Pros - Lovely large rooms with good views over the surounding cloud forest. The hotel provided plenty of blankets so we were never cold; some previous reviewers mentioned the low temperatures so I was a little worried about this. Very close to the Monteverde National Park, we actually walked back to the hotel after our guided tour plus an extra walk in the park. Nice bar area. We did not use the restaurant so can't comment on that. Cons - breakfast was not huge or varied, it consisted of a plate of fresh fruit followed by four options, mainly srambled eggs with something else like toast or pancake. However, on the plus side, I was given a pot of tea rather than the standard cup of hot water with a teabag, The hotel is some distance from the main town of Santa Elena so you need to take a taxi ($12 a trip), the hotel does not provide a shuttle service.

The hotel is a little dated but this is more than made up for by the excellent staff and location. The staff went above and beyond, they offered us extra blankets and heaters in case we were cold (we did not need them) and organized taxis for us to get into town and trips with travel included. I had heard the rooms were drafty but if you shut the windows properly we had no issues with drafts. Yes it is windy, but your rooms are up by the tree tops so was nothing I would not have expected. The breakfast only has 4 options, all including eggs, eg. toast and eggs, pancakes and eggs, rice, beans and eggs and eggs and rancho sauce. Fruit comes as standard with all breakfasts and ask for the hot chocolate which is excellent. If you walk to the Cloud Forest, no more than 15-20 mins walk (at a slow pace) there is a free hummingbird gallery where you can see the hummingbirds drinking from the feeders.

I enjoyed my stay at Trapp Family Hotel. Other reviews led me to think it was basic and dated but my experiences were different. Trapp is very cosy and retro in its interior, with the most stunning views. The beds are comfortable with many blankets, a duvet, and a thin sheet for warm nights. Me and my family loved being so close to the reserve for the views and as it meant transportation didn't take too long. The food was really great and the breakfast restaurant was the most lovely room with a view. It was always cool and fresh in the mornings and eating in that room was a special way to start the day. The Trapp staff are really friendly and very helpful. I recommend walking down to Monteverde/Santa Elena as the path is almost all really smooth and all down hill, but getting a taxi back.

Large comfortable bedrooms, mountain rooms have a view but it is a steep walk up to them. No heating Staff very friendly Breakfast very poor, fruit offered but then only 3 options, all egg based and only white bread. The restaurant food was better but restricted choice . Happy hour good A long way up hill from any other eating places

I stayed for 3 nights with my daughter and we had a wonderful stay. The room was large and clean with the most incredible views over the cloud forest. We saw beautiful humming birds on the shrubs in the garden from our window. Whilst the hotel is a little way out of Monte Verde, it more than compensates for the peaceful setting and stunning views. The food was fresh and well cooked so no need to go into the town. I would definitely recommend this hotel for the views alone.

A dark, dreary, cold room well past it’s sell by date A long way from town so unless you organise a taxi you are trapped here. Room was clean but no heating, and it wasn’t warm. However there was a duvet on the bed so we sat there. There was seating in a sort of veranda but very draughty and cold. Bathroom fine, no shortage of hot water. Meals were varied. Breakfast was awful. If you eat eggs then fine some choices. I asked for toast. Not difficult. The bread was the worst I have ever eaten in my entire life. Bimbo white thick sliced. Reminded me of that diet bread Slimcea from light years ago. And to put on it you got margarine. I kid you not. I asked for butter. No. Fruit fine. Tea good. I went hungry for the first time in Costa Rica. But in the main Restaurant what a contrast. Good food, freshly cooked, and a reasonable choice ( cos remember you’re miles from anywhere else, and it’s dark and cold outside). Oh I forgot to mention that you are in a block of rooms with guests above ( heavy feet) and an outside dash to breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not for anyone with mobility issues.

Very comfortable bed, staff are really friendly and everywhere is spotlessly clean. Because the hotel is higher up than all the others, it is near the cloud forest reserve and is therefore cooler and wetter than further down ( although the whole area can be cool, wet and windy!). Taxis or shuttle bus are available to get into town, but adds to the cost of dinner (unless you eat all your meals in the hotel). I can't fault the hotel staff, but this place just wasn't for me. Would suit people who are very interested in bird watching.

We stayed here for 2 nights. It’s a 15 minute walk from the iCloud park up a steep narrow hill. The staff were great, friendly and helpful. The food was tasty and we enjoyed. The rooms are spacious but freezing cold. There are lots of covers on the bed but the wind howled through the windows. I wore a wool jumper and puffer jacket with scarf to go down to dinner. The town below was much warmer. I wouldn’t recommend staying here as it’s just too cold and too far away from everything. Stay further down and get the bus up. The hummingbird cafe next to the park was a real highlight for us. We enjoyed the Orchid garden too. It came down like a sea on the night walk with heavy thunder but we still saw s lot even if thoroughly soaked. Bathroom in the hotel was cold and dark. The worst place we stayed in Costa Rica out of 6 hotels.

The hotel is in a great location, but needs some money spent on it in relation to the decor. It doesn't have a great atmosphere and lacks ambience. Food is OK but could be more imaginative and representive of Costa Rica.
