You will pay for ambiance, for sure. We enjoyed lunch in the restaurant and then had high tea in the garden. It was a beautiful setting and we didn’t feel like we were still in Malaysia—it felt like Europe. The gardens are very pretty and it was a relaxing place to sit and have tea. I did not find the high tea very special though. The tea was okay. The teaware was a heavy white tea cup and tea pot but it didn’t really feel like a high tea. Also, I see why some reviewers complained about the high tea for one. My teapot was enough tea easily for two people to enjoy. I consumed 4 full cups of tea with my one pot yet they will not provide a second cup so that anyone else dining with you can enjoy the pot of tea. I did not need that much tea nor 2 cookies (I chose the cookie high tea instead of the scones). This should be tea for two. Also, I realize we were here in the early afternoon but we were told the pub would open at 2:30pm and had waited for it to open (my husband had hoped to enjoy a pint in the pub) but it remained blocked off and closed. We were disappointed the pub did not open when we were told it would. When I searched online for the hours for the pub to double-check, I couldn’t find any details on the hotel’s website. We weren’t staying at the property so we couldn’t wait all afternoon so we just left after being there for a couple of hours waiting for it to open. Oh well. Again, it is a pretty place to dine and the portions are huge, but the menu prices for meals are high compared to anything else you’ll pay in the Cameron Highlands. You will be paying for ambiance and for a British-like experience.

We 'tested' the place a few days before for afternoon tea, and this was great on every measure! We then reserved for dinner to celebrate a big birthday. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and our dinner: service was very friendly and attentive, food was excellent and plenty in very cosy atmosphere. And as the staff realised we were here to celebrate a birthday, we got a very nicely prepared sweet – this was very touching!

For what you pay at this restaurant, we expected a little bit more. In Malaysia, you can eat exceptional food for next to nothing. So when you pay on average RM60 for a plate of food, even if it is considered ‘western’, then your expectations are high - maybe too high? The prawn cocktail starter was beautifully presented but impractical to eat (merely prawns on top of a salad bed that did not come together easily), the steak was on the thin side and had a strange seasoning (almost masala-like) that was unpleasant and the fish was an exceptionally small piece amidst a mountain of mash which still left you hungry afterwards. The service and ambience was good, though.

My brother (Muslim) went for breakfast yesterday and ordered English Breakfast. He was shocked to be served real bacon. Upon checking with the waiter it was confirmed and the items were replaced with chicken. They were informed that pork is only served for breakfast and different utensils are used when cooking pork. After checking TA I see this has been mentioned few times so we should be aware. However, the server should have warned any diner about it upon ordering and there should be a notice posted somewhere. This is a major oversight.

Points for the ambience and that's it. Food is incredibly pricey but disappointingly mediocre. The worst of the lot by far would be the beef wellington. Anyone who has ever written a good review for their beef wellington is lying. Let me break it down for you : 1) Puff pastry is beyond soggy. Barely flakey and not baked well. Bottom of the pastry isn't even cooked. Wot. 2) The mushroom duxelles is a measly thin layer on only the top of the beef tenderloin. What. It's supposed to wrap the entire steak, not just a miserable layer on the top. 3) Missing layer of prosciutto. Even if you want the meal to be halal, you could have added a layer of maybe chicken bacon / beef bacon. 4) When I asked for medium rare meat doneness, the waitress told me they highly recommend medium because the puff pastry wouldn't be baked well otherwise. Wellp - I ordered medium like you asked and your puff pastry *STILL* wasn't baked. So. Do you want me to order well done? Also, maybe your friggin meat would be properly medium rare if your stupid duxelles layer wasn't a paper thin layer on the top only (nothing on the sides and bottom) and you weren't missing a whole other meat layer. 5) Potatoes were good. 6) Other vegetables well blanched. 7) RM78 (most expensive thing on the menu) for a Christmas disappointment. Fun. Highly recommend anyone else to take your money and have some good Malay / Chinese food elsewhere. Hurts less when bad food is cheap, instead of bad food for an arm.

My wife is British and we have been living in Malaysia for 4 years. She get like she was home when we enjoyed our dinner at Ye Olde Smokehouse. I had the French Onion soup which was the best I’ve ever had. My wife had the Beef Wellington which was fantastic and I had the roasted chicken with stuffing and cranberry sauce, also delicious! We shared the apple crumble which is very uniquely presented. Not silly prices considering the location and quality of food. We will be back next time we visit CH.

We had a light lunch, cocktails, and dinner here. Lunch in the beautiful large English garden was delightful. The intimate rooms in the pub were perfect for two couples and Joe built us a nice fire to ease the evening chill. A nice Spanish Tempranillo went well with the Beef Wellington for dinner. The Lamb Shank and Roast Beef I’m told we’re equally delicious. The Mulligatawny soup was exquisite. The authentic English Pub decorating did make us feel we’d stepped a local pub in Cornwall.

Brought a group of 7, they handled our reservation for the family well and was always on hand to attend to our various needs over the course of dinner, which we all enjoyed, the steaks perfectly done, even the veggies cooked to perfection. I don't quite understand the criticisms of many of the restaurant. Perhaps they're not accustomed to colonial British style of cooking and presentation. There is a history to this, since Cameron Highlands was a significant administrative and military outpost in yesteryears and Smokehouse has kept itself esteeped in some of those traditions. It's English food peeps, I don't go elsewhere and ask for fried rendang. I will definitely be back!

Terrible and Arrogant service. We were group of 12 plus people and couple of people did not wish to eat but the staff refused to serve for all !! The waiter was too arrogant to take the order and he was literally asking the guys who were not eating to leave. The staff needs to be trained to be polite. Also the menu should cater for Vegan as well as Vegetarian requirements.

I came here with my partner and it was definitely a pleasant dinner. I ordered beef wellington, my partner had roast beef and we had a bottle of wine. The roast beef was really good, tender, flavourful and plenty. The accompanying roasted potato and Yorkshire pudding was really good. However, the beef wellington was average. The beef although tender was not done according to my preference which was medium. That’s still fine, but it was also underseasoned and just didnt vow me.The mustard served on the side helped to elevate the flavour tho. The accompanying roasted potato was good , and the bread roll and butter was warm and just yum! Service was top notch, ambience was lovely, so are the people working there. I just wished they allowed seating at the garden given there was no crowd. All in all, my partner and I enjoyed our dinner, I just wished I ordered something else, like their pie maybe. It smelt fantastic.

Brought the family for a spot of tea. Lovely tea. Delicious scones and fruit crumble pie. Just a suggestion: maybe you could serve butter with scones for those without a sweet tooth? Otherwise a satisfactory meal

Was looking for good scones in Cameron and found this restaurant on the list. Called them up in the morning itself to get a reservation for afternoon tea but was told that they do not take reservation for afternoon tea and can just walk in (in a rude way). When we reached there around 3pm, we were told to leave as they do not serve afternoon tea today to cater for Christmas Eve dinner later tonight. I mean you could always inform us beforehand on the phone call in the morning so we don’t have to drop by and can plan for other alternatives. We ended up having it at Jim Thompson tea room and it was so much more pleasant experience than this. Scones were good too. I don’t think I’ll ever come to this restaurant anymore.

As the title suggests , having a full English breakfast at RM 58 was barely anything great. It has basic full English breakfast..but erm that's about it. If you're into photographs, then I guess this is the right place. Loved the flowers and decor which has British touches, totally recommend this place for a nice photo shoot.

Stayed at the Smokehouse on 24 May 2022 1. The lobby interior ambiance, historical building value together with the lovely scenic garden is unique and worth visiting to admire the flora. 2. However, the room area is rather small for comfort, dimly lighted and cluttered with overaged furniture. Even the faded pictures in wooded frames look past their age a long time ago. One finds it hard to justify having to fork out and pay RM400-RM700 per night. As a result of my one night stay I unexpectedly experienced bed bug bites like on both of my feet. Suffer intense itch with red marks on both my leg skin now. 3. Food served during dinner was best to describe them as mediocre. Even the expensive steak doneness was over cooked and rubbery. Considering its a fine candle light dining and certainly with steep pricing for all menu items. Cost us a total RM277 for a mushroom soup, ribeye steak, grilled salmon and fish & chips for 2 couples. Unsatisfying dinner and overall results. 4. Breakfast was good despite of the waiter not getting our egg orders correctly. 5. Staff both at the reception were polite and helpful. Would not recommend the hotel to my frens.

Came for afternoon tea at around 2:45pm and we were told we weren’t allowed to order any speciality coffees. This was fine as we had no intention of this, but this was before a “hello” or “welcome”. We ordered the Devonshire Scone set for 35 ringgit, which excludes 10% service charge and 6% tax. Scones were absolutely delicious, the best we ate in Cameron Highlands, and the cream and jam were beautiful. We were told we were not allowed two cups for the teapot, and we would have to buy another tea or coffee to obtain a second mug. Ridiculous! All that ended up happening was we stuck to the one cup and just shared it. Wi-Fi is free and works great. All in all, an expensive afternoon for small portions, with some odd rules and service in between, but the scones make up for it I guess.
