"'The best way to do something is by someone else's experience. I would not go to a nail or hair salon without a referral, (and) nobody likes to be misled,' says Nicole Freeman, a Burlingame, Calif., chiropractic student who regularly trolls postings at TripAdvisor.com before booking a room. The site combines its own user reviews, citations from newspapers and guidebook publishers, and other Web-based commentary (including traveler reviews at Travelocity and Fodors.com), and uses the results to come up with a 'popularity index' for hotels in a given area."
