I really recommend this hostel if you would love to do some hikes in the Brecon Beacons! The staff was unbelievable friendly, everything was very clean, the beds are nice and the rooms had a nice temperature.
Three little facts: I don’t know if it was just the day I was there or it is in general, but there isn’t a lot of youth there. Almost everybody was 30y or above or a family with children. I really didn’t mind as everybody was very friendly and respectful, but if you go to hostels to meet young people, it could be possible that there are none 😅.
The second ‘fact’ is that there is free breakfast as well. If you book a room, you can have free, but simple, breakfast like cornflakes, toast with jam, little croissants and chocolade breads(?), coffee and tea & some juice. I think this wasn’t really clearly mentioned on the website, so I’ve bought an English breakfast in advance. So if you don’t want to spend extra money, you’ll still be able to eat something before you go on an adventure : )
The last fact is that, even tho you only can check in at 17h, if you arrive early, you could drop your bags in the common room and go on a hike. It isn’t really guarded all the time, but I had the feeling the place and people there were very trustworthy!

We turned up to a very warm welcome. The staff were accomodating and the whole place felt homely.
This particular YHA (Brecon Beacons) had just reopened after a refurb. And itvwas great to see it was warm and wel oming with a nice fire in the common room.
Couldnt ask for any more. Well done YHA for doing what you do.
If you are a person who wants silver service and large rooms this isnt the place for you. However if you are looking for a friendly people, warm, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, meeting like minded people, amazing staff, always in the ideal setting for exploring then this is the place for you.

lovely location in the countryside, remote enough to have the most incredible views of the starry sky. We loved our landpod and the welcome we received. Access and parking were a bit of a challenge (typically with YHA), but the staff assisted and we could park right beside our landpod, which was awesome as I was travelling with young children. All in all, an outstanding location and we loved waking to the sounds of swallows chirping from their nests under the eaves.

I'd like to thank John personally , He's just taken over the managerial role here couple of weeks ago. Nothing was to much trouble, he was very accommodating with all his guests during our mini break . The hostel is located in the middle of nowhere, and Its surrounded by spectacular views.
The phone signal and WiFi isn't easily available , John helped me find post codes ect on computer for different locations, so it wasnt that big of an issue. The top carpark has phone signal if needed .
Our Bedroom was very small for 2 people sharing 3 nights stay, 6ft 5ft room that had small bunk bed and a sink , I know the building is an old farm house conversion, but my friend has alot of health issues, It wouldnt be a bad stay as single room for 1 , but for 2 people a wee bit cramped.
Thankyou John made our 3 nights stay very comfortable , as he did move us to a different location in the hostel .
You wont be disappointed with the location , building, staff , The Kitchen was extremely fully equipped, with everything you'd expect at a beautiful Hostel.
We Most certainly will be returning to visit again soon this year . Thanks again John and all other staff members , your all doing an excellent , amazing job,
Oh not forgetting the log burner lit in the evening just perfect comfatable and relaxing x Cheers x

Stayed here for 9 days as i was working in the local area. I booked a private room with the 25% discount which brought it to about £40 a night. The room was tiny maybe 8 feet by about 7feet.

The bunk beds were too small which I couldn't actually lay flat on which made sleeping difficult and at 5 11'' I kept thinking they must be child beds or something, the room felt like i was in prison.

On my last day it had snowed which resulted in me not being able to drive up the hill of the entrance, they had not thought ahead of gritting the road which left about 5 guests stranded and me missing out on work.

Other minor things were no spot light when it got dark was an annoyance as i had to walk to the car with the torch on just to know where i was going.

There was no Wifi and no signal in the building so any calls you wanted to make you'd have to stand outside in the rain as it's always raining at that time of year.

Staff were friendly and the kitchen area was very useful for making your own meals.

I hate to complain but i just think it was over priced for what i got regardless of it being a hostel you should not charge hotel prices as without the discount it would have been around £54 a night.

For one nigh stay i'd recommend, anything more i'd get a hotel.

The private room was tiny and totally overpriced. There was no window, only a skylight that I couldn't open as it rained at night.
The bunk bed legs were cut off so it would fit in the low ceiling, so being on the bottom bunk was like sleeping on the floor. There wasn't really room for two people with two sets of baggage, I was very thankful to be solo.
I paid £85/night for this, because it was surge weekend rate. This is not value for money.

There is no WIFI and no phone reception so you can not organise anything during the evenings. Buses are infrequent - every two hours on sundays. This is not a good place if you are without a car. The bathrooms and toilets were clean, as was the shared kitchen. The continental breakfast was nice.

The nature and hills in the area is beautiful. Very nice location if you have a car as you can nip up to Pen y Fan, then drive to another walk or town afterwards. But if on foot, options are very limited.

If you go, make sure you download and take maps before arriving. The YHA usually have paper printouts of local hikes, but not here. The staff didn't have much local knowledge or advice to offer, so do your research.

Wonderful trip over the Christmas holiday itself visiting yha Brecon with our two teens and dog. We enjoyed hillwalking and the pod was clean and perfect to come back to after a day out. The drying room was great, staff helpful and even the little dog we’d brought with us was made to feel welcome. Plus our kids loved the breakfast!

Our family of 2 adults and 4 teenagers had a great couple of days here - lovely family room, friendly staff and amazing location in the middle of the beacons.

Our one disappointment was the size of the kitchen. When we came here 6 years ago the kitchen facilities, although not as modern, were much more extensive, and allowed for many people cooking and eating together, which made a great atmosphere. Now there's just one kitchen which, even without Covid restrictions, can't really fit more than 6 people cooking, and certainly not eating. So you feel a real pressure to cook, eat, get out. We and other guests couldn't help feeling we're being pushed to buy the provided meals, which aren't cheap. Such a shame as the social aspect and the ability to eat on a budget are so central to youth hostelling.

So, please could you look into extending/adding kitchen facilities?

Hi thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I’m sorry that you felt under pressure but we have to follow Welsh Covid rules in order to keep both our guests and our staff safe - this is why we have maximum capacity in place in the self catering kitchen. Hopefully soon we will be able to open both of our self catering kitchens but due to staff shortages in hospitality and a more extensive cleaning regime we are unable to open both self catering kitchens at this moment in time. We look forward to greeting you again in the future and improving on your experience with us.

We stayed in a wooden pod and it was super cosy and comfortable! 2 single beds and 1 double bed (double bed low to the ground), 2 sockets with 2 plug spaces each and an electric heater and dehumidifier. Skylight windows and blackout blinds were a bonus! There was limited signal but we were able to make calls when required (Vodafone/EE) and we enjoyed switching off and relaxing without technology for a few days. The hostel staff were amazing and gave us loads of advice for local exploring. There is a quite a steep walk down from the main car park, but there are a couple of accessible parking spaces near the Reception. The shared kitchen area was absolutely spotless and even our toilet/shower area had been cleaned midway through our stay which was lovely. We'll be back!

Located just off the main road through the Brecon Beacons it is easy to arrive by bus and do walks from the doorstep.
Dorm room as a sufficient, comfy bed and close to bathrooms. Pretty gardens with stunning views and nice communal rooms.
Food was good but not much choice for the evening meal, I would suggest booking in advance as some people checking in at 7 pm could not get food. Not good if you have arrived by bus!
