If you feel like fish and chips but want a big menu to peruse, Hooked has a huge range of options and sides. We had the john dory (grilled) and calamari (grilled). We opted for a 'healthy' side of sweet potato chips, some brown rice, asian slaw and asian greens. This was a huge meal (apart from the sort of... More

Back in Melbourne with an afternoon to kill. Why not try fish & chips. Researched a bit to find one that was recommended AND served mushy peas. As an Englishman who probably is trying to find fish and chips like the ones we had as kids (which in reality were probably rubbish) the challenge is high. Chose Hooked in Fitzroy.... More

If you're looking good freshly cooked traditional fish n chips. All the extras are really good, and I do like the fish burritos and the burgers are good too. Is missing the sea sticks and battered savs but I didn't really miss them. Oh the potato cakes ( or potato scallops or potato fritters depending where you're from) are good... More

My friend and I dropped in for some lunch. We ordered the lunch specials and were rewarded with huge servings of both fish, tender calamari, chips and salad. Quirky restaurant with some antique style fixtures. Considering we only had a short time to eat before moving the car, service was very quick.

Blue granadier was well-battered, flavoured and fried. Fish was fresh and portion was decent. It went well with the steamed brown rice and fresh Asian slaw. Overall, a healthy and filling meal! A relaxing environment and service was friendly too.

The place looks fantastic with a really good mural on one wall, wooden panels, nice tiles and some fishing related old photos on the wall. The girl on the counter was really helpful and friendly and their British fish and chips looked amazing on the plate. The chips appeared to be hand cut and were really chunky and nice. The... More

Staying in Fitzroy

Neighbourhood Profile
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighbourhood that embraces both old and new.
