A friend and I stayed at this place during our visit to Sani Pass. The tours that they offer are great, and the area is nice. The establishment itself is the standard hostel environment with the addition of lodge houses to stay in, plus a camping area (tent is not included in the price). The really unique things about this...

Thank you for your appreciation of our commitment to conservation of the environment over the past 24 years ,via planting indigenous, alien bramble eradication, waste management via recycling and composting, water conservation, solar geysers and other ways of conserving electrical energy with insulation of geysers and only using a tumble drier if the washing cannot dry and more. We stayed in one of the very nice, comfortable self catering cottages. This is a lovely place for a family to spend some time on the Lesotho border. We enjoyed breakfast and diner twice. Every day two cheerful ladies cook diner for those who has booked earlier that day. Just good food in a pleasant atmosphere. There is a great...

Thank you for your feedback on your stay in one of our cottages. Yes it is an indictment on KZN Wildlife and Dept of Transport that the term ' sense of place' when used in connection with the as you say ' romance ' of the Sani Pass road, was ignored . Particularly as KZN Wildlife is a Conservation Body...

I've stayed here twice now as my base camp for cycling Sani Pass. I love it, the facilities are great and the atmosphere is lovely - very warm and welcoming. The outdoor shower offers the most splendid view. It is by no means luxurious - exactly how I like it! Nothing better than eating breakfast at a wooden table with...

Thank you for your feedback. We loved your comment on the outdoor shower which is always our favourite part of our camping holidays and that is why we decided to build one at the Lodge too. Nothing better than showering under the stars at night or daytime with a view of the surrounding mountains. We are constantly striving to upgrade...

We can only rate the coffee shop as we didn't have a chance to stay at the Lodge. The coffee shop is quaint with lots of stunning curio, souvenirs and even paintings by Simone which are up for purchase! The filled pancakes are a 'must try'!! We will be back next time we are in the area.

Thank you for reviewing our little Cafe on your way past and glad you enjoyed the pancakes. I am delighted you liked my paintings too!

I must admit, I got a very good deal with the lodge despite making reservations only one day before arriving. It was a last minute trip and Mirriam was very helpful in trying to accommodate us. She even gave us a good deal with rooms and rate. This is the first time we opted to stay in a lodge, and...

Thank you for your thorough feedback. We also appreciate that you understand the difference between a Backpackers that caters for travelers on a budget and thus charges rates at a fraction of the cost of a 5 star hotel ie R150pppn in a dorm as opposed to R1500pppn in a 5 *hotel . Our Backpackers Lodge has been a four...

Stayed here for three nights, the staff are friendly and quite informed. The facilities are nice, there is a fully equipped kitchen to cook and the bathrooms are clean. I visited in winter and the common room was consistently heated which created a cozy communal vibe. The location itself is nice and remote, but if you're traveling by public transport...

Hi Jeremy, thank you for your review. There is actually a good private taxi service as well as a cheap minibus service ( for guests arriving without cars) that you can get right from the Lodge into Underberg 19km or 20 minutes from us where you can do your grocery shopping for self catering. There is also the option of...

We were happy with dorm beds and were happy that we had extra blankets to fight the winter chills. Really nice vibe in communal areas; fire, home cooked snacks for purchase, plenty of info about tours available and well equipped kitchen to use. We were one time restrictions and the one day tour into Lesotho fit perfectly with us, with...

A group of us from a local camera club spent a weekend here. Although the rooms were small they were comfortable, clean and warm. The all opened up into a courtyard which proved to be very socialable - I constantly felt very much involved. The kitchen provided all the necessities to prepare a meal and was big enough to accommodate...

Thank you for your write-up. We are certain this was your first experience staying at a 'Backpackers' and whilst we are definitely not typical of most Backpacker establishments in the country as our clientele comprise a mix of foreigners and South Africans, we are delighted you chose to stay with us and that you enjoyed the experience. This lodge is a mix of backpackers, with simple but cosy dorms in one building and even cosier rondavels, some with ensuite baths. The common room with a fireplace, a book exchange, and a pool outside, is also very cosy. The room I stayed in, the single rondavel, was very clean and comfy. Food at the neighboring restaurant is very...

Thank you for your comprehensive feedback. We do run tours for one person with our tour company Drakensberg Adventures but it is expensive which is why we have always advised people on our website and brochure that if they are planning to do a tour during their stay and especially if they are traveling alone, they should book in advance....
