Very reasonably priced adventure lodge far off the beaten path. We had to drive 7 miles on a dirt road to get here, but quickly fell in love. I was very concerned about our lack of air conditioning, but we were given 2 floor fans in addition to the ceiling fan and it was very comfortable. The breakfast and lunch options were fine-but the dinner was incredible. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There is a tour coordinator who will arrange tours. We hiked to the waterfall, swam in the river and took the sustainability tour- which blew my mind. Beautiful and comfortable rooms with private patios.

This was our first stay but many guests were returning for multiple visits and I know why. The staff and location are perfect. The natural beauty of the location cannot be beat. The options for free included activities and add-on activities are legion. From hikes to bird watching, river tubing, kayaking, swimming, rope swing, massages, drinks, food, hammocks, etc. the staff were amazing and the food so exciting and fun!!! Every night an affordable 4 course chef-designed menu (with veggie options and dietary adjustments possible. One night I got the steak without a steak because the side vegetables were so delicious) much of the food (chicken tilapia, fruit, vegetables) are grown on site at the farm. The staff also helps arrange drivers for side trips. I went to Tikal! My only minor complain is the eco lodge rooms are spread out a lot of walking, the rooms would be convenient if they had more outlets and more fans ( we did not stay in the one riverside air conditioned unit but in one of the many non-ac rooms) Our room was clean with a great spacious shower that let you watch the jungle and river while bathing! Highly recommend!!!!

My sister and I spent a week at Black Rock Lodge and could have stayed even longer! During the planning phase and prior to our arrival, communications with the lodge, particularly with Jorge, was prompt, professional and friendly. The entire staff was amazing! Staff from housekeeping, the restaurant and bar, the concierges, front desk, maintenance, landscaping and tour guides were all so helpful and friendly. Whatever you want to do, they make it happen! Our main reason for visiting BRL was for the birding and it did not disappoint! We saw so many beautiful and unusual species, most within a few miles of the lodge. About half-way through our visit we went on a birding expedition with Isaias and he asked what we still wanted to see. We gave him a long list, thinking we were being unreasonable, but Isaias found us about 80% of the list plus many more we weren't expecting! We went on several off-site excursions and each time the guide was professional, extremely knowledgeable and well-spoken, explaining everything we were seeing. And spotting birds for us all along the way! We did the morning bird walk with Victor, canoed the Barton Creek Cave with Lloyd, explored the Mayan ruins at Xunantunich with Roque (and had a bat falcon fly over when we were at the top of the tallest monument!), kayaked down the river for lunch at Sweet Songs Lodge and a tour of the Belize Botanical Gardens with Lloyd, did a night drive with Henery, went to the Belize Zoo with Lloyd on our way in from the airport, did some hiking on our own and ended the week with massages by the river. It was heaven! The spring-fed pool is the perfect place to cool off after a hot day, followed by a frosty drink at the bar. The food was always delicious and healthy and the atmosphere warm and inviting. The entire property was very well kept and clean. Transportation to and from the airport was educational and on-time. Again spotting birds along the way! This is definitely a birder's paradise, but also an awesome place to just get away into nature and enjoy the peace of the jungle.

We stayed with our two teen girls at Black Rock Lodge for 4 nights/5 days. It was amazing, truly. The staff was phenomenal, food top notch, guides incredibly friendly, professional, knowledgeable. We felt like we were their only guests (and we weren't). Black Rock Lodge is an eco-friendly lodge, and they are proud of it and eager to show you what they do on their sustainability tour (complimentary). Highlights of our trip included guided tours to Xunantunich, canoeing Barton Creek cave, a bird tour, and tubing down the Macal River. We loved all the wildlife and the very well-manicured grounds. They take pride in their work to maintain the property and serve their guests. The cabin we stayed in was also wonderful with great views. This was a great family vacation, but we also saw couples and singles as well. It is a small location, so they are able to give you personalized attention. They were also wonderful to work with ahead of time with the many questions we had and arranged transportation for us. We will be back!

My husband and I stayed at Black Rock Lodge for five nights in late June. The entire experience was nothing short of amazing and extraordinary! The setting is remote, pristine forest along the Macal River across from a national park. Grounds are beautiful and natural, not overly manicured, with all kinds of flowering plants. Cabins are spotless and well-appointed, each with a ceiling fan, comfortable beds, hot showers, and private patio with hammocks. There is a swimming pool, swimming hole, and yoga studio as well. I have traveled to 50 countries on 5 continents. Of all the ecolodges I experienced, this lodge is my favorite! What sets Black Rock apart is the wonderful staff--friendly and warm, making you feel special and well cared for but also welcoming you like family. The guides are experts, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. Everyone seems to enjoy working there. Victor effortlessly arranges any activities and transport, wait staff remember your food preferences, guides enthusiastically share the wonder of a rare bird or impressive Mayan ruin. Because of the remote location, most guests eat at the lodge. The dining hall is the main gathering place to meet other guests. Food is delicious with a good variety, much of it from the farm/garden. Try the Belizean breakfast with fresh fry jacks! Four course dinners are surprisingly elegant for a jungle lodge, similar to what you might expect in a big-city restaurant in the US (price is similar too). My only suggestion is maybe for more lighting at dinner. While dining by candle light is romantic, it can be difficult to see the food in the low light. A wide variety of activity options are available and all of the details are taken care of for you. You can be as active or as relaxed as you like. We loved a day of canoeing on the river with Lloyd and another day exploring Mayan ruins and local cuisine with Victor. But we also relished a day at the lodge, just hiking around, swimming, relaxing in the hammocks. And the birds!!! Did I mention the birds?!? As a birder, I was excited to see new tropical birds, springing out of bed to listen and see the birds from my patio. I enjoyed the various toucans nesting on the grounds. I watched in wonder as 7 species of hummingbirds zoomed around the feeders every evening. But I never dreamed I would add 125 new birds to my life list in a matter of days! A special thank you to Isaias, our expert guide and the best birder I ever met. His passion for birds is evident and his enthusiasm is contagious! If you are not much of a birder before you experience Black Rock, you will be a birder when you leave! We cannot say enough about the role of the staff in making our vacation experience memorable. From the first moment we arrived at the lodge, the attentive and friendly staff enabled us to decompress and really soak up the natural, pristine setting. Before the end of our stay, we were already planning our return. Black Rock is truly a magical place and an unforgettable experience!

We stayed 3 nights at Black Rock Lodge during our family trip to Belize. We loved this spot for the following reasons: -Great food. Amazing four course dinner and prompt and early breakfast service. -Comfortable rooms with excellent fans that kept us cool enough on the hot nights. -Tubing and rope swing. One of our kids' favorite activities on the whole trip. -Night walk. Guided walk in which we saw frogs, a tarantula and an armadillo -Off-site activities. We visited Barton Cave which was amazing. -Hummingbird feeders. Really buzzing with up to 7 species right before dinner. -Wildlife. We saw howler monkeys, agoutis, an armadillo, a kinkajou, a tamandua (anteater), bats, lizards, snakes, red-eyed and yellow tree frogs, and various smaller critters. -Laundry. Very affordable, and everything came back clean and neatly folded. Overall we had a fantastic experience. A couple of activities that we did that were not a favorite of the kids were the night drive (too long, not enough action) and the guided hike (too slow of hiking, not worth the cost). We also visited during a not very birdy time of year as there was no activity at the fruit feeders. And the morning bird walk was very basic, so if you are a serious birder, you might want to make other arrangements with the lodge because their guides really do seem to know their stuff. We would highly recommend this lodge to anyone traveling with families as their in something to do for everyone. The staff really goes out of the way to make it a good experience, and they are really helpful.

The staff at Black Rock Lodge are so amazing! All of our transportation, tours and fun were very well organized, and the food and drinks were great too. We enjoyed our time with the guides immensely. When my daughter lost her phone in the river, several staff members voluntarily searched the river for it. Above and beyond!

My husband and I absolutely loved our experience at Black Rock Lodge. What an interesting place! The staff are all wonderful, friendly, caring. Our guides from the lodge, Lloyd and Goldborn, were excellent. Fernando is obviously very passionate about what they do at the Lodge, and is so kind! Seeing the Maya ruins through the eyes of an actual Maya man (Lloyd) made the trip to Xunantunich far more interesting. Goldie made sure our tubing trip was fun and relaxing, as well as informative. Our cabin was great. Air conditioning would have been really nice to have since we were there during the warmest month (May), but it was doable (we are from Houston, so we know about heat and humidity, and air conditioning LOL!). Enjoyed the pool, a great way to cool off in the afternoon. Dinner was lovely and delicions. Breakfast also, fresh and yummy. We ate lunch out with our guides, who of course weren't just guides, they were friends by then. Black Rock Lodge has an interesting history, and their commitment to being as self-sufficient as possible is impressive. They generate their own electricity (and store it in Tesla batteries), grow their own produce, raise fish and animals, and strive to be good stewards of the land. The birds are plentiful. Black Rock has partnered with college students who come from the U.S. to study the birds in Belize. The constant sound of the river was so relaxing. During the rainy season they have a very creative way to get guests in and out of the lodge, by crossing the flooded road via canoe or zip line! This is a place I'd like to bring my grandchildren to when they're older. Lots to do, but more importantly, lots to learn. This is not a place where you sit around and look at a screen all day (come to think of it, our cabin didn't have a TV, not that we cared!). If you want to spend quality time with friends or family at a unique place full of genuine folks, then try Black Rock. After spending the first four nights of our trip here, we traveled to Ambergris Caye to stay in a very nice resort on the water. We enjoyed that part of our trip too, but it was nothing compared to the Black Rock experience. I wish I had written down the names of all of the lovely staff at Black Rock, to call them out by name and say thanks once again.

Spent 3 nights and could not have had a better experience. Accommodations were just fine, dining was satisfying, and offered excursions and activities were varied and numerous. It's a similar experience to the more upscale and more expensive Caves Branch Lodge, but with menu dining rather than buffet style. A big plus was the unique free unlimited river tubing right from the lodge, perhaps worth it alone to book here. Nice riverside beaches right out in front. One note: The lodge is a few miles down an unpaved road. Disregard any mention on any websites or warnings from rental car agencies about problematic access or that your rental car is not permitted on that road. The road is fine, and even the smallest economy car can easily access Black Rock year round, regardless of weather. Much of the confusion is due to outdated information and Black rock has improved the road to insure access. This lodge is right on the border to Guatemala, and makes a perfect staging point for a trip to Tikal. Have a great time!

Black Rock Lodge, a very special resort, is the place for retired couples seeking adventure, jungle knowledge, and an -once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. My husband and I are far from the typical resort tourist, but we're so glad we went here! I found plenty of food (gluten/dairy/meat free), kind and knowledgeable staff, amazing guides and drivers, and thrilling opportunities. The tours came highly recommended and were highlights of our Belize trip (ATM cave, Barton Creek cave, Caracol ruins, lodge night hike, early morning lodge birding hike). Watch out for cries the howler monkeys! (My husband was convinced that they wanted to keep him awake all night and yet, I loved them!). Every day the personal attention surprised and delighted us; we met nightly with staff to plan the next day outings and were NEVER disappointed. I never tired of nature observing (toucans! boa constrictor! cicadas! hummingbirds! howler monkeys!) on the ground themselves and loved to talk to staff about the local area, their families, and their experiences. My favorite place was the dining area...from morning coffee (thanks for the silver jar of almond milk) while birding...to our own happy hour (Rum punch!)...to dinner and conversations by candlelight. I felt very lucky to have experienced this special place. Thank you thank you!
