Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
This small museum was wonderful. I was excited to see Yayoi Kusama’s art because I have heard so much about her. The gallery was great and had such cool art by her. The garden is the back was very picturesque.
"Carefully follow the path -- if you exit early (as we did), you'll miss the Twin Dragon ceiling"

We visited here on our last day in Kyoto, unfortunately without our guide. Had she been present, we would have understood to stay on the path (across the garden) to see the the Twin Dragon ceiling, installed in 2002 to mark the 800th anniversary of this temple's founding. Once out, you must pay again to re-enter, which we declined to...
"Worst service experience while in japan (by far)"
reviewed 30 June 2018 by SFKingBoss
Very rude staff. More worried about making sure each person has a separate order (1 order per seat and 1 order per person to use toilet) than anything else. There are far friendlier options which also offer better prices.
Lunch after a long morning of sight seeing and wandering around the city. Had the Kobe sirloin which was cooked to perfection and paired with a couple of glasses of vino. Certainly not cheap but still incredible.
My partner and I made reservations online beforehand, which I would recommend you do. One of us was vegetarian and the owners were very careful and accommodating for this. Both of our meals were exceptionally good and at a fair price. The wagyu beef in particular was mouthwatering. The black sesame ice cream was also delicious. But more than this,...
We enjoyed our meal at this restaurant. It was recognisably Japanese, but with a bit of a twist. The menu was a choice of 3 multi course meals, but we felt that worked well, having had previous meals in Japan where everything arrived at the same time. The salmon was beautiful, and the nougat ice cream was delicious. The young...
My husband and I stayed at the beautiful Umegae room in Shiraume for one night for our honeymoon, and it was a luxurious experience filled with excellent service and attention to detail. Even before our arrival, the owner, Okuda-san, diligently communicated via e-mail to ensure that the food preferences and details were well-prepared for.
Shiraume was close to the Kawaramachi...
This was my third stay at the Mume, the finest boutique hotel imaginable. The owner, Hisako and her staff welcomed me back five years after my last stay, as though I were family. My husband and I stayed in the Wind room, the second largest at the hotel. It was warm and cozy and offered absolutely everything one could need,...
A lovely hotel for a taste of traditional Japan..tatami mats, slippers, futons and tea ceremonies. The food is exceptional and is served in your room by a kimono-clad member of staff. An immersive experience.
Great location in the heart of Gion...men only place...great facilities...rooftop Jacuzzi and salt spa....3 further pools and sauna inside in communal bathing area...excellent breakfast included..staff very friendly...first time in capsule hotel...beds really comfortable...no problems with noisy guests pop in the earplugs and off you go...great value
Brilliant, friendly, courteous and gracious staff really set the scene.
Room was compact with very nice Japanes decore and was anticeptically clean.
Location in the heart of Gion was delightful.
Only downside was that the (free) wifi was very slow.
Will stay again!
