We stayed here back in July 2015 (have had to put July 2017 as it's a while back) as a group of four, having booked the B&B's only two bedrooms 8 months previously, the "Suite" (my two female friends) and the "Double" (my boyfriend and me). Upon being greeted by the owner, we were told that my two friends' suite was ready but that ours wasn't ready yet, so we were ushered out to the pool in the back garden and given a refreshing drink. So far so good. We decided to take a dip in the pool while we were waiting and as we got in, a young couple and their baby came outside to join us. "Funny", I thought, "I wonder where they're staying as there are only two rooms". The lady comes into the garden 45 minutes later and tells us the room is ready, and shows us into a room that is NOT the "Double" that I booked on the website - if anything it is a quadruple, for there are two double beds in it! More to the point, the room was very clearly lived in by someone. "Erm," I say, "this isn't what I booked on the website", to which the lady responds innocently, "yes it is". She then goes on to say that when the B&B is overbooked, she rents out her daughter's room (the room in which we were were standing). When I asked to stay in the room that I had booked on the website, she responded (as I had feared), that the young family were already staying in it. What could we do? Ribérac is a small village, we were there for a friend's wedding and we had nowhere else to stay, so we had to put up with it. I made sure that the lady could see I was not happy (my boyfriend doesn't speak French so this was all a bit confusing for him). The room didn't feel clean, we didn't feel like we could spread out in it or unpack our stuff because a) there was no lock and b) the daughter kept coming in to get her things whenever we were out. The bathroom had loose tiles on the floor - no health and safety and of course, the drawers and surfaces were filled with the daughter's stuff, nail varnishes, perfumes, cosmetics, used razors. There was no curtain or screen around the bath and no attachment to fix the shower head to the wall so showering was messy. There was also no curtain on the window or frosted glass so I literally felt like I was showering in front of the world. I know that probably no-one could see, it it's these small comforts that you look for when staying in a B&B or hotel - an element of privacy! On both nights, when we returned from dinner and drinks and the wedding, we could hear the two kids in the bedroom next-door talking and giggling - presumably the daughter had had to bunk with her brother because we were in her room, and from the sounds of it, she wasn't mad keen on it either. It's not exactly ideal feeling like you're stealing someone's room against their wishes and paying for the privilege. On the last morning we were so relieved to be on our way, but absolutely adamant that we would not be paying the full price for our unpleasant stay. It was like the woman knew that we would kick off, because she was there waiting at the bottom of the stairs for us when we came down with our suitcases, to ask us if we'd enjoyed our stay. When I said no, that it wasn't what I had booked, and that I hadn't signed up to stay in her daughter's room and feel like I couldn't even relax there, she smiled as if I was being silly and said that it was what I'd booked. I responded that I didn't think that we should be expected to pay the full price for our stay and that my boyfriend and I would not be prepared to pay the remaining 50% that we owed. It was at that point that the smile came off her face and she got quite nasty, saying that she would get her partner out to sort things out if I felt that we didn't need to pay the full amount. My boyfriend was completely bemused, not understanding the exchange at all, but could tell that things had taken a turn for the worse. As she called for her partner, telling him in a raised voice that we were refusing to pay, my boyfriend stuffed the money in her hand and gestured for me to go before the partner came out, and we hopped quite quickly into our mate's car to head off to the train station, before she could say another word. I have been meaning to leave this review for years as this experience has always stayed with me and I feel it needs to be shared. Do NOT stay here, it's a total waste of money and if you are like we were, you won't get what you paid for.…
