Are you tired of the usual kind of holiday resort and keen on snorkeling? Then Mumbo Island (Kayak Africa) in the middle of Lake Malawi is the place to go. It is a cast-away island which can accommodates only 14 people and is therefore far from the maddening crowd. All units are private and have magnificent views over the lake....

Perfect way to end our holiday...on Mumbo Island. It has a bit of a Robinson Crusoe feel about it, but with the luxury of nice beds, attentive staff attending to all your needs. Delicious meals are served in the island kitchen with desert twice a day and even home made biscuits with your morning tea in your tent.

Mumbo is just great. Don't worry about the eco stuff - it's fine. The bucket shower works well - it's surprising how much it holds. And guys there's enough hot water with your morning tea or coffee to shave with if you wish to! The food is really good...breakfast, lunch and dinner. How bizarre to have fantastic crumble and custard...

This is the most unique island I have ever been to. Lovely and friendly staff. Excellent facilities, each tent-villa has a private balcony overlooking the lake. Hot showers are outside in your private bathroom next to your villa and will be prepared only on your request. At sunrise tea or coffee is served at your balcony and you can enjoy...

Wow- what a stunning place this is. Mumbo has Eco down. From the lovely out-door hot-water showers that are hung up at your hut allowing you to shower under the setting sun with a fantastic view of the lake, the compost toilets that really aren't as bad as they sound, the solar lamps that are magically lit up along the...

Just after dawn we left Kumbali Lodge in Lilongwe and set off for Cape Maclear, where we would be taking a boat to our next destination, Mumbo Island. Mumbo Island is an Eco-lodge. I had no real idea what that meant. I had heard we would be sleeping in a tent, pooping in a "Drop toilet",and having "Bucket showers"? At...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Set on a pristine, practically deserted tropical island, the eco-friendly Mumbo Camp is surrounded by crystal-clear waters. Lake Malawi National Park is the first in the world set aside for the protection of freshwater fish and therefore, not surprisingly, one of the best freshwater diving locations on the planet. With an idyllic lake view, you can while the hours away on the hammock on your private deck. Refreshments are served in the dining area and pub. Be warned, this lazy island lifestyle is contagious!Did you know?Mumbo Island Camp has partnered with Malawi's Department of National Parks and Wildlife to put an end to illegal fishing operations in this sanctuary.Lake Malawi is Africa's third largest and second deepest lake. Mumbo is just one of the miombo woodland islands that pepper the lake. Your activities include scuba diving and snorkelling, while kayaking and boating allow you to explore the surrounding granitic islands.Over 2 000 species of colourful freshwater fish grace our lake. Spotted-necked otter are often seen while the rarer Cape clawless otter, less so. On the island you can see rainbow skinks and large water monitors.
