We booked the room ahead for a night. So we got the ground floor room with balcony facing the mountain. The room has no ventilation, so the door and windows have to be opened during the day. During the night, although outside was cold, the room was stuffy and warm because of no ventilation. The room has no bottled water, coffee, tea, or cups for you to make a drink. You have to buy from the canteen. There were cockroach nymphs in the toilet when the lights were out at night. If it was not the price and the great view, I would give it a lower rating. You need a vehicle to stay here.

Such an exquisite view of nature.
Im fall in ♥️ with this place; worth the narrow & steep, potholes & bumpy road!
Not to mention the enjoyable stargazing moment!. Whoever books for a stay is advisable to come before / by 6pm as the journey to reach here is quite challenging (steep, narrow, potholes & bumpy road). Magnificent view of sunrise & sunset with clear view of mt kinabalu.
The place just provide the basic necessities & dont expect more; bed, towel, shower gel & shampoo. No aircond & no fan in the room. There is common area downstairs - kitchen & tv area. Its colder in the evening, night & morning.
Basically u pay to enjoy the nature & priceless view.

One of the most beautiful places I've stayed in. The journey here was not the easiest, but once we're there, we didn't want to leave. The free breakfast was good, God-sent for a backpacker. Dinner was excellent! It was really nice to just lounge all day on the field, but what would make it perfect is just to place some sunbeds! Water in the shared shower was not hot.

The road condition to Hounon Ridge is terrible, especially if you are coming from the Ranau direction. The view from the homestay is spectacular but the service is not very good compared to our previous homestay in kundasang. If you intend to do steamboat ay night, please take note. Guests can rent their steamboat set but they wil provide u just the steamboat pot and the stove. There is no utensils and bowls and you need buy these from their pathetic little grocery shop. Also, it seems like by default no toilet rolls are provided in the room. The little coffee table set in our room is also broken. The only good thing about this homestay is the bed is very comfy.

This is the most challenging journey I’ve ever been to. To reach this place, you have to drive very deep into the villages. The road is very extreme, requiring me turn the wheel here and there to avoid the holes.

But you reach there, the view is breathtaking. Worth every part of the journey. The view in the morning 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

The room is nice, no towel provided. Got camping site too.

We had a horrible stay at this beautiful location. John, the owner, did not care that his establishment promotes tranquility and quiet in such a magnificent setting for his customers. He and his drunken cronies blasted karaoke outside until 10:30 p.m. when we politely told him that it was late and we needed to sleep. His excuse was that he only had five room reservations that night instead of full occupancy, and therefore he and his friends went ahead with their late night carousing. That did not say very much for the rest of us who were. He was so drunk, he could barely stand. His attitude toward unruly and inconsiderate behaviour extended to his customers as well who started shrieking and braying with laughter before the sun came up and went back to this behaviour during the night. The only time there was peace and quiet was in the afternoons. The paper-thin walls conducted and amplified every sound! If you are looking for a quiet getaway, forget about this place. The unpadded wooden floors and stairs all contributed to a noisy environment.

There were two of us, but we only received one bath towel until we requested for more. The hot water heater for the shower produced hot water less than 30% of the time. And believe me, the water was cold up in the mountain. We requested the staff to investigate and was told their water supply was so cold that the heater could only warm it minimally. Additionally, either the water heater itself or the pipe behind in the wall vibrated very loudly from time to time.

Patrons were requested to leave their shoes on the porch outside the lobby before entry. On two occasions, our slippers went missing because the first time around, a female staff wore it outside while moping, and the second time, one of the customers wore it to saunter the grounds! We almost left without them until we spotted them on his feet the next day.

The cookware and utensil supplied for the kitchen were adequate.

The gas burners worked well.

The cafe food downstairs was good and the staff who managed it were friendly and accommodating.

Two refrigerators were provided for public use, but some of our vegetables and food disappeared over a three day span.

We had transferred our deposit for a four night stay a week ahead of arrival, and yet, when we arrived we were told that they had no record of it. We had to contact our bank to whatsapp the receipt to us as proof that our money had already been deposited into their account.

Their rates are reasonable but when one has to put up with all of these inconveniences, there is actually no value.

It has been mentioned by others that the road to get there is very bad. It is no lie. There are more than enough potholes that can do serious damage to your car.

Once again, if you are looking for peace and quiet, stay away.

There is no other place like this farmstay. The view just amazed me. Would not regret it. The staff were friendly. Perfect for family, friends and couples. Solo are not recommendable.

They will provide local guide if you want or not to explore the farmstay and nearby waterfalls.

The biggest drawbacks is you have to buy your own food or else you have to go back to the small town, Kundasang to get some food which is 30-40 minutes away and the road condition is not for average. But there's a kitchen and BBQ set which is nice. All of kitchen utensils are available. You name it.

We were thinking of using this place as the location is really beautiful and quiet. It is out of the way, which is perfect for us. However, we were clearly told that we were not wanted as we are foreigners and foreigners like to 'complain'. Well now I have a reason to complain as we are clearly not welcome there.

this is my honest review:
stayed here for 1 night. booked 4 rooms with private balcony and extra mattresses for 3 of the rooms. Room no G1 - G4.
1. View - this place is magnificent. the view is breathtaking. at night you can see the sky full of stars. day time you can directly see the Mount Kinabalu. its just beautiful. love every corner of this place. so many pretty flowers and plants all over the place. and it is clean and neat.
2. Rooms. - the rooms was nice. queen size bed, big windows, hot shower, no tv, no wifi. the room floor is covered with thick carpet. the toilet floor is freezing but it has a hot shower. at night the water is so cold and the water heater might not heat the water. but you can request the staff for a bucket and you can boil hot water at the kitchen to have warm bath. at night, some bugs might fly into your room. just make sure you close the door & windows.
3. How to get there - you can easily see the signage of Hounon Ridge Farmstay & Camping, from main road you can easily see a big "Bundu Tuhan" signboard and turn right if you are from Kota Kinabalu. You can also find this place using waze. just make sure you are using maxis/celcom. others are not advised. the road though are very adventure and bumpy. i advice you to drive a 4 wheel drive. if you are travelling at night, please be careful. drive slowly because its very dark and thick mist at a few spot. and careful with dogs here too because they like to lay on the road. cows too!
4. Eat - you can cook or bbq here. there is also a small Halal cafe. not sure what time they are operating but saw the cafe is operating during breakfast but closed in the evening til night. to be sure please contact mr. john. For muslims, i suggest you to cook or buy food from KFC Kundasang or Restaurant Hidayah & Catering Kundasang for dinner. from Kundasang town to here takes around 30 minutes.
5. Front desk lady - she was nice and helpful.
6. Dogs - there will be 1-2 dogs in the area sometimes but they don't bite.nice and hungry dogs i assume. gave them some food while we were there ^_^.
7. To see the peak of mount Kinabalu is before 7:30am and late evening. its clear and no clouds surrounding it.
8. The owner Mr John - a nice but very busy man. had to wait for quite sometime for him to reply my message. he even missed my message & booking at one time. mistakenly thought i was someone else after making the booking. but it turn out okay at booking side. when arrived, he was at the front desk.he checked my booking and told me i paid full.as an honest person i told him i did not pay full.i only paid half for the booking as he told me to. he even lost my booking deposits receipt. so i showed him the transaction and he is ok with it. i totally understand why it happened. he is using a big booking book. no computer system. he manually write the booking in the book. he said the farmstay is going green. no internet,no microwave & no tv. totally okay with it but the reservation part, i think you must have an online reservation now a days. much easier for you to keep track of the records and payments & much easier for customers to make the reservation.

overall, its a very nice place, quite & peaceful ,very refreshing, very beautiful, & have a breathtaking views!

people, please come here. u will never regret it! ^_^

*Mr John, if you are reading this, i have 1 suggestion. offer more food. especially sabah's local kuih muih for tea time. people will definitely love it. all the best!

We camped out on April 29th, 2017. Weather - perfect. Location - perfect. The access roads are now paved as compared to before. Kitchen facilites - an added luxury. Cafe with food - nice. This was our 5th trip there over the past two years

Unfortunately our quiet evening was completely spoilt by another group of campers with 2 loud amplifiers and a karaoke set. The sound was so loud that we could hardly hear each others' conversations. We were astonished that the management allowed this. It completely disrupts the tranquility of the entire valley. Such inconsiderate behaviour considering that there were so many other guests and a neighbouring resort that was full also.

Sad to say, we will probably never be going back if this continues.Definitely not a place to go to anymore for quiet fun and rest.
