What interesting in jaoan is they are very creative. This restaurant is one of them. Serving huge Giant bowl of udon. Actually you can choose medium or large but with the same price. Just go for large to experience it. We ordered 3 bowls for 4 adults. Had to struggle to finished them all. 4 of us cost ¥3880. Worth... More

Spent a little time looking for this place as I could not locate any English sign. With some help, finally got to it. It's right in front of 'Little Fat Lamb', down the basement. Ordered the winter special udon. It was in a huge bowl. The udon and the ingredients were fresh and it's real comfort food in the cold... More

This restaurant serves a great bowl of udon noodles with a tasty broth (clear and curry versions). The portions are huge (look at the size of the bowl compared to my hand) and the prices were reasonable (around $10-$15 per portion). We came during the evening and there was a 20 minutes wait. Inside there was a band playing line... More

Get there early. By 7:15 pm the line runs up the stairs and into the street (it's at basement level). Almost exclusively Japanese clientele, a good sign. Hearty portions of genuinely delish udon dishes. Very cold beer. Like many many places smoking is allowed, though the place is well ventilated and that was not an issue. Very nice atmosphere, service... More

We decided to go here for an uncomplicated meal based on Udon noodles. What a great find. A restaurant with a difference. The clientele appear to be basically young people who queue up, there doesn't appear to be a capacity to book a place. It's noisy, but not to invasive. Terrific service and well able to deal with monolingual English... More

We went to this place with a Japanese friend; it was good enough that we came back for another go. We would have missed it otherwise - it doesn't have any English signage, it's a basement restaurant in front of a place called 'Little Sheep'. Even the regular udon servings are substantial, I had a beef tendon curry udon and... More

My son, Chris, booked a dinner table for eight of us. It was Tuesday, June 28. Our waiter host was a very polite, friendly and smiling all the time which made us all feel so at ease, relaxed and happy. When we arrived, we were immediately ushered into a private room. The menu is extensive - some of the dishes... More

First came here 18 months ago, came back almost daily on that Tokyo trip. This trip, as soon as I got off the plane and dropped off my luggage this was my first stop! I am pescatarian so I get the umeboshi udon.

This place is very hyped and locals were lining up with us to get in. When you walk it the space is beautiful and you expect to be in for a real treat. We may have just ordered badly but the food was really unimpressive compared to other similar places we ate in Tokyo. We had tempura udon, noodles were... More

Staying in Shinjuku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinjuku
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.
