The Serrano Family has been the owner of the Mirador de Quetzales Lodge in the Cloud Forest since the early 90s … They have owned the land, where the Mirador de Quetzales Lodge is, since 1948 and now this is the result of their life process, a dream made true The story the family and Mirador de Quetzales Lodge goes back to those days when Eddy Serrano married young and beautiful Leonor. They were young, he was bold and full of dreams. Like in any romantic novel Eddy was a tall, strong and handsome young man. And she was petite and sweet. They got married and started living in between two volcanoes: The Turrialba and the Irazu Volcanoes… Fertile soils, chilly and foggy areas… Highlands. However, in those days the Irazu Volcano was starting to wake up after a long dormant period. The rumbling of the volcano sounded like an underground road with hundreds of oxcarts passing through it. And Leonor started to feel very afraid, day after day. It was an isolated, chilly and noisy trembl

Detailed Reviews
We just returned from a trip to Costa Rica and an overnight in Mirador de Quetzalas. If you are looking to find the Quetzal this is absolutely the place to visit. Jason and his family run the resort and Jason serves as guide/Quetzal spotter. We were quite fortunate to spot several Quetzal including a group of about four males and two females. We ran around the jungle following them as they flew from tree to tree.
The accommodations are basic and being at such a high elevation it is quite cold. Dress warmly for the evening as there is no heat in the rooms. Heating bottles are supplied. Dinner was very good, with a fantastic pumpkin soup.
You are up early to search for these elusive birds and then return for a hearty and excellent breakfast.
We only stayed overnight and did not explore the area other than to find the Quetzal - mission accomplished.
Great job by Jason and everyone at Mirador.

We spent only one night because of a tight schedule, but when we arrived, the owner showed us around the beautiful garden and pointed out different species of birds. They asked us what we would like for dinner and the trout we chose was excellent!
Because it gets very cold at night, there was an open fire in the restaurant. They even gave us "hot water bottles" to put in the beds. With that and 3 blankets I slept like a baby :-) Next morning we booked a tour with the owners for birdwatching, of course we wanted to see the Quetzal- we saw 3 and an Emerald Toucanet! Later we went for a autoguided walk up and down beautiful trails with a waterfall.
The whole place is rustic, they started Business in 1950 already, but totally clean and cozy. The view is incredible!!!!

Mirador de Quetzales is a very special place, what I like the most is that a hard working Tico family has develop this place from scratch. The area where Mirador de Quetzales is located is just amazing in Cerro de la Muerte in Talamanca Mountain Range, if Quetzals are not around the lodge, local guides knows where to find them in the vicinity. Chance to see many highlands species of birds and many species of Hummingbirds, Tanagers, Furnarids and warblers, a lot of them near-endemics, which makes it very special and high quality, the vegetation is mostly Oak Forest.

The location of the hotel is really good to explore the natural area. The hotel owns some good trails of their own, with some really beautiful corners. We found that, for the price, the cabins were somewhat old and needed a renovation. The bathroom wasn't particularly clean to be honest. They were also cold, and it only has a small electrical heater to warm the room. That said, the managers were very nice and helpful and the hummingbird feeders at the entrance are a delight.

+1
I stayed at this stunning lodge for two days during my visit to Costa Rica.
I had high hopes of seeing a Quetzal and I did! Two days in a row!!
This place is story-book stunning.
Quite often I'd look out the windows into the misty vista, the grounds covered with all sorts of lush tropical flowers, plants, hummingbirds everywhere even during the heaviest rains.....one is able to see the sunset as all windows face south.
Included in the price of the room are meals (breakfast, dinner) and a hike to see the quetzal, early in the morning before breakfast.
My room was fantastic. I was travelling solo so I had a little cabin all to myself with a huge comfy double bed. A stack of 4 huge fluffy blankets was also provided, thank gosh. I could see my breath at night and those extra blankets came in handy.
My room had a full washroom with a shower and flush toilet. It was simple, clean and with two windows looking out into the lush cloud forests. It felt like I was camping at night; silent, cold under a big fluffy stack of blankets.
One thing: during my first night I did not have a heater in my room. Later, I'd spoke to other visitors who said without a heater, they would have been too cold, at night. I didn't know small heaters were available and I highly encourage you to ask for one if your room does not have one already.
Meals were delicious!
Steven will ask you what your preference is for dinner: chicken, beef or fish. But for breakfast, I was served 'American-style'. I was not given an option and when I saw others eating something different, I inquired.
Some other people were served the tipico "traditional" breakfast including gallo pinto which I would have preferred as I do not eat meat. The next day, I was given the option at breakfast.
You are welcome to tea, coffee whenever you wish and alcoholic beverages and pop is available to buy at any time.
The sitting room is really cozy. There is a big fireplace and anyone can get up and stoke the fire. It is a nice place to hang out after dinner and to keep cozy, talking to other visitors.
The room big open room is just beautiful!! The second day I was at the lodge, it rained heavy so I spent a lot of time in that room and was happy to do so.
All wood with windows overlooking the gardens and out into the misty cloud forest valley.
Steven, the man who runs the place, is near super-human. He is a one-man show who does everything from booking reservations to bringing out the meals, to cleaning at the end of the night. He is polite and helpful.
Oscar is second in command. He's a lot of fun and took us out on the second day to see if we could spot the quetzal. He is very kind, helpful and again, had me laughing several times.
The hike out in the morning to see the quetzal is not a hike per se. You arrive at the destination and make a tiny loop, close to where the nesting site is of the quetzal. The land is owned privately and the man who owns it charges a fee for birders to come see the quetzal. It was not breeding season but we managed to see the quetzal, twice, both male and female. This was the highlight of staying at the lodge!!!
I did see other bird species around the lodge but since it was raining the whole time I was there, I was unable to do any hiking proper around the grounds including hiking to the waterfall only 4km away.
I had a wonderful time staying here and would absolutely return!

First of all: Before you stay, find out the price and pay in advance. We were charged double the price that we were originally given - $120 per night for two people is too much when you are staying in a simple, very basic mountain cabin, even if the (not too big) meals in the morning at at night are included. They also charged us $8 for a beer!
Overall, the family running the place was very nice (they even gave us hot-water bags for the second night), but did not really seem very professional or very organized (except for the morning Quetzal tour).
If you want to see the resplendent Quetzal, this is the place to be - the tour in the morning is included, and you'll see a bunch of them. The view over the mountain range in the morning and the self-guided hike through the cloud forest are also great.
Be aware, it get's really cold at night, as this is over 2600m high. Also, the promised hot water didn't work, not even with the Costa Rican electric "suicide shower".

Response from Jason S, Public Relations Manager at Mirador de Quetzales
Responded 13 May 2013
Dear Mister Ulm, Thank you for writing this review! We truly appreciate the time you took to write it and help us by showing the areas of opportunity we do have. These truly are words that we are taking seriously for our coming makeover of the lodge. As you might know we are a local family that learned about hotel management on the way and sometimes in our history this lack of academic preparation shows. However we are now changing a lot in the hotel and are willing to review the value and extras that we provide to our guests. We are starting new hummingbird areas around the rooms, getting our cabanas to be cozier...and yes! Warmer! So, if you are ever in the area again and want to honor us with your visit we really hope your next review will be a word on positive changes. Thanks again!

The family that runs this small finca/cabina couldn't be friendlier, but this is not the destination for those who are not serious birders. The place is set back from the Cerda de Muerte 'just about' far enough to not hear the vehicles on the road but you can hear the larger trucks as they barrel along the highway. This place is rustic with small individual cottages along the side of the mountain facing toward a large valley to the west. The restaurant reception area is cozy but could use alittle more upkeep and the food is adequate but not great. However, the price includes room, 3 meals and a morning hike to see the star attraction, the beautiful, exotic quetzal. The guides seemed driven to be certain we got to see this rare bird and we saw 4 that morning. Such a beautiful iridescent green with the extra long tail feathers, they were gorgeous. It was certainly worth putting up with the cool night and morning to get to see this fabulous bird!

One of our best place in Costa Rica. It's a family hotel. You don' t penetrate it intimacy but you feel the unity and their love for their place.
The best service is the morning walk, included in the price. You follow invisible ways through the forest trying to spot the quetzal. Believe me you couldn' t do this alone! And if you don' t see the quetzal immediately, enjoy the nature en the knowledge of the guide, a bird specialist in particular.( it was what we were looking for)
The accommodation itself is clean and large and you get there all what you need for a few days.
It' s a perfect place for people with a passion for the nature.

Adorable place! Very peaceful with the most amazing view over the mountains. Make sure to wake up early and watch the sun rise! Really cute cabins with nice full size beds and clean bathrooms. Excellent food and coffee. Hiking trails are a great way to start the day and search for quetzal birds!

The lodge is beautiful and virtually empty in May. The weather was cool and it rained in the afternoon - which turned out to be a blessing. When it rains, the quetzal shelters under the branches of the lush vegetation allowing incredibly long views of their resplendent glory. We watched a quetzal feed its young - amazing. The nature hike is $13 per person in May if you do not stay at the lodge. So even if you do not have time to stay, it is an incredible bargain. We took a cab from Cartago.
The showers all over rural Costa Rica are a bit of a challenge - lukewarm at best. But we are campers and relish in a clean fresh shower anywhere - so probably not a good judge of that particular aspect. The main dining room is rustic with a gorgeous view of hummingbirds and the forest.
Best experience of birds anywhere so far in Central America.
