Travellers' Choice
Quietly tucked away on the top of a hill in rural Africa and, at the same time, located in the very heart of the Northern Tanzania safari circuit Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge breathes the atmosphere of true Africa. The lodge is built with indigenous hardwood and in traditional African style. It is in complete harmony with its surroundings. Yet, its spacious set up, personal and friendly service and its finishing touches, such as cozy sofas around the fireplace and warm decorative details, provide a perfectly balanced luxury. With only fifteen individual tents, Rhotia Valley has an intimate charm. Each of the comfortable tented houses has its own veranda with splendid view. The bathrooms are provided with hot and cold running water, shower and flush toilet. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served in our open dining area. Most of the vegetables and all the herbs are grown in our own garden. Daily we bake fresh bread in our Bakery. Moreover, we produce butter from the milk produced by our own cows. Facilities: - Swimming pool with panoramic view. - Wifi is available in the common dining area. - Conference Room fully equipped with beamer and flipchart. Rhotia Valley is more than a lodge. It is completed embedded in the community of Rhotia. Rhotia Valley consists of the Tented Lodge and, on the opposite hill, a CHILDREN'S HOME. Its aim is to give support to the people of the Rhotia area, all the staff and the children in the Home are from the local area. TWO HILLS, ONE GOAL!

My partner and I stayed here in our way to Ngorongoro Crater for a couple of nights. My favourite aspect of the lodge is the communal area with its beautiful view and large stone fireplace to keep guests warm on the slightly cooler nights (due to the altitude). The food was delicious and the staff very welcoming. The views from the tents are stunning and they have a lovely herb/spice garden on site which they use for local cooking. A very nice touch. Would definitely stay here again.

Waking up in the morning and being overwhelmed by the spectacular view over the valley from your porch is an incredible start of your day. If you're lucky you are even able to spot some wildlife as well. Another reason why I like this place so much is its location. It is close to Ngorongoro National Park and Manyara National Park, two beautiful parks with tons of wildlife! When you're back from your day trip the staff is always ready to give you a warm welcome, prepare some nice food, based on the local kitchen. Then you can finish your day with some drinks at the bar with its spectacular view or you can enjoy the privacy of your tastefully decorated tent.

The tents are nice but the main lodge is lovely! The food was great and I loved the kittens roaming around the entry. Associated with a children's home and part of your accommodation fee supportable that effort. Most orphanages in Tanzania are operated with some pretty unsavory practices, but the owners of Rhotia Valley seemed to genuinely want to give these kids a shot at an education. Location is quite remote, so maybe batter for a stay before/after Ngorongoro.

We stayed at Rhotia Valley Lodge for 2 nights on our visit to Ngorongoro. On arrival, we had the chance to meet the Dutch owners who were very sweet and spoke to us about their journey. We were then quickly checked in to our tent (#3) and wanted to have a quick shower as they promised hot water all day. We waited for about 10 mins and there was none. We then gave up and headed for dinner. The restaurant is very European in its ambience and is a beautiful place to be. Each table has a set menu and is served with healthy portions of fresh fruit and juice. The food was scrumptious and we enjoyed it. The next morning they made aloo (potato) parathas for us (since we hail from India) and had served us half a portion each and then ran out of it. We asked for more and they said it'll take a while and we had to wait. Since we were getting late for our Safari, we left. That evening there was a pretty intense storm with heavy winds and rains and the windows were not down as part of the turndown service and the beds were soaked. Luckily we were only 3 in a room for 4 and made do with the other beds. Overall, it's a beautiful, homely property. They serve great food too but the hot water needs to be fixed and the service needs to improve. If someone had just told that we need to inform the staff about food portions or pulling the curtains down, it would've greatly improved our experience. Take care of these and you'll yourself the best stay at Rhotia Valley

Rhotia Valley is not only a beautiful lodge, with a stylish setting and a very good service, located in an authentic rural area. Besides the above there is a fabulous humanitarian purpose, set up by Marisa and Joost, two courageous Dutch former doctors. They put all their energy and money into creating an orphanage for almost 50 children of the valley. Both the lodge and the orphanage are eco-friendly, run on solar panels and batteries, with their own well for clean water...
