I review it "poor" instead of "terrible" beacause of two things - it's beachfront and it has a real big piece of quiet and beautiful beach right next to the hotel.

The rest is a fiasco (even not a disaster, a fiasco). This is a can't-go-wrong beachfront location but I got the impression management is bored with managing the place.
You don't have A/C in a sea view bungalow (where we stayed) and it's okay, when you are in a place like that, fan is enough.
The breakfast is poor - you get an egg and two slices of toast bread. Yes, every day the same. There is no housekeeping at all (I wasn't expecting housekeeping - just for the record) but you get a broom. That would be okay and enough if there wasn't a doorstep that makes it impossible to sweep away the sand from the inside. The pillows and towels smell terribly and really I mean terriblly, so terribly you don't want to get out of the shower or rest your head on the pillow. The mosquito net wasn't washed since it was new, mirrors and lamps weren't wiped since they were new.
Okay - I understand - this is a low cost hotel.
This hotel would be wonderful with a little love - okay - you pay RM10 they give you better breakfast, you pay RM10 they change the sheets and clean your room.

All in all I do not reccomend this hotel and it's really not a good price/service proportion.

Dear Martha 145, We are very concerned with your review and puzzled why you did not inform us about the terrible conditions you had to bare with during your 6 night’s stay. We would have definitely looked in to the matter and made sure you would not have to sleep in such dreadful conditions. During rainy days there can been a possibility that towels do not smell as fresh as they normally do, but we would have gladly replaced them for fresh smelling one’s if you had asked. We understand that eggs can get boring for breakfast, however we do try to cook them in variable ways such as French toast, Omelette, Scrambled and fried Egg. We rely on our island shops for supply’s which limit us from certain things, but we try to get a hold of fresh fruit and make fruit salad whenever we can. Thanks to your reviews, we have made the effort to also serve specialities such as Nasi Lemak and roti canai or a type of home made Swiss bread called Zopf. Do bare in mind though that most places in Malaysia with our rates do not include breakfast. I recall coming over to your balcony and giving you anti histamine for your bites and having a friendly conversation about your experience’s on the island which surprise’s me even more that you could not inform me of your room matters as we go to great lengths to ensure out guest’s are comfortable and happy. We Love our resort and constantly looking at ways to improve. Thank you for your feedback

Well, we were stuck in a room right next to the restaurant, thats OK lets give it a try we decided. So here are some of our observations of this flawed decision gleaned over 4 nights.

1. If you expect peace and quiet in this room forget it. We were unlucky enough to have a loud pontificating German expound on his woes to wheover would listen, morning, noon and night - this included well past 10.30pm one evening. There are no notices to respect the privacy of others by reducing noise levels in the restaurant after a certain time.

2. We stayed here 4 nights and the room wasn't cleaned once. Unusual in the extreme.

3. Mangy cats everywhere, OK I love animals but there is a limit. God knows what these creatures do to the native fauna in and around the cottages as well as their discharges. To have so many is irresponsible for the conservation of the local fauna. Frankly scary!

4. If you fancy a cigarette smoke-free breakfast/lunch and you have the misfortune of being in the company of a bunch of antisocial smokers then enjoy the delicious aroma of cigarette smoke wafting through the restaurant as you are eating. This was particularly disgusting - nowhere were there signs to respect other eaters and not smoke during meal times.

5. And yes the smell of smoke could be detected in our room - highly abnoxious. Even the staff found the policy of the owner bizarre in this respect - but apparently she is a smoker too, so take it or leave it obviously.

6. The mattress had obviously seen better days, one doesn't expect much maybe just a mattress with a bit of give!

7. The breakfast was simple but the lunch menu was excellent and Jenny the manager helpful.

8. It is a useful location if you are diving with Tioman Dive Centre which we used and is to be recommended.

All in all this experience could have been so much more pleasurable with a few tweaks to take account of everybody and not just the selfish few who smoke and make unnecessary loud noises.

Hi hkxpat1962, Thank you for your review and sorry that your stay was affected by the actions of one or two others. We would have preferred you contact us directly, however, you have highlighted a couple of key issues and we will make changes to make our small cottage resort even better for future guests. Occasionally some people are not too aware of their effect on others,we have shied away from displaying too many "rules" rather hoping that guests will self regulate, which they usually do. We have been thinking about making the reception/restaurant a no smoking area for sometime now and your review has prompted us to make it official. We agree with you that it would be better for everyone if the communal area was non smoking. We will also display a gentle reminder to respect the stay of other customers and keep noise to a minimum in the evenings. Re the matteress they are all relatively new, firmness is often a matter of taste, however, we will investigate and take action if needed. As for the cats ,they adopted us and we feel we are taking responsibility for them. The oldest cat is 12 years old and the youngest is 5 and they have been sterilised for many years now. We keep the cats well fed and as far as we can see they are not impacting too much on the dense jungle ecosystem of the island. We will implement the changes immediately and hope that any future customers reading this will also acknowledge how their actions affect their fellow guests and act accordingly. Hopefully with these few tweaks , if you do return , your experience will be much better. With Regards Swiss Cottage Team

I had high expectations about this place, considering all the great reviews I had read about it. The higher the expectations, the higher the disappointment… Yes the place is lovely, it’s right on the beach, and the bungalow are convenient BUT:
- The beach is infested with sandflies, and they only have 2 long chairs, so in the end, the beach is not really enjoyable.. I know sand flies is out of control of the Swiss Cottage, but at least they could invest in a few more long chairs so that guests can still enjoy to stay on the beach.
- It is very basic, in terms of comfort and cleanliness could be better.. (there wasn’t even a paper bin in the room)
- Don’t go there is you expect to eat something.. They do have a menu with a few food items, which look very good, but we never got to taste them! Everytime we wanted to order something “no more bread, no more tomatoes, we couldn’t go to the supermarket..” Ok we did stay there during a public holidays, so I can understand that they cannot get all the supplies they would need, but it is not like it’s something unexpected! They know it is a public holiday, and that their hotel is going to be full (which it was), so a little bit of anticipation won’t hurt. This wouldn’t be such a problem if there were a few restaurants around the hotel.. but there aren’t. In the end, we had to go to the Berjaya resort, 15min from there, to get some food.
- The staff was nice, but not very helpful though. When we were asking for advice about when to do a boat trip for example, considering the weather, the answer was basically “it’s up to you”.
The best part was at the end of our stay, when we decided to rent their standing paddle, the hotel only had 2 of them, and we were a group of 6. It was fine with us, we said we will take the 2 they have, we thought we will share it among the few of us who wanted to try. But then the manager told us we couldn’t share the paddle, we pay for 1 person only. This was just ridiculous, given the fact they couldn’t even provide enough for each of us to have our own paddle! We pay per paddle, not by the number of people who will use it! This was really a joke.

All in all, unless you are in search for wild experience, and don’t need much to be happy (not even food), I wouldn’t recommend this place if you want to have a pleasant stay.

Dear Totie, Thank you for your review. Generally we are happy to read about our guest's holiday impressions.Your review is also very significant to us. We agree that having high expectations can have a negative outcome in ones holiday experience. Our cottages are very basic and we like to keep it that way, but cleanliness matters of course. So we appreciate when guest's approach us during their stay, so that we can look into the matter instantly. We hesitate to put bins in the rooms as we live in a tropical environment and try to prevent insects from coming in.There is however a bin just outside your doorstep that gets emptied on a regular basis. We apologise for any mishaps that occurred during your stay. There are several restaurants less than a 5 minute walk away from our premises. It is our endeavour to be helpful and efficient when it comes to responding to our guests needs. We are happy and excited that we are in the planning of providing more outdoor facilities and activities this coming season and are looking forward to the start of the new year. Kind Greetings Swiss Cottage Tioman team

We loved our stay at swiss cottage and originally planned to stay for 3 nights and this turned into 6!

Swiss cottage is a really chilled out place to stay and the owners are lovely people. It is right on the beach in a beautiful location. We had a terrace fan room which was spacious, clean and had a nice balcony to sit on.

There was free tea and coffee and a different breakfast each day that was very tasty.

We took advantage on the Tioman Dive Centre that is on site and did our padi which was great.

There was also a lovely seafood bbq restaurant close by and a duty free shop where you can by cheap alcohol.

Only downside was the sand flies on the beach, you just need to be careful in the late afternoon.

Swiss Cottage is our favourite place we've stayed in Malaysia and we'd love to go back if we get the chance again.

We returned recently from our wonderful 3 week holiday to Malaysia during which we spent 5 nights at Swiss Cottage in the seaview deluxe bungalows. Swiss Cottage was our favourite accommodation of the holiday and although the bungalows wouldn't be considered luxury accommodation they really are excellent by Malaysian standards. The seaview deluxe bungalows (of which there are 2 and they are joined) are really lovely and they have great decks in the front on which to lounge around. Our deck had a bed type thing with continental pillows on which you could lie down. The bungalow next to ours where my sister was staying had a hammock and a table with 2 chairs. Both allowed for good amounts of chilling. The bungalows didn't have airconditioning but they had a large roof fan which worked just as well. My hubby who normally battles without an airconditioner was absolutely fine provided the fan was on. The only slightly negative aspect about the bungalow rooms is that they are situated quite close to the dive centre (well in fact all the bungalows / chalets are) and this meant that sleeping in was not that easy as from about 8am one would hear the clanking of tanks and the general noise from the dive centre. It was never very bad though and so don't let it put you off. Perhaps another negative would be the amount of mozzies in the room. We don't know how, buy our mozzie net was always full of them and in fact on the one night we ended up killing 15 mozzies inside the net.

Unfortunately Stella wasnt around when we were there but Richard (her husband) did an excellent job of checking us in, giving us advice and booking the jungle trek for us. The level of service at Swiss Cottage was really high and all the employees were friendly and pleasant. We also really enjoyed the breakfasts that were served with every morning having something different. Do note that you don't get a choice but rather a set meal is prepared each morning. We found the portion sizes to be adequate and my better half never complained about being hungry. There is also an honesty bar which is a great feature. The fridge is stocked with fruit juices, soft drinks, tonic water, soda water and beers. You can take what you want and merely write it up on the board.

As for the beach, it was pretty good, without being great. I missed the fine white sand of the Perhentians. Also, the snorkeling wasn't very good right in front of Swiss Cottage. There was a fair amount of good, alive coral but not a lot of fish. We had come down from the Perhentians and Kapas island where we had experienced the most amazing snorkeling and so unfortunately Tioman didn't live up.

As for the dive centre, do use the one that is linked to Swiss Cottage as it is great. My sister did 6 dives with that dive school and absolutely loved it. The instructors were all great and very friendly. And here's a shout out to James and Claire who we had a good few beers with on our last night!

As for food and drink, do try the seafood BBQ along the main road towards Tekek village, about 200 meters from Swiss Cottage, maybe even less. You can pop into the duty free bottle store along the way and pick up a good bottle of wine at a decent price to accompany your meal. Also, right next to Swiss Cottage is a great Chinese eatery. Its easy to get to by just walking along the beach. Try their black pepper crab (1kg for MYR35) which was amazing. At night, walk further down the beach (towards the pier) and you will come across a beach bar called Tioman Cabana. They make some mean rum based cocktails and great burgers so definitely give them a try.

As for Tioman itself (and now all the Tioman fans will want to take our their guns), I wasn't blown away by it. I liked it but I didn't love it. Perhaps I had expected too much after all the good things I had heard but I felt a little let down by it. The snorkeling compared to the other islands we had been to did nothing to impress me. In fact, it really wasn't good at all off the beach. When we walked through the area called ABC, we actually got a fright because it looked so unappealing and shabby. The accommodation really didn't look very nice, there was litter lying around and the sea had retracted (being low tide) and it left a pebble studded muck behind. Walking through Tekek village, we also noticed a fair amount of litter, plastic bottles thrown into a green, sludge river etc. My first impressions really were not good. Luckily we arrived at Swiss Cottage which had a great feel to it and we loved our accommodation and that made us feel better. As mentioned, we had spent time in the Perhentians (which although busy, with one resort of top of the next) was very beautiful with great snorkeling and Kapas island (our absolute favourite) and so Tioman just didn't have huge appeal for me. I liked the fact that the island is duty free and so you could get a drink without breaking the bank and I liked the food that we had and our accommodation, but I wasn't blown away by the island itself. Also, the whole ferry experience makes the island a mission to get to and to get out of. The waiting for the tides, hoping that the ferry doesn't get cancelled for no reason etc, all adds a little bit of stress to the trip. Speaking of which, we found Bluewater ferry to be better than expected. After the horror stories that one reads about, they really were pretty good. They left almost on time and both trips felt relatively safe. The trip takes about 1.5 - 2 hours and is relatively flat, although I can imagine that on bad weather days or when the wind is up, the trip might be rather unpleasant as I'm sure the swell can cause some seasickness. The crossing involves a fair amount of time on the open sea i.e. when you can't see any other land. Luckily for us, the ferry trips were pretty smooth.

So, in conclusion, if you are going to visit Tioman, definitely stay at Swiss Cottage as it is lovely and I don't think you will find better accommodation anywhere on the island! As for whether to visit Tioman or not, well that's difficult to answer. I think its a pretty good choice and perhaps just lower your expectations a bit and then maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised. It is a nice island and perhaps if you haven't traveled to many other islands it will tick all the boxes. For me though, I wish we had spent more time in Kapas and on the smaller, lessor known islands.

This is an account of our three-week stay at Swiss cottage. We stayed in aircon rooms with garden view and in the terrace. The Sea view rooms really do have beautiful views, but at the time of writing they did not feature air con, which to me is fine. I would have stayed in fan rooms if we didn't have a baby with us.

Before setting off to Tioman, one must understand three harsh realities that come with any resort or hotel on the island: sandflies on the beach make sunbathing less attractive; there is little food variety; you will have a mediocre wi-fi connection most of the time, which is frustrating, but acceptable connestion speed in off-peak hours. That said, Swiss Cottage manages to be one of our favourite destinations in our four months of touring Southeast Asia. There are a number of reasons:

1) Fantastic vibe. Guests here tend to be relaxed. These are small groups of people, a surprising number of them traveling with young children (we came with a 5-month old), most seemed to be in the 35-year old demographic. There is an honor system drink fridge that is respected by the other guests. We felt safe and comfortable anywhere on the property, and the other guests tended to be very interesting people. You won't regret striking up a conversation if you get the chance.

2) The food. In the morning you will get a different dish from a number of staff choices, which is included with your room rate. We have eaten roti canai, oatmeal & fruit, scrambled egg &toast, tomato & cheese omlette, banana pancakes, as well as french toast. Every day you can order from a number of fruit shakes made in-house, as well as *very good* espresso based drinks, all selling for fair prices. There is free filtered water (hot or cold); it's nice to see it kept free of charge, unlike nearby lodgings that charge small amounts to fill up bottles, which is a hassle. There is free tea (orange pekoe, I believe), and free instant coffee (personally not a fan, but some guests liked it). If you're lucky, there will be some banoffee pie left over. The drink fridge has sodas, some canned juice, soda water, Tiger beer. Sometimes Hoegaarden and/or Heineken. Again, all selling for fair prices.

You can order toasted cheese+ tomato+oregano buns for RM10, up to early afternoon. After that, you need to find food elsewhere in Tekek.

3) Location. We walked from the airport, to the surprise of many. We travel light, so we chose to walk. It took us 15 minutes to walk there. Most suggest to take a cab. I wouldn't pay more than RM 10 for the ride (total fare), your mileage may vary. This part of Tioman Island is called Tekek. It is very small, but seemingly larger than the other dozen or so villages on the island. It has a number of restaurants (mostly malay food, some chinese, and one wonderful beach bar called Cabana, our favourite, ask for veggie or chicken burger), a couple of liquor stores, small shops, a grocery store with good quality fruit and veggies, subject to availability after boats bring cargo to town, and one large general store where most tourists go to overpay for stuff.

The main reason we liked the location is for the diving and snorkeling. It isn't the best snorkeling on the island, but dang if it isn't a solid 9/10. Our room, not being a 'sea view' was still only 15 meters from the water. The best part, in our opinion, is the dive shop located right on the property, Tioman Dive Centre. This is one of two excellently run dive shops we had been to on the island (the other was Eco-Divers), and TDC was our favourite.

4) The management. Richard and Stella are passionate about their inn, and it shows in their work. Yes, there are bugs, the aircon doesn't always work perfectly (ours lacked a remote control. It was full-blast cold or nothing). But they excel at catering to their crowd. We never felt overwhelmed by other groups of tourists, like we may have at the nearby Berjaya resort, nor were we subject to peddling of goods while on the property. They've created the relaxed, chill atmosphere that we needed to contrast our forays into tourist hotspots elsewhere in Asia.

I would not recommend this place for groups of more than 6 or 8 people, because it would alter the experience for everyone. I do not recommend Tioman Island in general to vegetarians, where restaurants serve "veggie rice" with chicken and fish regardless, though Swiss Cottage will do their best to accommodate you at breakfast time. I would not recommend Swiss Cottage for high maintenance guests who need total perfection or their money back (they won't get it anyway).

If you're looking for a dive shop, this is your place. Other dive shops in ABC village may be more popular, but the area has less going for it than Tekek where Swiss Cottage is located.

In summary: If you don't mind sleeping in a bugnet, what you sacrifice in creature comfort you will gain triplicate in relaxation and atmosphere. This was one of the top 3 lodgings out of over 20 we've stayed at in Southeast Asia.

A combination of a beautiful place, fine rooms, and friendly hosts (Richard and Stella) made our 6-night stay here a delight. We didn't get the beach chalets, but it didn't matter - the terrace rooms are nice. An interesting and eclectic set of fellow travellers were good value also! Our boat charter and snorkling trips were organised for us, breakfasts were varied and great, and the dive shop onsite is a big bonus. And the cats are fun. Overall Swiss Cottage is beaut! Would not hesitate to return! Thanks guys!

We stayed for 4 days 3 nights and really enjoyed ourselves in Tioman. Stella & Richard greeted us upon arrival and ask us if were would like a drink. They were very welcoming and friendly! The place was comfy and you'll feel homely. Breakfast was nice. They served different kinds of breakfast every single day. We stayed in the Terrace non A/C room and I must say I was impressed though it was simple. It was really nice and comfortable for the two of us. There's hot shower too! But beware of mosquitoes at night, they'll bite you but not to worry as there are mosquitoes nets in the room. Cat lovers, this is the place for you. (: Swiss cottage is located at the end of kampung tekek so you either have to walk from the jetty which is quite a distance or you can take a taxi which prolly gonna take up only 5 mins, so I suggest its better to walk. There's restaurants if you would like to eat and stuffs but I would suggest you head down to Rozita's food place, its VERY nice. The food, the drinks, I would highly recommend it! There's bike for rental somewhere near swiss cottage area too so its easy for people to get around without having to spend much $$ on taxi's or renting a moped. Overall it was a nice place to stay! Highly recommend! (:

Hi Hakim, Glad you enjoyed yourselves in Tioman, despite the impressive rain showers we had when you arrived. The mosquitoes can get nasty after the rain but we are glad the nets helped. There is also a spray called OFF that you can buy on the island which I personally find most effective. But hopefully your next stay will not involve too many mosquitoes. The Bicycles are definitely the best way to explore the village and Rosita is yummy, friendly and extremely affordable. Thanks for this review and the good advise. We appreciate it and others will too. Hope to welcome you here again soon. Kind greetings From all of us!

We stayed at Swiss Cottage for two weeks in May this year and absolutely loved it. So much actually, that we extended our stay and made it our 'home' to contemplate the end of our 6 month trip through Asia.

It was exactly what we were looking for: a quiet, personal, simple place right by the beach. The grounds are beautiful and it's clear a lot of love and care continues to be put into the place by the lovely owners Stella and Richard.

We stayed in the simplest room type - the Longhouse fan room. We were very comfortable; with the fan on and a breeze from the ocean we didn't miss the aircon. While the room and bathroom are basic, they have all you need and are, most importantly, very clean. Room is cleaned on request during longer stays, which worked fine for us.

Despite its location by the beach and jungle, we never found any creepy crawlies in our room (bar the ever present mozzies). What you do have is a nice veranda overlooking the garden and patio doors opening up onto it. If you want a bit more privacy or room space, you may want to opt for the beachfront properties which are beautiful and come with a few more mod cons.

Mind you- if you are used to uber-organised resorts, this place might not be for you: not every tiny detail is perfect, but it's a place with personality and heart. We spent many days chatting away with other guests, staff or petting some of the resident cats. Swiss Cottage fosters a very open and welcoming atmosphere. At the same time, if you prefer keeping to yourself you can easily do that- neither staff nor cats will bother you.

Breakfast was tasty, filling and I enjoyed that we got a different dish every day.

The beach is beautiful (albeit not white) and very quiet; you can also cheaply rent snorkels or go on boat tours with the friendly Wasabi exploring the area. Diving with the on-site Tioman Dive Center was also fantastic (think turtles, reefs sharks and professional staff).

While the Island is pretty quiet (don't expect a big choice of nightlife), you can find some good local restaurants in walking distance to Swiss Cottage. Alternatively try ABC for some pizza; Swiss Cottage can easily call a taxi if the 40 min walk doesn't appeal. Tioman is a gorgeous place that has retained its friendly, laid-back feel. Unless you're on the ferry you probably won't see hordes of other tourists, at least not when you stay in Swiss Cottage.

Overall Swiss Cottage was the perfect place for us- if you're looking for similar things it's a great choice. We'd love to come back!

Hello Summer. I would suggest that you contact Swiss Cottage directly. I am just a traveller who visited last year. I have no idea how much the chalets are this year. Thanks Kim
