Go for the ‘local’ place next to the pub. Touristy, noisy, rude, and tiny portions of (delicious, but still..) fish.

Stopped here on the way back from Cape Reinga. It was very crowded but didn't take too long to be served and receive the food. Yummy fresh fish (Hoki) and good chips.

Always on our must do list whenever we visit New Zealand...consistently good, fresh food with prompt service. I loved the salt and pepper calamari...our friends enjoyed the battered fish...delicious...glad the standard is still as high...with glorious views!

The fish was fantastically fresh, crispy on the outside and juicy inside. The atmosphere was great with good views of the harbour. The portions were generous and reasonably priced. We had mixed views on the chips. It was so busy the service was slow.
The self-styled “best fish and chips in the world” does serve up reasonable fare, with a smile and in a lovely location but for me, no fish and chip shop that serves frozen chips rather than makes them fresh from actual potatoes can ever merit...More
