I found St. Catherine's Monastery when searching for a place for three colleagues and myself to stay in Karatu. The Monastery is relaxed and peaceful, the local environment is beautiful. There is a helpful and friendly team of staff who work within the guesthouse area, the nuns are also involved, equally friendly, and inquisitive. As you would expect the guesthouse is spotlessly clean. The food was excellent. On arrival tea and coffee was available, with homemade biscuits. Dinner consisted of a variety dishes served in a buffet style - tasty and fresh. Herman, the chef, was rightfully proud of his food, it was excellent. For the thirsty guest, alcoholic drinks are available for purchase. Breakfast again was a variety of dishes with fresh omelettes cooked to order. I had a lovely time staying at the guesthouse and would highly recommend it to others. The guesthouse staff and nuns provide a wonderful service. For those booking directly, a single room is 65 USD full board, there is flexibility to pay in cash or directly into their bank account. If you can get in contact with the guesthouse manager Japhet through WhatsApp this is the easiest, and quickest, way of booking the rooms.…
I wished we had gotten their information as we want to return !!! We just loved it so so much If anyone has their phone or email which is better please let me know ... Loved it - lovely food from their garden - the sisters are so happy
The welcome you receive in the monastery is second to none and they do all they can to make you feel at home. The guesthouse is situated just outside the Ngorongoro Crater and provides an excellent, lower cost option in contrast to the eye-watering prices inside the crater. It also of offers a welcome alternative to the many foreign-owned hotels and lodges, and give visitors an opportunity to directly support a local community. The guesthouse has over twenty rooms and is extremely clean and comfortable. Rooms are simple, clean and en-suite. This is a sustainable community where almost everything you eat has been produced on the monastery farm, including honey and coffee which you can buy to take home. The money generated from the guesthouse goes to support local people. Currently, the monastery is funding the schooling for a number of orphans and providing cooked food for the nursery children at the nearby school. Members of the community will take guests on tours of the local area, including the farm, primary school and coffee plantation. Whilst this is a monastery, there is absolutely no obligation to attend services unless you wish to. I would recommend this guesthouse to anyone looking for an insight into local life, and a reasonably priced place to stay within a very short distance of some of the best national parks on the continent.…
We stayed at St Catherines for two nights. We were three adults and three kids 7, 4 and 3. St Catherines is located outside of Karatu and just 5 minutes from the Ngorongroro park gate. Its location is quiet and peaceful. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food was excellent. We appreciated the way they accommodated our family. This is an excellent choice for a budget conscious family.
The hotel is very quiet and peaceful. It is inside a monastery, so it is nuns running the hotel. They were very nice and friendly. All meals were included in the price. It is located near the gate to Ngorongoro national park. All in all a good experience :)
