    Historic and charming
Our journey to the Sassenpoort in Zwolle was a delightful excursion into history. Riding our bicycles through the charming streets of Zwolle, we eagerly made our way to this iconic medieval gateway, surrounded by the picturesque scenery of a city awakening from its slumber. The scarcity of tourists bestowed upon us the rare opportunity to immerse ourselves fully in the aura of this ancient monument, undisturbed by the usual crowds. Dismounting our bicycles, we ventured beneath the imposing arches of the Sassenpoort, stepping into a world where the echoes of the past reverberated through time. Amidst the weathered stones and silent streets, we explored the intricate passageways and climbed the worn steps of the tower, each ascent revealing breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape. In those moments of discovery and camaraderie, as we laughed and shared stories amidst the ancient walls, the Sassenpoort became not just a historical landmark, but a cherished memory of a time filled with joy and exploration. Five stars on the Cherry Wonderdog scale.

    100 steps to climb
One of the only standing fortified gates of the town, you can climb up 100 steps to get to the clock tower. There was 4 stories and each one tells a story. The man at the reception was very passionate about the history of the gate. For a €5 voluntary donation they were giving out commemorative coins as well. Spent just under half an hour there. Since the windows are narrow views of the town are limited but you can still catch Peperbus and other churches from the top.

    Access to the center
Around the 14th and 15th centuries, a city wall was built around the entire center of Zwolle. The wall surrounded the entire city, gates were placed in various places such as the Diezerpoort, Kamperpoort, Luttekepoort, Rode Toren, Sassenpoort, Steenpoort, Vispoort and Waterpoort. Of these, only the Sassenpoort has been preserved in its entirety.

  • Dominicanenklooster Zwolle Hotels
This Dominican convent is a place to marvel and contemplate. This neogotic complex is openend in 1901 and consists of a church and monastery. There are Catholic celebrations each weekend and also a lot of spirtual and philosophical activities during the week. This church is daily opend for visitors (tuesday-saturday 13.30-16.30). Special features of the church are the stained glass windows almost all made by a dominican brother. You can see the inspiration of the worldfamous stained glass windows in Chatres in one of the windows. The beautiful mosaic floor in the choir of the church celebrates the creation of the world with the four elements of the earth and the constellations. It's located just outside the citycanals in the district Assendorp at the beginning of the Assendorperstraat. A street with nice shops as well. It's a 10 min walk from the station Zwolle or citycenter and a nice way to see more of Zwolle than only the tourist highlights.
