We visited the Black Venus on a Wednesday night. We took our dog with us and we were able to sit on the table nearest the door which is allocated for dog owners. There is a restaurant area further in where no dogs are allowed which is good. The menu choices were fabulous, we went for the Cajun chicken, pulled... More

Lovely traditional English pub . Nicely decorated. Friendly service. A good selection of food . The food was very nice , in fact my wife's mussels were better than the ones she had in a fish restaurant back on fistral beach . All in all impressed. Such a shame it is so far from where we live otherwise we would... More

We turned up at 6.15pm on a Saturday evening and were amazed at how the placed was packed. We booked a table for 12 and were told that it would be at least 1 and a half hours. We had no option other than to stay and wait. To our delight the required number of places became available within 30... More

Family of four (old, old, 8, 6). We had an extremely gorgeous mackerel pate with toast and horseradish cream. I've never had nicer in pub. We also had the mussels - quite dull and very messy, they need to learn how to use a muslin sieve. Cod and chips 12.50, extraordinarily poor on all counts, size, taste and presentation. We... More

We were very lucky it was dry, clear and mild for mid-February; the snowdrops were out along the numerous small watercourses, occasional daffodils were opening along the grass verges and the views were to die for along the green undulating hills of North Devon. She hedges were nicely trimmed and everything looked very well cared for, including The Black Venus... More

We went to this pub today for lunch, as recommended by my nephew and I was very impressed! The menu was extensive catering for all tastes, nice to see several items were "homemade" which is rare to see these days. The portions were a generous helping yet still of a high quality. Despite not having a dessert they looked amazing... More

I've eaten here many times before but not for a couple of years since. So whilst on a short break in Exmoor we all came here for Sunday lunch. The service was the same as always. Brilliant. Food arrived quickly and was cooked excellently. The portions are huge and well worth the £9.95 price. Great selections of beers on draught... More

Really good Sunday roast, large portion. I had the chilli which was excellent. Super dog friendly, busy and you can't book but you don't have to wait long or at all in our case. Service friendly, locals welcoming. Plan to go back tomorrow for dinner.

You cannot reserve a table here, but we have never failed to be found a table. It is SO worth a visit. A traditional pub just in the environs of Exmoor. All meals we have had here with the current management have been excellent! In the summer you can sit outside and in the winter inside. Dogs allowed in the... More

The place was full of people when we arrived but managed to get a table. The lady at the bar was really sweet and helped us choose. The real highlight was the food. From roast potatoes to the finger licking gravy. It was stunning and very reasonably priced. Would recommend this to anyone visiting the area.
