Detailed Reviews
I Like this hotel. If A little understated and quite unassuming. The town itās in is very quiet and a little modern, but has everything you may need for a weeks stay.
My only complaint would be that the internet is terrible, if you can even get online. But the staff are friendly and the rooms are clean. Well worth stopping if youāre in the area.

The hotel itself is very nice and we had a lovely room. That said, the terrace area for our room was so small, you could just about get a little round table & 2 chairs on it. Every day there was plenty of choice for breakfast, so no problems there. Ten of us booked for an evening meal one night, but disappointingly, the food was poor. There were ingredients missing from some of the starters and the chicken main course was so hard & tough, it was inedible. To be fair, they offered us a replacement meal, that whilst it was ok, it was served so quickly that there is no way the food is freshly prepared. Most days that we were there, we had the swimming pool to ourselves, but nothing else was open, including the pool bar. On our 1st afternoon, I went to reception to ask if we could get a drink to have by the pool, only to be told the bar does open until 7pm. On the Saturday afternoon that we were there, they had a wedding reception being held, and for a couple of hours, we were trapped in the pool area, as the exit to the main hotel lobby area was blocked off by the caterers for the wedding. With a few minor changes, this hotel could be so much better.

The hotel is quiet and cozy.
They gave us the handicapped room but I didn't like it because the shower didn't have a screen or curtain. I asked them to change it for us. They showed me two other available ones, ultimately choosing the room that had the largest terrace. I don't understand why they didn't give me this from the beginning.
The breakfast was very good.
The pool is not bad, although the water was quite cloudy-dirty and the grass was very damaged. Little care.
At midday they don't have a restaurant, just some picnic-type meals. In my opinion, they are somewhat expensive and have little variety. Of the bars in town that they told him we could go to, none were open. Most are only open from Thursday. I advise checking availability first on Google. One noon we went to the only one that had opened in old Castellar (where the Castle is). There is a good quality price relation. Small but charming restaurant.
Dinner at the hotel consists of choosing between several starters, first, second and dessert. Brief letter. Price ā¬20.
Would I repeat? Yeah. Despite everything, yes. Even knowing the drawbacks

Disappointed with our stay once we realised that staff took no notice of our requests.
Nice room, but marred by the fact that the air conditioning broke, and the hotel staff did absolutely nothing about it. There was also a couple in the room below us smoking weed on their patio, which stunk our room out, (window wide open because air con failed) and again, staff did nothing to stop this.
When we complained about the lack of maintainance at check out the following morning, reception staff looked at me in amazement as clearly, she knew nothing about it, even when we told her we'd had no sleep at all and proceded to start to make a phone call ( to maintainance?) but we just walked off to be honest as we were leaving anyway.
Average breakfast, no sauna or treatment room. This is one of the reasons we booked this hotel so we could have peace and quiet, and relaxing massages as treats.
Poor gym with no air con and sun lounger mats for the pool we realised on the morning we were leaving, were stacked up in the rear of the restaurant, so we never used the pool because I suffer with back and hip problem so cannot lay directly on the hard plastic.
We used the L shaped area with comfy cushions at the end of the pool bar to relax but when we came down to sit there on our last day, staff had taken all the cushions away, and put them in a cupboard in the gym area. Needless to say, we retrieved them and made ourselves comfortable.
The bar area incidently outdoor was never staffed.
Aside from our poor stay at the Exe, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening strolls into the vilage for evening meals, and can highly recommend Restaurante Yerbabuena which serves superb plates and the little pizza place next door but one is lovely
The village locals are friendly, prices are low, and we also had a lovely morning at the zoo which is a rescue centre.
We were just gutted the tiger cub was only 10 days old, so we couldnt hold her.
Would we stay at the Exe again, ? On principle , no, as it seemed hotel staff couldn't have cared less.

Dreadful experience in this hotel. We arrived and the minute we walked in it appeared we had walked into some drama. One receptionist was finishing and we were served by the Second Lady who only spoke to mutter under her breath and type into the computer.
Eventually after ages she gave us the room key. We asked about pool towels and she told us they would be at the pool and needed a deposit of ā¬5.
We went to the room which seemed lovely but had a double bed when we specifically booked for twin. We went down to the reception again to be told that was all that was available. Not happy about this I said that wasnāt what we booked and she then started to cry saying she had been working for 5 days straight! Ok call me a Karen but I didnāt have any sympathy, told her we work 5 days every week and this was our hard earned holiday. She told us to come back in 1 hour and she would see what she could do and we could use the double room in mean time.
We went out to the pool which was deserted, no towels nothing except very hard recliners grass overly long with used plasters lying around. We stood on the grass and within minutes our feet were covered in ants.
That was me done and we went back in and checked out.
Not sure about the hotel as we didnāt get beyond the poor welcome and unhygienic pool area.

Booked here to stay one night with hotel groups website for 11th September, having stayed before in the summer and loved it. Unfortunately, due to the Queen passing away we couldnāt travel, so on 10th in the morning I contacted the chat help line to cancel . I was told that it was too late as the cancellation policy is 24 hours before guest check in date, as no time is given itās not check in time meaning I had to cancel by 11.49 on the 8th. If I had booked with booking.com, it would have been 24hours before booking ie check in time, so I would have been fine. I then asked if I could rebook, I was told to contact hotel direct. Did this by email and the just said itās best to just cancel and rebook for when I wanted, I said ok please go ahead and cancel. This they did but without a word, charged me , I wrote back but no reply received.
I am very surprised by this as having booked direct with the hotel group they would not have to pay the fees charged by other booking sites, so would expect better service. Sadly now , I will never return to this hotel.More

Booked this for a few days after drive down from Seville.
The cool abrasive reception we received when TRYING to check in was appalling .
When the reception wasnt busy scowling . She was talking under her breathe.
After 20 mins of this we were given a key and we asked about towels for pool and were told to get them from man at pool
We went to room which was a double .. not a twin as booked and PAID FOR. We returned to reception and were met with a heavy sigh . She said there was non . We explained this was what we booked and wanted our requested room . The receptionist at this point made herself cry and advised she has been working for the past 5 days ā¦ what !! Isnāt this something we all do .
We were told to go and use the room for now and she would let us know when twin was available
We went to the pool and area around pool had .. I kid you not ..at least 4 used plaster on the ground . We proceed to look for man with towels .. nowhere . We sat down and weāre immediately covered in ants .
My sister returned to reception and were met with the receptionist again complaining of her overworked inability to take care of the situation . We promptly left
Please take note this recommendation is very clear of our experience only .

+1
Small but very comfortable hotel, the rooms are quiet, the
Attentive and friendly staff. The restaurant gardens are very welcoming. The buffet breakfast is quite complete. The only negative would be the pool because it is small but quite pleasant.

Stayed here in March on a half board deal from Voyage Prive which was extremely cheap. Suprised to find it was on the edge of a brand new town, very clean, with a few bars and no life. Our room was spacious with a small patio looking out onto a courtyard with a fountain. The hotel is built to resemble an old hacienda, there are lots of fountains but, unfortunately, very few guests! The breakfast was a generous cold spread but the evening meal was very poor, mostly catering stuff and pretty dull. Wonderful reception area, but again empty except for a golf party who stayed for a few days. The staff were friendly, helpful and polite. The downside is that it is situated inbetween a mountain range and one has to either use the motorways to get anywhere or wriggle over the twisty mountain roads. The nearest town is Sotogrande and it is easy to get to from Gibraltar airport. If you were thinking of touring Andalucia it is not a great place to stay.

This hotel is located in the middle of nowhere. Castellar is one of those new communities built in the 2000's before the GFC. I suspect that they high hopes for this hotel complex (near a national park evidently) but the GFC cut things short. What is left is a funny 75 room hotel tacked onto a small town miles from any thing worth while.
When we stayed we were convinced that we were the only guests having the whole wing to ourselves. This was made worse by the staff putting us at the far end of that wing. The halls have no natural light and the lights only turn on when you trigger them. Good for power conservation but adds to the eerie weird feeling. My wife any I (having watch too many B-Grade hotel ghost/horror movies in the past) felt unsettled at the best of times.
When we went for dinner (there is nothing else for miles) we saw some other guests and they looked just as pleased as we were to see them. We saw only two staff - a nice woman on reception/porter/admin duties and another chap who was barman/pool guy/waiter. Seeing the same guy turn up at each event was comical to say the least - "oh hello, you again...".
The decor is nice and almost untouched but lacks any character - as if done by numbers in an interior design office far away.
While nothing was particularly wrong with the place, we were glad to leave and have no reason to retun.

Response from Maria L, Dpto. ComunicaciĆ³n & Marketing at Hotel Castellar
Responded 8 Jun 2015
Dear Mowgli, First of all, we hope you had a nice flight home. One of the main characerisitcs, which also differentiates us from the rest, is where we are situated and our surroundings. The Parque Natural de los Alcornocales is a unique park, with distinguished factors making it unique in Spain. Castellar de la Frontera is a historical village, part of the famous Pueblos Blancos, I dont know if you had the chance to get to see the 'old town of Castellar'. One of our hotel's concept is to be in the centre of nature, be able to live that luxury, but at the same time, being close to other places, like for example, 10 minutes away from Sotogrande, 10 minutes away from Jimena, 20 minutes away from Tarifa, or 20 minutes away from Gibraltar. We want our clients to feel comfortable and be able to relax, yet we also have activities for our guests who want to get to know the area, or participate with nature, such as hiking routes, 4x4 excursions, routes through Pueblos Blancos, fishing, mountain bike... Making a priority as well, the privacy of our guests. The prestigious interior design Studio Thomas Urquijo was in charge of our decoration, and keeps on doing so whenever we make changes or re-decor any spot in the hotel. We are not a 'city hotel', and we appologize if it wasnĀ“t what you were looking for. Wish you all the best in your future trips. Best Regards,
