Ate here twice this trip. My first visit during my last trip wasn't so great. But this time I have to say it was quite solid. The pasta was fresh with a nice tomato marinara. Pizzas were good but pizza in Japan tends to be more bread like so be aware. The best was the Caesar salad. Really tasty and... More

Nothing much to say other then if you're desperate for something to eat and everything is closed (as in my case) and it happens to be right in front of your nose go for it. A sort of wine bar, Italian food thing. Nothing good to report nor nothing bad. It just is.

In Japan, and especially Tokyo, good service is highly valued and restaurants strive to excel. Marugo seems to have decided to stand out by being the polar opposite. Unless being treated poorly is your thing, avoid this venue. It is surrounded by bars and restaurants that will appreciate your custom.

As noted, this place has some nice wines from 500 to 1800 yen per glass. They have a bar and tables. Smoking at the bar. Wines are mostly from Europe and are there is a wide selection. They also have a full bar and make cocktails. Dinner menu has pasta, pizza, and other Italian fare. I had some pizza which... More

Went in for a glass of wine and had a number of glasses of wine. Interesting small space set up very openly for lively conversation among guest. The amount of wine per glass was about 100ml which was a little small for the price but and good and interesting selection. Had a few bites and they were tasty and again,... More

I would recomend this place for a late hour glass of wine, as it is open until 2 a.m. Prices are not too expensive. Wines are not excellent, but OK and the foods (cheese, olives, prosciutto, etc.) that go with the wines, are also fine. There are no proper "tables & chairs", but only high-stools and bar tables, whose size... More

Good variety of wine and food. Better to book in advance as it is usually quite crowded. 1F is for smokers, 2F for non-smokers. Can be a bit noisy

The Marugo Grande restaurant (and bar) is a fresh and welcoming “alternative” while being in Tokyo and especially in the Shinjuku area. Not only do they offer decent meals (small but priced thereafter) they also have a rather decent collection of French and Italian wines, something which comes across as a “wine-heaven” while visiting far east. The staff always comes... More

Staying in Shinjuku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.
