While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
I was surprised to see the former residence of Dr Sun Yat Sen so well preserved. Although he had never been a member of the Communist Party he is regarded a a hero and identified as a revolutionary, highlighting his links to the Party (and Joffe, the Russian). Sun Yat Sen died in 1925, well before the Chinese Communists took...
Just down south from Nanjing Road, another main artillery of ancient Shanghai converging with the new Shanghai is Huaihai Road. This is French town, the former French Concession. One of the only preserved concession areas remaining (apart from the Bund). Is this why Shanghai is called Paris of the East? Maybe there’s more to it.

I’ve been to similar restaurants in the past, but never to this particular restaurant. Walking into the lobby and up the stairs you’re treated to some amazing facts about the origins of their food they serve, which are in both Chinese and English. Fascinating to read and intriguing you before you sample their food!
The food is amazing - Chinese,...
Had a brunch there with a friend on Sunday. It was actually very calm, not a lot of people. We took the brunch formula and we weren’t disappointed! The amount of food was crazy, we couldn’t finished but fortunately they offer takeaway. The food was so delicious and the place is very well decorated! I would definitely come back!
Once in a while you find one of those wonderful cafes or restaurants that becomes your personal "hangout". That's what I found here. This is such a quaint little place. DC (David) is not just the owner and mastermind of Wow, he's your new friend. He has an astounding encyclopedic knowledge of coffee and is always happy to share his...
Awesome facilities and service.
Excellent quality of mattress and bed linens.
Great price within a prime location.
The hotel staff were very helpful with recommendations around Shanghai, I would stay again.
This is my very first review of anything on the net, but this hotel deserved a review from me of our stay recently. This is one of those story that you heard happens to other folks but never to yourself, until the old Murphy's law creep in when you least expected. It had disaster written all over it but with...
I have lost count how many times I have stayed here. The experience just keeps getting better. I was both staying and running a 2 week conference here.
The rooms have recently been updated. This means the bathroom, TV and decor. The toilet seat even warms up for when you sit down.
The TV has the usual channels AND a...
The Okura Garden Hotel is a classic hotel in Shanghai with a (not impressive) garden in front that has basic greenery. In the lobby area the Art Deco style is quite attractive. But the hotel is getting old and needs maintenance. When I made my reservation it said my room would be between 8-16 floor. They gave me room 816....
Located in the French Concession, near by main streets shopping area , xintiandi and tian zi fang.
Very unique boutique hotel, all the villas are shikumen style(shanghainese house) typical lane houses.
We loved our villa, felt like home. (Different floors for the Living room, entretainment room, bedroom, bathroom and rooftop) Everything was perfect!
If you are looking smth different from...
