Beautiful Building only viewed from the outside
After a fire destroyed the city’s main theatre in 1756, the Grand Théâtre was constructed between 1773 and 1780 by architect Victor Louis. Described as a masterpiece of European architecture, it is located in the beautiful and central Place de la Comédie. Neoclassical in style, it evokes musings of ancient architecture thanks to its Corinthian columns. The Grand Théâtre is fronted by a columned portico, with 12 impressive Corinthian columns adorning its façade. The portico is crowned by 12 stone statue representing goddesses and muses -9 muses and 3 goddess – Minerva, Venus and Juno. I was surprised to discover that it served as inspiration for designing the Paris opera house as the staircase served as a model for the Opera Garnier in Paris. Our guide explained that thanks to precise acoustic calculations, the theater auditorium is famous for its excellent acoustics. It is no coincidence that the French National Assembly moved here when Paris was occupied by the Prussians during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Unfortunately, we could not view the interior, perhaps this will be a reason to return to Bordeaux. Surprisingly, once we walked around the building, we found it to be domed, however, if you stand far enough back on Allées de Tourny you can snap a great picture of this architectural beauty. Today the theatre is the seat of the Opéra National de Bordeaux.

Free Visit During EU Heritage Open Weekend in September
This imposing 18th century theatre is home to the Opéra National de Bordeaux. Located in the main square, Place de la Comédie, it looks more like a classical Greek or Roman temple. 12 large Corinthian columns dominate the facade and the top of the building is crowned with 12 stone statues of ancient goddesses and muses. We wondered what the difference between a muse and a goddess was. In ancient mythology, a muse was a source of knowledge and inspiration for the arts and sciences. Traditionally, there were 9 of them, each with their own special field which might be music or dance, astronomy or poetry. All nine are represented on top of the theatre. We were able to visit inside. I can see that other reviewers below have commented that the Theatre is not open for tours. However we were lucky because we were here during the EU Heritage Open Day weekend when many historic buildings are open to the public for free. The interior is very grand, with a central curving staircase leading to a large and lavishly decorated auditorium. The high ceilings are covered with frescos and chandeliers. It's all very impressive and worth a visit if you get the chance.

    With a guide!
Magnificent monument, 50-minute visit, to do with a guide to really be immersed! All opinions speak for themselves. 10 euros a ticket, 8 with the card "handicapped", (don't forget) sacred discount for our friends "handicapped", but hey, I understand! Otherwise we had a great time, plus there was a repeat of "Hazelnut Break". Here, the Freemasonry was already there ........
