We arrived in early August, when seemingly the whole of the UK had been parched brown by the punishing heat and lack of rain. Yet this place, set in a secluded valley, was miraculously green. The owners explained that it was because of the small river that runs beside the site, and the fact they get a lot of dew in the mornings.
We stayed in their furnished bell tent, which comes with a proper bed and duvet, and was very spacious. Included in the price for the furnished bell tent is a sort of big shed which functions as a kitchen. A 2-ring hob, fridge, pots, pans, cutlery and crockery are included.
This furnished option is super-convenient if you don't have much camping gear or, like us, you have flown in from a different country. There are also a couple of little huts available for rent, which look very nice.
The general site facilities are very clean and functional, there's a big communal fridge you can put your stuff in, which also makes ice on demand, along with a store of kids' games which you are free to borrow. Also, you can borrow a fire pit, again without charge. You just need to buy the logs if you didn't bring your own .
The owners are friendly and helpful, and went above and beyond to help me out when I had some trouble with my return plane tickets.
Overall, highly recommended. My one piece of advice would be to bring some nice warm sleeping gear, as the mercury drops pretty rapidly at night.

Ynysfaen is the perfect antidote to busy 21st century living! A small, peaceful and immaculately cared for campsite - if you like a background noise of only birdsong and babbling river, you will love Ynysfaen! Elaine and Duncan are so very friendly, welcoming and thoughtful - and they work incredibly hard to make this one of the best sites we have ever visited. It is in a lovely spot for visiting the National Park, and the walking in this area is spectacular (especially when the sun is shining!). We would 100% recommend - and will most definitely be returning for another 'detox'! Bliss!
Thank you, Elaine and Duncan, for sharing your little slice of paradise!

Saw ynysfaen on a website and it looked and sounded very much the kind of site we enjoy so booked a couple of nights.
The site photos didn't even do it justice, it is a beautiful site on the banks of the river Usk, it is immaculately maintained and has a very friendly and relaxed vibe.
When you arrive the fantastic hosts Elaine and Duncan give you a great welcome, and check how things are every day, their hosting style is what gives the place it's relaxed, laid back feeling.
The site is very flat for pitching and has lovely touches everywhere, it's very pretty. The toilet/shower block is the most immaculate and cleanest I have encountered on any site, all toilets and showers are enclosed rather than cubicles giving you privacy.
For £5 you can buy a bucket of wood or charcoal, and when you purchase them you can also borrow a firepit and/or BBQ for free, they ask you purchase from them as it is quality wood that burns well, has minimal smoke and gives great heat (I usually burn two bags of kiln dried logs each evening but one of their buckets lasted as long). It is purchased with an honesty box so you can go back and get more if you require at anytime of day.
They also leave an honesty box for eggs laid by their chickens, never had proper farm eggs before and what a difference to supermarket ones (you can even meet the chickens).
The site is very quiet and tucked out of the way but with easy access to Brecon, about 25 minutes away and all the places you can visit from there, the loudest sounds you hear are birds (lots of red kites flying around), sheep (it is wales after all) and the river bubbling about the edge.
The pitches are very well spaced, the camping field accomadating 7 pitches in an area most sites that most would have three times the amount plus cars, you really have space to yourself, also cars aren't allowed on the camping field giving it a much more open and pleasant look (and maintaining the immaculate grass). On my photos only two more tents arrived later and the site was at capacity, that's how much space there is, once the site was full picture number two shows my pitch, how's that for room!
Due to the area there is no mobile signal or WiFi, which we found strangely nice and relaxing.
There is a great kitchen area with a range items you can borrow if you had forgotten anything, I had forgotten coffee cups so was glad of it, and a huge fridge/freezer with plenty of room for everyone to use (making no EHU an non issue) ice cubes automatically dispensed, again this is very clean and well maintained.
We booked to return before we had even left, and really didn't want to leave but life gets in the way of a longer stay.
It's in a black sky area so the night sky is amazing if you can stay awake late enough, we couldn't, half ten and I was flat out, but was told it was amazing the next morning.
To summarise if you want to stay on a very friendly, beautiful sites with the kindest and most considerate hosts, don't hesitate book now, you won't regret it.

We had a wonderful stay at the Shepherd's Hut. The environment was serene, offering a peaceful retreat amidst nature. The toilets and showers were exceptionally well-maintained and spotlessly clean. I highly recommend this campsite for anyone seeking tranquility and top-notch facilities. I would definitely visit again.

The warm and friendly welcome from Elaine was lovely, she was extremely helpful and made me feel like an old friend. Stopping by the tent each morning to ask if I was ok as a first time solo camper I really appreciated this. Duncan is just as friendly and considerate as he carries out maintenance, checking that he wasn’t disturbing the peace as he added the finishing touches to the newly built lodge. Which looks amazing!!!
The toilet and shower facilities are extremely well kept and clean. No matter what time of day they smell fresh and sparkle, as does the kitchen facility. Sanitiser and cleaning sprays are available in all areas. The eco vibe is obvious throughout the site and hosts an excellent recycling system.
A truly magical star filled sky at night is enhanced by the peaceful and quiet ambiance. Camping at Ynysfaen is peaceful and perfect !

Well what can Say about this little Gem
The owners Elaine and Duncan have thought of everything.
Myself and my husband spent the weekend here and have already booked in again over the summer with the children.
The pitches are spacious and the grass is very well maintained, there's around 8 tents on the field so is still quite private.
The Field boasts beautiful scenery and part of the river Usk runs at the back of the field along with a little path and seats made from trees trucks so you can enjoy the peaceful calm of the river and wildlife.
The campsite has hens on site, which means you get to enjoy freshly laid eggs for breakfast at a very reasonable 1.50 for 6 if you wish.
No cars allowed on the field to help maintain the grass (it's worth it)
So you park your car at front and you grab a wheel barrow provided and wheel your stuff to the plot, great fun for the kids.
We arrived a tad earlier than normal check (agreed with the owners) around 10am and we were shown around straight away,
the toilets and showers hadn't been cleaned yet because cleaning is around 11am,
I couldn't believe how spotless they were, the cleanest showers and toilets I have ever used on on a campsite, you could eat off the floors.
The little touches in the toilets eg pads for women's problems in case you get caught short is just ideal.
There's a fantastic kitchen area, again spotless for cleaning your dishes along with a huge ice chest and an American fridge, but for me the little hanging pots with fresh herbs in to take for cooking (which were free by the way) made me smile.
If you're worried about covid don't be
Hand sanitiser everywhere and I mean everywhere.
There's also games for the kids and adults to use like croquet and bowls, again complimentary so have fun but respect they aren't yours to ruin or keep.
Fire pits are free to use and wood is £5.00 to which there is a little honesty box to pop your money in too.
There's also a tap for your water buts however this isn't just any old water it's Brecon spring water and tastes gorgeous.
Great walks and lots of wildlife near by.
I would recommend one or two citronella candles to just keep the files away as I would with most campsites however one evening Elaine and Duncan came around with free insense sticks.
Such a wonderful place ran by a wonderful couple
Cannot wait to get back.
Thank you again both.
Wish TA would let me put up more pictures

This campsite is run by some of the friendliest site owners I’ve met. Unperturbed by any of our slightly obscure requests/queries (including a child’s request to barbecue one of their chickens!) Elaine and Duncan absolutely went the extra mile to make our stay one to remember, even finding our missing car keys when we were absolutely convinced they had been lost forever - magic powers!
The site was immaculately tended, incredibly clean and well appointed. Thoughtful touches would make anyone feel welcome and if the weather hadn’t been against us we would certainly have stayed on. There’s nothing I think they can improve here, they are situated in a stunning location and have made the absolute best of it with their site. We’ll certainly return, and highly recommend it!

We just spent the bank holiday here as a family with our dog. We were blown away by the camp site. The facilities are out of this world! So clean and everything has been thought out and considered. There is a huge fridge which guests can use. Choose your shelf, write your name on the board and keep your food and drinks nicely chilled. Showers and toilets are so clean and so well maintained. Duncan and Elaine who run the site are so friendly. Every evening they walk around the site to chat to their guests and handed out citronella incense sticks. There are fire pits and BBQ’s to hire too. At night when the stars come out….wow….I have never seen a sky like it. So beautiful. All round the site, fire pits are going and people are sitting out looking at the stars. It’s not crowded either. They pride themselves on taking fewer bookings so people can have lots of space. Cara are left in the car park so no worrying about being knocked over with people driving in and out. Very environmentally friendly too. We will definitely be going back.

Having camped around the world, we said this was the BEST we have ever stayed at. You wanted for nothing, every single extra touch was there at no cost. Pitch was clean, well laid out, not crowded at all, environmentally friendly, by a little stream and on a site of special scientific interest. There is room for 2 caravans or Motorhomes, a shepherd's hut and a bell tent for those who don't want a tent. The toilets and showers are immaculate, each with a heater in them and a really good size. Fresh spring water, eggs, herbs and firewood and bbqs available. There was even a first aid kit available in the shower room and outside on the wall a defibrillator should anyone have the unfortunate need for it.
We will be back to visit Elaine and Duncan's gorgeous site, especially as they are situated in the Brecon Beacons and there were so many cycling and waking trails to do.
100 out of 100 with absolutely not a single negative.

What an amazing four night camping experience at this gorgeous rural idyll. It is certainly the place to relax and unwind - a total detox 😀 with the bonus of no vehicles permitted on the camping field. Elaine and Duncan were so friendly and welcoming with a personal tour upon arrival and whilst there nothing was ever too much trouble. The facilities are well appointed (they’ve thought of everything) and immaculate. The site is in a lovely peaceful setting alongside the River Usk where they are creating their own little wildlife haven. We spent relaxed mornings and evenings listening to and watching an abundance of bird activity. As well as the usual garden birds we watched the buzzards and red kites soaring overhead, a pair of mistle thrushes passing through, an adult woodpecker feeding its young, a nuthatch and treecreeper alongside the river and the most entertaining were the pied flycatchers swooping upon insects and taking back to their young - both in the branches and in the bird box behind our tent! This peaceful campsite has to go down as the best we’ve stayed on in several decades of camping. We definitely plan to return 😀.
