We stayed for two nights on a half board basis. We wanted a quiet weekend in nice surroundings. The communal areas of the hotel are really nice, plenty of places to sit and relax, including the lovely gardens. We had a standard room, which looked a bit tired but it was clean and the bed was comfortable. There were tea...

Our second visit to the George Hotel. The staff are exceptional, especially the highly efficient and friendly restaurant staff, a lot of hotels and restaurants could learn a great deal from the way this restaurant is run. Overall, a great value for money weekend.

This hotel is in a fab location and it looks wonderful from the outside. However, the rooms are desperately in need of some TLC as they are looking tired and frayed at the edges. Ours had a badly stained divan base which was rather off-putting, and the bedside lampshades were stained and tatty. I also grazed my arm on some...

Firstly the location is really good, right next to river with wide ranging views. Great location to head off exploring the many things to do in the area. Will come onto the hotel itself later.... We arrived in the evening and given the fairly remote location decided to eat in the hotel restaurant. The Table D'hote menu looked great value...

A very dated hotel in need of a complete makeover.. Was probably a wonderful hotel in days gone by. The room needed decorating as it was mouldy with paint falling off and wallpaper coming loose. The food was only average but plentiful and the staff were pleasant. Gym and pool were neglected and all needed a good clean. As the...

We had perfect stay in George. There was a nice warm welcome when we arrived. Our room was ok, we came for walk by Hadrians Wall, so first of all, the hotel location and our food were in our focus. We booked for dinner at the reception what is started 6.30pm. On the dinner menu, there are many choises, like...

This hotel is in a beautiful location with lovely gardens overlooking the river Tyne. We stayed here for 3 nights over spring bank - our first visit to this area. Our room was spacious and comfortable and spotlessly clean, with a really big bathroom. Food at breakfast and dinner was excellent, as was afternoon tea. All the staff were really...

This should be the perfect hotel. It has a beautiful location in the heart of Northumberland right next to the river and very close to a lot of Roman ruins. The gardens are beautiful and on first glance the outside of the hotel looks the same. However that's where it ends. The hotel is tired, beyond shabby chic! Rusty plug...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Set in a beautiful river front location, just five miles from the market town of Hexham, the George at Chollerford is a historic building dating back to the 1700's renowned for its fine food and hospitality. It is great to have such a history behind the hotel as we feel we are doing an excellent job of keeping the tradition going, but we have also spent a lot of money upgrading a number of facilities in the hotel including the leisure club, with its swimming pool and gym, situated west of Newcastle we are in ideal spot for walkers, history buffs and gardeners alike - you will be spoilt for choice. The hotel is a perfect retreat in a location that we consider to be one of the most relaxing in Northumbria. ... more   less
