Hotels near Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary

We are located in the lovely Brecon Beacons National Park area of South Wales. The sanctuary rescues and provides a home for many types of unwanted animals, especially primates, such as chimpanzees, baboons, mandrills, spider monkeys, vervets, capuchins, mangabeys and marmosets. Although we specialise in the care and protection of primates we cannot stand by and see other animals in need of help. You will therefore find wolf dogs, horses, donkeys, cattle, pigs and others at our sanctuary. All are equally important members of our extended family. Visitors are welcome to see the animals and the work we do. We undertake a number of rescues from zoos and laboratories where animals have suffered mistreatment and deprivation or are no longer wanted. As they are not equipped for survival in the wild we can only endeavour to make the rest of their lives as enjoyable and stress free as possible.

It was raining so most of the animals were inside where you couldn’t see very well. I realise these animals have been rescued and are probably in a better place compared to where they were and I don’t want to put off people from contributing to their upkeep however think the enclosures could of been more comfortable and bigger. The chimps (who you could see) had little straw and were on a concrete floor and just looked depressed and cold.I’m sure the staff do their best….. only saw the lady in the shop. Maybe it’s a funding issue.

Having read previous reviews we went with an open mind, if the animals had been in a poor condition we would leave. We ended up spending over 2 hours and just could not understand the negative feedback. The animals were all in good condition with food, water and cover easily accessible. The shredded tyre paths were a brilliant idea for walking around , making them comfortable to walk on with no muddy puddles. The staff were all happy to talk to us about the animals and the sanctuary. We had a wonderful time and we will return next time we are in Wales.
If people relied on trip advisor then they'd never leave the house so thank you your positive review! Really pleased you enjoyed, please visit again :)

Visited here this morning, with my husband and grandchild, thought it would be a few nice hours out, as on the website, it was showing lots of different monkeys and apes, my grandson loves them all. Arrived just after opening time, paid for tickets and was directed by the lady in the shop where to go. Must say, I was very disappointed, with the amount of animals on show. I know this is a sanctuary and these animals have been rescued, but in my opinion their housing isn't ample, the cages are very small, and I could only see a few balls in the cages for their entertainment. We had visited a sanctuary in April, just outside Weymouth and it would knock spots off this one. Lovely wide open spaces, big enclosures, lots more animals to see. The 1 dog can barely stand, very upsetting to watch him, it could be his age, but not nice to see him struggling around. Apart from that my grandson enjoyed his time there.

I purchased the monkey meet and greet experience voucher for my mum as a gift. It was a fantastic, unforgettable experience to be so close to these incredible animals, my mum found it very emotional and rewarding to see the animals’ intelligence and clear communication with us whilst feeding them and giving them bottles. The member of staff who showed us around was very knowledgeable and made sure we had a special experience whilst keeping safety paramount for both us and the animals. I would definitely recommend this experience to all, as it really was an eye opener to the emotion and intelligence these animals have. The work the sanctuary do to provide for the animals is incredible and the money was definitely worth it, as the sanctuary deserves so much support.

Please ignore the many negative reviews. This is not a zoo but a rescue centre - on our recent visit we found the animals very well looked after, well fed and relaxed with spotlessly clean cages. Yes, in an ideal world the cages could be a little bigger but when you read the disturbing situations from which they have been rescued you will appreciate that these animals are very fortunate indeed. They all have numerous items to play with, to climb and swing from, and one family of baboons have an island on which to play with a tunnel into their shore shelter. If I had a criticism it would be that the site looks rather untidy - when you drive in there are two old lorry containers rusting away - I am sure that this could easily be improved. Well worth a visit and support for this worth while charity.

Lovely place to visit for a couple of hours. My teenage son and I visited recently. These animals have all been taken from terrible circumstances and at last have some peace and stability. Thank you to the staff who care for the animals. We took a picnic and enjoyed eating it at one of the picnic tables provided. The charity shop on site was nice and we spent a few pounds there. Also sold ice creams. Thank you

What a lovely place to visit. It was a joy to see the animals so comfortable in their surroundings. There is a path that passes all the enclosures and It was great to be so close to the animals. The monkeys and apes were so funny and we were lucky to get some sign language from one of them who told us to take off our hats and glasses! My favourite was one of the Capuchin monkeys who thought it was hilarious to offer me chewed up grapes. The information boards were really useful even though some of the stories were heartbreaking. We spent about two hours walking around the enclosures, with a break for ice cream, and then another 20 minutes browsing through the second hand bookshop where we found some hidden gems of books. All in all an excellent trip and thanks to Rosie and the other staff for the amazing work they do.
Sounds like you met Ronnie & Dexter! They are proper funny characters. Ronnie is the chimp who does sign language Dexter LOVES to through his food you. He's partial to a boiled egg and trust me, that makes a mess! So pleased you enjoyed and thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review and it was lovely chatting to you :) Rosie :)

Wonderful conservation project we found. All the monkeys and apes have incredible back stories and there are other animals here too all being cared for. (We saw pigs, horses, goats, wolves and gorgeous cart! To name a few. £30.00 family ticket was good gays we thought but car park is small go early. Small seating area indoors with coffee machine and ice cream. We had a super morning there and learned lots on there conservation programmes.

Amazing place! We have visited on several occasions and today we visited for the Meet and Greet with the Chimps. The experience was amazing and something I have always wanted to do. The chimps are fascinating all with their individual personalities and to be able to get up close and feed them was a dream come true. The work they do here is incredible and whilst it may be small I could spend all day here watching the animals (especially the chimps). Plenty of seating areas to stop and have a picnic, lovely staff and reasonably priced. My only negative is that I don't live closer 😆
