If you want a cheap remote place to stay this is it. The place was rundown and not at all like the photos, no wifi service and mold everywhere. The people were very nice, although the american owner here was rude and snooty. If you must stay here don't expect more than glamping.

El Retono is very peaceful and quiet, yet just a short distance from town. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning. Thank you Debbie, Fili and Sparky for making our stay so memorable.

When I began a search for lodges that could offer outstanding coffee tours and who exemplified the best in terms of sustainability and environmental awareness, I knew I was asking a lot. El Retono Eco-Lodge exceeded all my expectations. The lodge is a gem in a beautiful region. It makes a very light footprint on the landscape, but that footprint... More

Tucked in the middle of abundant vegetation and lovely flowers the comfortable and well designed cabins are a surprise. Fili and Carmen took good care of us. She is an amazing cook and fed us wonderful breakfasts, he is a fantastic caretaker for the grounds. The four of us enjoyed our stay there and we will be back! The area... More

We stayed at El Retono for four nights and were enchanted! One is unsure what to expect at an eco-lodge, but our rooms were very clean and well-appointed with local beautiful bamboo furnishings and linens. Our rooms were a suite, which was perfect for my husband and I and our grown daughter. Our breakfast always included fresh fruit, juice and... More

After leaving the snow, ice and stress of daily life, the walk into El Renono was a reminder of nature and self. I was taken by the trees, the creek. the bamboo and mostly the fragrance of flowers. The staff was charming, the rooms are most beautiful. It is a special place for anyone looking for solace. It is also... More

El Retoño exceeded our high expectations. Set in pristine forest, the accomodations are lovely. At night you are wrapped in silence. Bird calls wake you in the morning. The staff was excellent. All of this within a half hour´s walk of the centro of charming Coatepec. Upon arrival we immediately extended our stay by one night. We wish we could... More

I was looking for a getaway, removed from the usual hustle and bustle of my life. The website looked as if El Retono was made to order, but still when I arrived, I was ill prepared for the beauty that surrounded me. I came for four days but could have stayed for a month. The accommodations were charming. The owner,... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
El Retono is an ecolodge whose goal is to be in harmony with nature. We are located in the town of Coatepec which nestles in the cool, mist shrouded mountains above the hot, humid coastal area of the city of Veracruz. This quaint colonial town offers a peek into the evolving life of a small Mexican town. Since the early 1800's this has been the center of the rich, shade-grown coffee for which Veracruz is famous. These days, however, tourism centers more and more on the natural treasures of the region: waterfalls, river-rafting, hiking, bird-watching, mountain climbing and spectacular flower/orchid shows. ... more   less
