It all lacked friendly customer service. The hotel has a lot to offer with great facilities and location just needs some improvements in the food and customer care.

The staff is incredibly accommodating, professional and friendly. Everything was always clean and organized. There was wildlife everywhere around the resort, iguanas, monkeys, and coaties that we could watch from the pool or our balcony. We saw crocodiles in the river from breakfast and got photos from our rooms balcony. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking and incredible. We had a partial ocean partial jungle view room and the view was exactly what I would want or expect. We didn’t hear any guests from our room the entire time we were there.
The pools were clean, warm and beautiful. The deck chairs were in good shape and staff were quick to move the chair pads when it rained and in the evenings so they were kept dry.
We went on a fishing excursion and without really having a game plan decided to bring some fresh fish back, not knowing how we’d cook or deal with it. The restaurant took our mahi mahi and tuna and for an incredibly reasonable fee made ceviche, sashimi, grilled tuna and fish and chips for the kids, there was 19 in our party.
Hoping to return and would recommend to anyone!

Really enjoyed our stay at Lagarta Lodge. The location and views (once you've negotiated the terrible road from Nosara to reach it) are absolutely stunning, and the hotel and its grounds are delightful - well maintained, spotlessly clean with very comfortable and functional rooms. Amazing, too, to be able to see birds, howler monkeys and other wildlife just from our balcony, and also to be able to visit the adjacent nature reserve. The local beaches and Nosara provided excellent opportunities for walking, supplemented by the hotel shuttle and local tuk-tuks when the ascent back to the hotel was too much.
All of the staff with whom we had contact were, without exception, fantastic - friendly, helpful and very customer-focused. Breakfast was delicious and there was plenty of choice, but if I had to find fault with the hotel I would say that their dinner menu was somewhat limited and also expensive. However, that certainly wouldn't stop us returning to Lagata Lodge if the opportunity arose!

We fell in love with Costa Rica, starting our trip in the Arenal Volcano area followed by the Cloud Forest in Monteverde. We engaged in multiple hikes and activities in both locations and were looking forward to concluding our holiday for a few days of relaxation at the Lagarta Lodge before coming back to the UK.
Sadly, this hotel left us feeling extremely underwhelmed and questioning the hotel's commitment to guest satisfaction.
The most glaring issue we encountered was the shockingly poor service at the hotel's restaurant. It appeared as though the staff had received minimal, if any, proper training. Their amateurish approach to service was evident through a series of dining mishaps.
Meals were not served simultaneously, forcing some of us to wait while others ate. Upon arrival, we found ourselves requesting the table to be cleaned, a basic expectation unmet.
Throughout our meals, we had to repeatedly ask for attention for things as simple as water refills and for our table to be cleared after finishing our main courses. The expectation to be offered dessert was met with disappointment; we had to request menus ourselves.
To top off the lacklustre dining experience, we were also left to collect our bill, an ending note that felt in line with the inattentive service we’d grown accustomed to during our stay.
I wrote to the hotel's general manager who offered his apologies and kindly gave us a complimentary meal the following evening.
The service was much improved but still my main course plate was cleared before my wife had finished hers. Taking this still one step further (in the wrong direction), the waiter asked me if I'd like to order a dessert although my wife was still working her way through her food.
These details underpin the poor coaching the team had been given.
Beyond the restaurant, attention to detail in housekeeping was lacking. We encountered used coffee cups left behind in our room, and while our bed was made daily, it was evident this task was performed hastily, further reflecting the overall lack of care.
It's important to note that while the hotel has three pools, contrary to our expectations, none are suitable for swimming due to their small size. This was a significant letdown, especially considering the tropical climate.
It's also worth pointing out that the hotel isn't near the town centre and this is only accessible with transport.
The hotel is set against a backdrop of absolutely stunning views, which indeed were a highlight of our visit to Nosara. However, these breathtaking vistas cannot compensate for the fundamental hospitality shortfalls we experienced. Hospitality is about creating a welcoming, attentive, and seamless experience for guests, something that Lagarta Lodge, unfortunately, did not deliver during our stay. (arranged by Audley Travel)

This resort has lots going for it, the location is spectacular, the rooms are first rate with comfortable bedding, all hard surfaces which are kept sparkling clean and nice amenities in each room. There are two pools and two hot tubs including an adults only hot tub. The personnel of the resort are very dedicated to ensuring a great stay. Our balcony was a lovely way to spend time relaxing. Overall it is a pleasure to stay at the property. The downsides we experienced were a less than stellar first meal in the dining room (we honestly left most on the plate ) and that the shuttle service doesn't provide evening service which we would have liked for other evening meals options. The area is not walkable to anything else as far as commercial ventures.
I have to say that the remaining meals we had which were breakfast daily, three lunches and 5 dinners were great. The menu isn't expansive but rather inventive. They are also quite willing to let you customize the dishes a bit. We took the electric boat excursion in the adjoining nature preserve which I highly recommend. Without hesitation I can rate this property as a business worth your consideration
Note to management, please consider adding a couple hammocks. I think they would be a great addition for lounging.

This hotel is a hidden paradise. It was our first visit and literally everyone made our family feel special and welcome. The entire staff is amazing and the food was incredible. Special shout out to Cesar, David, and Victor. Amazing human beings and very kind and generous of their time. They are the best! The hotel has breathtaking views of the river and ocean. The rooms are spacious and relaxing. Very clean!! The restaurant is five stars and you can feel confident eating anything they serve or drinking their fresh water which is some of the best I have ever tasted. We felt like we were surrounded by family. This is a special place to visit. It was SO relaxing and peaceful. Secluded location with many options of activities. It’s a great place to bring family. Everything was three times better than what we expected. The hotel went out of there way to assist us with excursions. Thankful for this once in a lifetime experience. We will be back. This is also a great time of year to visit. Not crowded.

The most amazing place we’ve ever stayed. Went with two teenagers and my mum. I thought I’d have a chance to sit and read my book but the views were so incredible I didn’t read a page. Going into the rooms felt like I was an Instagram post they were so lovely. Staff were really wonderful always friendly and very efficient. Food also delicious. Also loved the unlimited access to the nature reserve and the range of activities to book onto although we didn’t book any as the location was so stunning we didn’t want to leave!

Absolutely outstanding! The experience began with the fantastic location and was only enhanced by the incredibly friendly and attentive staff. We stayed here as a couple for 4 nights during our 2 week visit to Costa Rica.
Firstly, the hotel's location is absolutely stunning and I think the view from the restaurant and pools would be hard to beat! We had a hire car and there was plenty of parking and the hotel was easy to find and get too.
We did 2 trips with the hotel, their night walk and boat trip. Both of which we really enjoyed particularly the boat trip. The boat was electric and made for a very peaceful journey down the river, we saw lots of wildlife with a knowledgeable guide and refreshment on board. Perfect!
The hotel itself is very clean, the pool area and walkways around the hotel were always immaculate!
What we felt let the hotel down was the food situation. We only ate in the restaurant on our first evening (other than breakfast each morning which was included) the evening menu was very limited and we felt expensive for what it was. The food here was probably the least impressive out of everywhere we have stayed and was the most expensive!
It also seemed hard to get a drink whilst by the pool or anything to eat outside of the evening dinning. There is a snack menu and we tried to order from that but was told once evening food had started at 5.30 you can't get a snack. On that evening the restaurant was also full so we actually had no option but to go into Nosara for food.
The snack menu timings were confusing, we got conflicting info from staff and had a map with timings on the back that said snacks were until 9!
There are however plenty of restaurants that are easy to get to from the hotel.
Overall we liked this hotel but we felt the food and some of the staff didn't hold up to the hotel's luxury feel.

The Tuk Tuks are available when the hotel shuttle isn’t to get around. The hotel uses the WhatsApp to communicate and arrange local service so be sure to ask them to help you with transportation. They arranged the Tuk Tuks for us through the trip. They were around $20 each way depending on how far you want to go. Not sure of the exact shuttle times but around 7:30am-5pm time frame.
Hi Joanne! Our Gecko Lounge is perched at the top level of the facilities but it is situated at a considerable distance from our accommodations. The spirit of the lounge is lively, featuring live music on select nights. But the atmosphere is relaxed and does not entail disruptive or late-night noise. Hope this is helpful! We look forward to sharing our magnificent sunsets!
We met a guy who surfed the beach near our condo at Villa del Sol, but most surfers walked to Guiones to surf. We’re not surfers so can’t really advise.
There are more places to choose from in the Nosara area.
