The Elgin Nor-Khill ("the house of jewels")is known for its tradition and ethnic Sikkimese ambiance. It is now a luxury heritage property. The Kanchan garden affords a rich view of the hills with the Mount Kanchenjungha in the background, which inspired the Chogyal (King) of Sikkim to paint for hours. The Elgin Nor-Khill was built by the King of Sikkim in 1932 and is the oldest heritage property in Gangtok, the property has played host to numerous celebrity guests such as his holiness The Dalai Lama, Hollywood stars Sir Richard Gere, Michael Douglas and Shirley Maclaine, the US Ambassador to India His Excellency John Galbraith and many more. The lobby is resplendent in the bright folk Sikkimese art with design motifs depicting dragons and flame symbols to thankas and ornate Sikkimese furniture (bachu, chocsue) and traditional jewelry.

We stayed at this property for 3 nights last week. From arrival to departure we loved every moment of our stay in this property. Multiple factors make it a must stay
a. Extremely well maintained property with old world charm. Beautiful lounge, bar and garden to have your morning/evening tea and spend leisure time just idling.
b. Great rooms. Spacious and well done. Cozy.
c. Extremely personalised service. Housekeeping requests are instantaneously addressed (faster than cooking a Maggi!). Service in restaurant /bar is extremely warm. Every staff member is trained to serve you well in terms of being helpful. Some minor lapses (not being perfect) dont even worry you due to warm and friendly service. Same with lobby/reception staff.
d. Great Food. We only had breakfast and evening tea but it was all good.
e. Last but most important, the hotel dog 'Hilton' is a great attraction for pet lovers. Even though a big one, he is very friendly and loves to be with guests.

There is one feedback though I would like to share. The evenings were not 'buzzing'. What I mean is that somehow restaurants does not seem to attract enough guests - both residents as well as locals.

I think there are few things hotel can do to make it lively in evenings
a. Live music
b. Dinner - Relatively speaking viz. restaurants in Gangtok, restaurant is rather highly priced and food variety is limited and old fashioned Indian/Chinese (here I think even Elgin needs to breakout and offer more modern/contemporary food)
c. Promote it as a place to be in the evenings when in Gangtok. I couldn't even find reviews of the restaurant on any site.

I am really pleased with the hospitality and service extended at this hotel. Its a heritage property turned into a 5* hotel. The look and feel is palatial and elegant. Every nook and corner oozes with royalty. The lobby is extravagant with plush sofas, for your chit chats and meetings. The lawn beside the lobby is the USP of the hotel. The view of the Kanchenjunga peak sneaking out of the mountains is a view to behold. The resident dog, Hilton was a delight for my kid.
The hotel is situated just down the road from the main crossing leading towards the Paljor Stadium. The lawn has a bird's eye view of the Stadium.
The whole property is carpeted and is very quaint & quiet. There is a separate space for the spa and/or salon. There is a lot of greenery in and around the property.
Coming to the rooms, the setting is beautiful with wooden flooring and a very comfortable bed. We got the opportunity of a suite upgrade on our last day of stay, it turned out to be even better. The rooms have a good size and comes equipped with all relevant amenities and a heater for the winters. The bathroom had a bathtub and a large geyser, for that extra flow of hot water. The views from the rooms are not that great though.

Another USP of the hotel was the lovely food they served. Each and every meal was brilliant. We stayed for a total of 5 nights there and each day we had something different to taste. For a specific lunch, we had ordered many off-the-menu dishes and the staff obliged us by cooking them deliciously. They were polite enough to cook baby food for my kid and give them in a flask for later consumption. They were extremely cordial and forward in there approach. They have a bar as well. The prices are a tad bit on the higher side.

first lets get to the pros-
1)Excellent location, with a great view & 10 mins walk to the market which is perfect & makes it quite yet walking to restaurants , huge football stadium next door perfect for an eve walk or jog.
2) The Highlight of our trip" HILTON",he adorable super friendly & a loving fluff ball.
3) Gr8 service from the staff well trained.
4) Well made small boutique hotel with an heritage old world charm.
cons-
1) Bathtub was not operational with hot water was freezing to use .
2)Dinner buffet at 1750/- is a complete rip off with very few dishes esp in non veg, this surely needs to be changed as there is no restaurants till 0.50kms & should encourage meals in the hotel.
All said if I return to Gangtok I shall be back in this hotel .....

Spent of my memorable vacay days over here in Gangtok near Palzor Stadium. This hotel is well-known amongst the people of Sikkim as the "Laltern Hotel" as they have curated and decorated the hotel like a palace with vintage lanterns and also various other intricate decors. Nor-Khill means a place full of jewels, and this place justifies it.
The first impression that we get while entering is the warmth of the place, hospitality, courteous staff and ambience. Their staff is very courteous and room service and hospitality is always just a call away. Amenities wise they have facilities for laundry, iron, bathtub, hair dryer, mini bar, etc. We had the American Meal Plan which included Breakfast, Lunch as well as Dinner. Has a open air garden where we had tea and if you want you can smoke there as well. Overall a lavish experience from the trusted group of hotels in the lap of Himalayas. Besides all the comfortable stay they have a restaurant and a bar inside with a beautiful big piano in the common room with a lot of books and some board games too. Also if you want to visit M G Marg Market commonly called "Gangtok Mall", it is 4-5 mins in a cab.

So just to give you a backdrop before arriving in Gangtok we had a two-night stay at Pelling. We had a glimpse of Elgin hospitality at their property Elgin Mount Pandim at Pelling and that became the only reason for our disappointment with Elgin at Nork-hill.

The staff at Nork-hill was a bit disappointing and maybe they should be sent out to Mount Pandim property to get a refresher on hospitality and amazing customer service.

That being said, let me get to the good part. The moment I entered the property the lobby area took me back in time to the era of the Colonial British Raj in India. Replete with pictures through the history of Sikkim, the royal family of Sikkim, the dignitaries, and of course the antique artifacts and the wooden furnishing that gave you the feel and vibe that you are in midst of an exclusive club of an old bygone era.

I loved the breakfast, especially with the table settings that made me feel like a member of the aristocratic family being pampered with an eclectic mix of Indian and Continental menu items to choose from. Kids loved that they got to have their favourites like salamis and sausages.

If the weather is good, enjoy breakfast in the outdoor garden greens with the hills in the backdrop. Makes for a great scenic view.

Don't forget to play with the super cute dog Hilton, he is a total fun character and a smart dog too.

The property also is close to MG Road, though it is a steep climb from the property to MG Road if you choose to go walking. Not an easy walk by any chance but among the hotels close to MG Road I would rate this as the best. Also probably this is the only property in the city center that has parking and a garden.

So if you can overlook the staff factor, this is one amazing place to stay as part of your travels through Sikkim. Don't miss an opportunity to indulge a shopping jaunt at MG Road.

Stayed here for two days in Gangtok. This hotel is simply called Nor-Khill Hotel here which is located just beside Palzor Stadium. They gave us a warm welcome. The decor here is very majestic and has a big piano in the common room along with a library. At first instance you find the staff being very courteous and the hospitality being top-notch. This is definitely one of the best hotels in Gangtok with all facilities. They have a in-house restaurant and a separate bar section. They also sport a spa section. The food quality of this hotel is no doubtedly finest here. Had a pleasant experience with breakfast, lunch as well as dinner. Rooms were big and comfortable. Assistance and room service was just a second away. Overall enjoyed my stay with my friends. Also the Gangtok mall is 5 mins in car from this place.

We booked a room for 5 days misguided by the ratings, paying more than 2 days' rent as advance. When we arrived at the hotel, what we found was an old musty smelling one which do not have any facility which justify the amount they charge. Not maintained to a classy standard. Taking bath was a struggle since we had to climb inside a small tub. There was a big geyser on the wall, which was not seen any luxury hotel. Flooring, tiles, furnitures, curtains, etc were all giving us a feeling of discomfort. Same day we informed our dissatisfaction to the front desk and our intention to cut short the stay. Next day, the breakfast was even more pathetic. For example, I have never seen such a bad chicken sausage in my life. Bare minimum items and of low standard. We looked for other options in the town and found excellent hotels at much lower price. So, to save ourself from the misery, we checked out after 2 nights. When I asked for an invoice, the front desk refused to give saying I had to contact their reservation. When I contacted the reservation and requested for refund of excess amount, they flatly refused saying it is the cancellation policy. The hotel is definitely not for people who are looking for comfort and value for money. Rest of our trip, we stayed in Denzong Regency, which is an excellent place and we thoroughly enjoyed our remaining holidays. My advice: never pay more than 1 days' rent as advance if you are not sure about the place!

We had a great time at this wonderful property. Right from check in , where we were upgraded as it was my mons Birthday.
During tea time ,we were served tea with cookies and cakes which were too good .
Dinner time ,the food , the service and the variety were top notch. The best thing I liked was that every day there was one local dish made entirely in thier local preperation and for me that was the best.
Special thanks to Mr Sudip the restaurant manager and Mr Sushant and our bartender Mr Raghunath and thier complete staff for making our trip memorable.

The hotel and its ambience is excellent.Very good rooms with excellent maintenance.Behaviour of staffs are very friendly.
If anybody wants to go to MG marg it's only 700mtrs approx but very stiff slope. Its difficult for aged people.
Breakfast spread is good. But the foods are very expensive. All the plates costs nearly to Rs.500 which will pinch you during paying.
