This is one of the best tours in Key West. This beach and fort are located 15 minutes from the entrance of Key West, where we stayed. We took a small queue to enter and paid $7 to park the car (2 people). I ordered at the entrance and they gave us a map in the dorm. The parking lot was very quiet early, but the afternoon was quite full. We moved to the fort after the beach and we barely got a place. The beach is very beautiful, short extension and with plenty of stone. It is quite difficult to walk in it because of the stones and corals. The movement was increasing on the beach by the morning. The sea in April was very upset. I tried snorkeling, but I gave up because I couldn't see anything. There was also living water in the sea. The place has plenty of structure, with showers, bathroom, water to fill bottle. It is a good place to spend the day as it also has a great restaurant (Cayo Hueso Café) and souvenir shop. After enjoying the beach, we visit the fort which is very interesting! It took about 40 minutes to get to know the entire fort, calmly, but without being in the details. It has an ok view of the mango and the beach next door. At the entrance of the fort there is a small map that we picked up in a box. It was a cool walk! On the side of the complex there is a beautiful area where people stay fishing and taking pictures. I recommend the tour!!! It was very nice!!!

Fort Taylor is a nice and affordable attraction when you're visiting Key West. There is an entrance fee but it allows you access to the entire park which includes a fort, beach and hiking trails. You can enter by car, bike and foot. If you're walking there the free Duval Loop bus will bring you pretty close it is stop#7 Southard and you just have to walk a bit. The fort tour is actually a great way to brush up on your history and not boring at all. We had Grimm as our guide and he has a story teller flair that makes the tour quick and enjoyable, he gave people an option to come and go as they please and we all stuck through the entire tour together. Beach is rocky so recommend wearing water shoes or thicker sole shoes. There are bathroom facilities and a cafe/grill that serves hot dogs and burgers or you can bring our own picnic. A great and affordable way to spend the day enjoying the sunshine and outdoors.

There are mainly two things to see -- the beach an the historic fort. There are also some walking trails, so make sure you have the right type of shoes - I would not recommend sandals. I suggest water shoes if you plan to enter from the shore because it is incredibly rocky. We had a wonderful stroll through the park and to the fort. Entrance to the park is $2.50 per person if you are on foot.

The cost is $4.50-6/day for a car but you can come and go. The Fort is right there onsite which you can tour and at 11 am they have free walking tours which were informative and fascinating. Along the Fort is the beaches. The beaches were beautiful. There were restrooms, showers, picnic tables under the shades and charcoal grills. Depending on what side of the park you sit at you’ll find a change in the wind and choppiness of the waves. The park closes at sundown which for us was around 7:40pm. You can catch a beautiful sunset here and it is not as crowded and obscured as Mallory Square.

Very nice state park! Super nice water with a great beach. Entrance fee for two people and a car is $7. There is hardly a better price-performance ratio. You can rent loungers/umbrellas or snorkeling equipment on the beach. Or bring your own. It was a bit busier than a normal beach in Miami. It's Key West after all. But everyone was very relaxed and not too crowded.

One of the prettiest beaches I have ever seen. Not a barefoot beach! Wear your water shoes, as some of the terrain is rocky, which adds to the unique beauty of this beach. We toured the historic fort prior to discovering the beach. We walked from Old Town to the park; only a $2.50 per person admission for pedestrians to enter this state park. Well maintained piece of property by the State of Florida. Will definitely return during next Key West visit & will be prepared to spend more time at the beach.

Fabulous state park with lots of shade by the beach. Lovely. We walked from the historic district (Truman Annex) in 15 minutes and it was only $2.50 per person to enter. Returned the next day!

Rocky and cordoned off like a construction site, the beach in the city park presented itself as uninviting. That he was so full is not his fault. That it constantly smelled like diesel was really annoying. But you really don't have to go here.

Park Ranger at the gate, Michelle Patterson, did a fantastic job informing me that as a service-connected disabled veteran I could receive a free pass to all state parks. She created my park pass and we were able to enjoy Fort Zackery Park every day during our weeklong stay. Michelle was very informative, professional and efficient. Thanks for honoring our soldiers.

Beautiful park! Beach and water are gorgeous!!! There is a concession stand selling alcoholic beverages, sandwiches, burgers, hit dogs, cool drinks, and more! We even picked up ear plugs for my 9 year old daughter who was having ear issues from swimming. There is a small shop too. It is a nice picnic area and trees to top of the scenery. The fort is a nice added stop! The only downside is the beach is rocky - but knowing that ahead of time we had water shoes. It is the sand and the water! But the snorkeling is amazing!!

  • Smathers Beach Hotels
Lap up the sunshine and score a golden tan at Key West’s largest public beach. The crystalline waters, palm-lined shores, and clear blue skies are all you need for a relaxing beach vacation. But if you’re up for some beach activities, there are beach volleyball nets, jet skis and paddleboard rentals available. Couples can opt for a romantic catamaran cruise while families with young kids can enjoy a splashing good time in the shallow waters. You can visit Smathers Beach any time of the year, but it gets particularly busy between March and April, when the spring break crowd rolls in. – Tripadvisor
