As you drive up the single track between the trees into the sheltered valley where Allt-y-bela nestles the feeling of a special place grows ; round the final bend the earth orange lime washed tower appears with a low range of buildings sheltered by trained crab apples. The poppies add a colour contrast to the planting. An imperious Bengal tomcat observes...

This is a truly wonderful location - the garden, as you would expect, is sublime and the house itself is impressive but the actually hospitality element was underwhelming. Despite a friendly welcome, we did feel that there were several elements that could have been improved on. Whilst the bedroom was very comfortable and very nicely furnished it didn't have any...

Its always a shame when our guests don't quite get it. We do try and comments like these are thankfully unusual. I do hope that other visitors do not let this review put them off as they will miss staying in a very special place.

We were in search of a place to stay near to Cardiff before a funeral for a 101 year old friend. We were coming in two parties from Yorkshire and Cornwall so we focused a search on the Welsh side of the Severn. We were intrigued when we saw the picture of the house, read the write up in Alastair...

An oasis of peace and quiet in the Welsh countryside. The garden is quite beautiful and it was a privilege to have the opportunity to talk with the designer. We were made very welcome from the minute we arrived with tea and Welsh cakes, and felt as if we were simply guests in someone's home. Which of course we were,...

Allt y Bela is a charming medieval farmhouse surrounded by beautiful gardens and babbling brooks set in a peaceful, secluded valley. This historic residence is one of a kind with original, time-worn flagstones throughout the ground floor spaces, chunky ceiling beams, period furnishings, tasteful artwork and a warm welcome. The two bedrooms are vast, with ancient beams and soaring vaulted...

A very special B&B indeed which is off the beaten track, in fact in it's own valley. A magical medieval farmhouse in beautifully landscaped gardens; our stay was perfect. We felt welcomed and the hosts were very accommodating. Breakfast and dinner, cooked in the Aga, were both generous and delicious and we were pleased to find that they used locally...

This is the most exquisite house and gardens in an ancient valley on the Welsh border. The house is unique and inspiring and our room was in it's own wing above the kitchen. We had a delicious dinner in the dining room with an open fire and enjoying relaxing with some of the owner, Arne Maynard's gardening books, in the...

We spent a lovely three days here in October, a great season to appreciate the secluded, beatifully landscaped gardens which provide a stunning setting for this unique house. Our room was huge, with its own fireplace and raftered ceiling, all part of the original medieval farmhouse, adjoining the 16C tower. As Alaisdair Sawday says, there are scenic walks on your...

My wife treated me to a 2 night stay at Allt-y-bela recently. I had no idea what to expect before we got there but I know she likes to find the unusual and quirky. Allt-y-bela is a medieval farmhouse with a turret. It is a private home but two rooms are rented out to guests. We both felt very honoured...

The weather was not good and it was muddy but this was a lovely stay in a gorgeous orange house - lots of beams, old furniture and nooks and crannies - and one of the loveliest gardens I've ever seen. The host was very welcoming and the housekeeper cooks a delicious breakfast, taken in the relaxing kitchen. Even the animals...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Allt-y-bela is an isolated, medieval cruck-framed farmhouse with a renaissance tower that has been repaired recently with great care and sensitivity. It is now an exceptional and well appointed place to stay. Here is quiet, privacy and wonderful bucolic countryside. There are two large double rooms, each with their own bathrooms, one of which additionally has its own shower. There is no TV, but all rooms have wifi. Pets are welcome; we do have free roaming chickens, a dog and a cat. There is usually livestock in the fields around the house. We charge £125 B&B for a double room per night. We have a minimum stay of two nights, however out of season we can do single nights at £150 To secure your booking please send a cheque made payable to W M Collinson for 50% of the amount. Breakfast can be anything our guests would like. Let us know, or we can make suggestions for you from locally produced, and as far as possible, organic ingredients. If you would like an evening meal, a farmhouse supper is available. We charge £30 per person. You will need to bring your own wine. ... more   less
