Nowhere else will you see such authentic and passionate flamenco music and dancing. This hole-in-the-wall bar and restaurant take you to Spain from the minute you walk in. Our group of 4 enjoyed a jug of spicy sangria and an array of tasty tapas before being regaled by the outstanding floor show.

The floor show was great! It is so close in this tiny restaurant that you can't help but be drawn into the intense flamenco fervour. The food was good but not great, the service was excellent as was the cocktail! Because it is so small booking well ahead is recommended!

Took a family of chinese friends from Malaysia. We went to the early 6pm sitting on a Friday and it was perfect. The restaurant was quiet, service was attentive and prompt. We had a range of taste sensations by choosing many different tapas as well as one large paella. The prices were reasonable and wine prices were very moderate. We... More

We enjoyed a delicious meal of tapas and paella in the charming Kanela Restaurant for our anniversary. Centrally located in a quiet side street of the trendy suburb of Fitzroy. Lovely friendly staff and divine food make this a must dinning experience for those seeking an authentic experience.

Great night out for a group. Service friendly and attentive. Food reasonable but I've spent a bit of time in Spain so i'm picky. Flamenco show was the highlight - absolutely amazing and authentic. Would go again !

Go for the dinner and the flamenco show and you will not be disappointed! We ordered dinner a la carte and the croquettes, Spanish tortilla, paella and sangria were delicious. The paella for 2 ppl is huge and filled with seafood and meat. The flamenco show was amazing and it felt like we were back in Spain. Highly recommended we... More

First time to this restaurant, nice ambient & quite small, service was ok & friendly. We ordered tapas & the first lot came out warm & tasty. Second lot of food came out cold. My desert was churro which was tasty, my daughter ordered chocolate cake which was a Coles cake cut up, which was so obvious, they didn't try... More

I have been here many times, and never left disappointed. It is a little pricey, but then again, i have never found good, cheap food in Melbourne. The food here is fresh, tasty and very good. Plenty of choice on the food and wine menus, and great to see so many GF dishes marked on the menu. The service is... More

Description
Full of unbridled Spanish spirit, this Melbourne restaurant serves a delicious variety of traditional tapas to the sights and sounds of fiery flamenco dancers. Regular performances by the Melburnian Arte Kanela dance troupe guarantee the spice isn't reserved for the cooking. The signature dish here is the much-loved classic paella: rice and seafood cooked slowly in a large, cast-iron pan. It's simple cooking at its best and the generous servings mean it's best shared between friends. Diners can choose to sit in the modest outdoor area or inside, where the dim red lighting casts a warm glow over the rustic wooden furnishings.

Staying in Fitzroy

Neighbourhood Profile
Fitzroy
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighbourhood that embraces both old and new.
