Everything is relative. Were this hotel in Dubai or Muscat, it would be lower than a three star rating. However, it is really in the middle of nowhere. It is on the UAE/Oman border and Al Buraimi is a poor place. As an Oasis town, seemingly all the businesses are dedicated to keeping cars and lorries going. I have never seem so much small scale engineering everywhere in a town. It is all around the hotel. They have to keep the cars going because if the restaurant signs are to be believed, they have eaten all the camels.
The fabric of the hotel is sound. I had a small room and it was well furnished but in an older fashioned way. It had a stand-alone wardrobe. The bed was good and the sleep sound. The extract fan in the ensuite was a good source of white noise. The corridors are marble and everything scraps and echoes.
As a vegetarian the food wasn’t great but if you belong to muscle-chomping majority, you will enjoy it. No one got ill because of the food. In many places that is an accolade. Gold star to Al Salam.
The hotel was pretty empty and there was some renovation working going on. There were two huge explosions as giant fuses blew on my second morning there. My room was next to the Electrical Room, but also had a robust fuse box in my room. The bangs were so loud I nearly fell off my chair. Normal fuses goes ‘Doof’ when they blows. This went ‘BANG’, twice, and the power to my laptop was gone.
The hotel has free internet access. It was fairly well distributed through five or six wireless access points.
Did I mention the cockroaches? No, well that’s probably because there weren’t that many and they were small. They were however fast. When I got home I opened my case in the garden and shook my clothes, just in case any had chosen to find a different life in the UK. I did not find any. It was a precaution too far.
Would I go back? Yes, I would. You have to adjust expectations, and in that light, this hotel met expectations. In addition, I had just come from a 4 star hotel in Dubai, and it had the same wildlife/cockroach issue.
